What does it take to own and ride them in Santa Monica? Insurance? D.O.T. license / fees?
wouldn't be a bad night job for all the tourists...

They've tried to start em in LA before, but the taxi board won't release a medallion for a pedicab, it's not illegal, they (i mean the bureaucrats) just don't think it could work or something and won't release a medallion (yes a pedicab needs a medallion just like a regular car taxi)

Thanks for the update. At Ko Raku last night after the Chinatown Mosey, Brian said he can't wait to come visit you so you can pull him and his bike around. Ha!
You are going to be sooo strong in no time. Fat people just make you stronger = no fail.
Hope you rake it in tomorrow night!

Hey kalie it's lane. Sweet you're enjoyin yur job. Do u ever pedicab beyond SW Portland? I don't ever recall seeing any elsewhere... I might have seen one in SE near Burnside. Does anyone pedicab across the burnside bridge? Up Mt Tabor?

I did a lot of research in to starting a pedicab business last summer.
The City of Santa Monica has an outright ban on the trade. Most other cities have no regulations, but are hostile to the idea. L.A. has policies that technically allow pedicabs, but the LADOT refuses to issue permits.
Kalie, as a female pedicab operator, will typically earn better money than her male counterparts.
To buy a good pedicab (Cylcus Maximus or Broadwy pedicab) you'll need about $5000.
Insurance will cost $2,000 (for one operator), upfront, for the year.
Licensing, etc. will cost a few hundred, as will business licenses and rent (to store the thing), and other expenses.
If you ride a quality pedicab, and want to fund it yourself, you're looking at $7,000+ startup costs.
Working 8 to 10 hours days, you'll have to average about $12 - $25/hour (depending on how many days you want to work) to make a "profit" to pay for yourself to eat and have a place to sleep.
No healthcare, etc. unless you pay for it. No sick days. Any injuries or illness and you're on your ass until you get better.
It could work, but it would take a couple of things to fall into place and a chunk of money to buy multuple cabs, rent a space to repair and store them, and proximity to several profitable markets to keep operators on a regular work schedule to pay themselves a living wage.
