food right? really?

i was looking at the ride calendar for the food fight ride, and idk, it seems kind of uhhh, not right.
when people are starving/without homes/just not doing well in general, how can we go do a bike ride where we waste food. and considering how big these rides get now, it's gonna be a shit ton of food.
with the events thats been going on (economic turmoil, the fires, food shortages overseas), is this really a good idea?
i'm not really one to preach, im just as much of a dirtbag as the next guy, but when there's bike rides in downtown where riders give the homeless free burritos, a ride based on a food fight just sounds wrong. keep in mind that thanksgivings right around the corner and people are starving.
also keep in mind, food fights are messy as fuck. we're gonna be wrecking our own streets. after this, you have no right for the cops to be on ur ass on bike rides.
does anybody else agree or am i gonna get shit talked on?

(sorry I had to... that typo was driving me nuts.)
but in all serious, yeah seriously dumbass idea. wasting food on TG isn't exactly good form.

and speaking of all this,
ive noticed that one of our rider's had her mother pass away.
i saw that there is a benefit car wash coming up.
with the carwash, what if we put a ride together, something huge, and make it into an impromptu charity ride.
with how big these rides are getting and having everyone put in a few dollars, you can put together a pretty hefty sum.
i'm sure everyone can hold off on that extra tallcan and donate a few bucks for the family.
i havent been to the crank mob rides for awhile but ive heard that its gotten fucking huge.
and if you let it be known that this is to help out a family who has lost their mother right before thanksgiving, people will donate.

I'm a finicky eater, but I wouldn't endorse throwing onions and cilantro around; it's just wrong. Actually, a better way to describe it would be indecent.
It's an indecent act.
And yeah, I lol'ed at CDNs post.

no ones gonna put a few dollars into a hat if it means they cant buy an extra tall can at the next 7-11. it sucks, but thats the mentality.

@ rbi
do you really think so?
i mean, i love the fuck out of my tall cans but if someone told me what the money was going for, i mean, how could you not?
these rides were supposed to bring in a sense of community for cyclists through out los angeles.
if we really can't spare two fucking dollars so a kid can have her mothers funeral done right, then i dont know, maybe it's proof that all these people are phonies and they dont have hearts.
let's fucking do something right for once. or at least make a strong effort to.

oh, and i know it may surprise you, but rbi speaks the truth. Despite the good cause, there are a lot of broke/unemployed and unfortunately some just plain selfish ridaz who complain about buying spoke cards... So don't be too suprised if people won't spare a buck or two. You should still try though. You'll still make money, just maybe not as much as you expected.

Seems like a certain group has run out of ideas. Personally I would rather see them go back to jump roping and writing in the streets with chalk.

I could understand not wasting food and all, but the last thing I want to see is these rides becoming reminiscent of the local, bike club where I live.
A cool guy used to lead it a few, years back.
Could care less if you were kitted out, or even had a road bike.
The guy who has wrestled control of it now is this English teacher I had in high school.
He only likes to speed, wear nice jerseys, and bitched when I showed up on my mtb.
After he found out who I was, and I found out who he was, we nearly duked it out right there!!!
Needless to say, after that incident, only five people ride with that group now, while everyone else does like me, and travels down here for rides.
You know, maybe in the not-too-distant future, I should plan a Paintball-Ride.
We all ride down to various, clearings and try to bunker each other!!!

@rbi
when i first started riding, i was pretty young.
i was just as dumb and irresponsible as the kids we have on the rides now.
but i think the difference now is that we dont have people that keep things in line anymore
i remember the first time i got chewed out was either by dan B or sexy dave like 3 years ago. after that and having paul from atomic shake his fist at me, i straightened the fuck out. no more throwing bottles at cars, no more punching car windows, and no more destroying liquor store parking lots.
i guess what im trying to say is that we need to give these little kids reality checks here and there.

and yes, i was a dumbass for causing all that ruckus, but others were to talk shit and make sure i didnt do it again.
we're always gonna have dumbasses (like myself circa 2004) but we dont have people to keep things in order anymore.

I've tried to tell people not to do those things on rides now, but sometimes, little kids want to act hard and start a scene.
Bottle-breaking, light-smashing, harassing motorists that aren't even being a threat to begin with.
And don't get me started with the stealing I try to call out.
I usually get this "What the fuck you going to do about it?" look.
At that point, I wonder if I should let things take their own course, or intervene and dropkick his little ass?!?!?

Isn't there already a thread detailing everything you guys just outlined in here? jesus fucking christ. How many more times must it be said that wasting food is not couture? As if your mom beating that into your head wasn't enough.
And don't think in any way I'm on either side... I could give a fuck less. You wanna waste food? Do it... as long as it ain't mine. I for one won't... but if I so choose to do so, which to think about it I probably waste a lot of food just like the rest of you on a day to day basis, then I will and won't give a shit about you or your ideologies.

i may be going to versailles for someone's birthday that day. perhaps i'll bring my supersoaker and water balloons, stop by seafood city on the way to the westside to pick up gallons of fishsauce and shrimp paste and do a driveby.
or maybe i'll just go home cause i'm a silly old man.

the homeless people will just eat the leftover food off the ground
then no food is wasted, and the mess cleans itself up

Yeah, wasting food is in very bad taste, if you ask me. How about this: grab those old cans of beans out of the back of your cupboard and bring them to the Midnight Mission before The Ride with No Name.
