Fixie Hubs
Thread started by stillline at 03.26.09 - 6:19 pm

Every fixie hub I ever owned has stripped off the lockring after a few thousand miles and I have to switch it over to the other side. This happened again just this morning on my tallbike.

Right in the middle of an intersection the hub just turned into a freewheel with the cog spinning forward on the hub.

What is the best way to increase the longevity of fixed wheel hubs?

I just bought a Dura-Ace lock-ring instead of the no-name one i was using?

The lockring was pretty tight.

After it stripped off though it was pretty loose. The lock r-ing threads on the hub were all torn up. So were the threads on the lock ring.

This was the first time it ever slipped.

The hubs are the black wide flange hubs that come with Vuelta wheels.

I switched the cog over to the other side of the hub and bought a new dura-ace lockring.

I am assuming these are just cheap hubs and thats why the threads break after time.

Anyone have experience with this?

i cant find any info on the hubs that come with the vuelta rims, but they are probably the velocity hubs. sealed bearings, 32 or 34 holes. they are great hubs because they are bombproof. i dont think that has anything to do with the threads stripping.
maybe its just getting loose over time and youre not noticing it until its too late? since you just switched it over to the other side, check it again in a month and see if its loose. or take it to o20 and see what they say.

The threading on formula hubs are as shitty as anything else on the market. Palms cycle uses blue loc-tite and did it on mine when it got stripped. That's good, but I'm sure JB weld would have worked just as well or better. It's good on anything that you can't use shoe goo for.

Or just stop skidding.

Thats the thing.... this wheel has only ever been on my tallbike.

Which I only very rarely skid cause I enjoy not being dead.

The lockring was tight. I put the cog and lock ring on with a chain whip and a good lock ring tool. Real tight.

Someone told me to use teflon tape on the hub threads. Will that help?

did palms cycle really put loc-tite on your hub? i wouldnt ever give them business ever again.
you should never put loc-tite or jb weld or any of that crap on a proper track hub. EVER.

ruinedbyidiots
03.26.09 - 8:14 pm

reply

You do know what loc-tite is made for right? Sure if you have a bottomless bank acc, get nothing but the best and replace it when the paint fades, but loc-tite can make it work better. Also why wouldn't someone put loc-tite on brand spanking kick ass new stuff? JB weld is a different story.

If you have any info on bike mechanic gurus that don't like loc-tite, I would be curious to hear about it.

User1
03.26.09 - 8:41 pm

loc-tite and jb weld are great for suicide hubs. but those are pretty stupid too.
if you are using a proper track hub, loc-tite is not required. the lockring should be reverse threaded on smaller threads than the cog. once tightened together properly, the two should not come loose. you should grease the threads and be very careful threading the cog and lockring on the first time. its very easy to crossthread hubs.

ruinedbyidiots
03.26.09 - 8:48 pm

reply

Lock tight or JB weld on a hub is retarded. That's not the correct way at all.

You need a high quality lock ring, like the Dura-Ace one you just got. The cheepie lock rings that come with budget wheels are stamped out of metal, where Dura-Ace, Euro-asia are machined. The result is much tighter thread tolerance.

Grease everything. When you install anything threaded there is a gap (.0005" ish) The grease fills in this gap and makes the parts fit tighter.

That being said, Kel had one of those Veltula cheap rear wheels with the cheap lock rings and striped the threads in less than a month. I rebuilt the wheel with the same brand hub, installed a quality lock ring and it;s been good for over a year.

yuupp extra durable.
skidng down hills on rainy days will never be better.

i had to go to the bike shop evry once in a while to buy a new one and i guess the guy got tired of seeing me and having me waste my money, so he made this for me he said.

as soon as i got it he told me to ride and to try to break it.

and if it broke he said he would give me a new one for free.

i tried breaking it.
couldnt at all.

this setup was an awesome invention!!!!

i bougt it with a white super deep v rim for 150.
its worth it.

it isnt a maker.
the maker was the guy at the bike shop.

so in order to get this.
youd have to come get this.

its the only way.

unless their is some maker that makes these hubs.
you would have to do some research on that one.

if you want to come down.
shoot me your email address or number i can go to the bike shop and have him make a new hub and i can tell u when it'll b ready and u can come down to get it.

it will b worth the drive..
id say so.

When people say "suicide hub" they mean a hub that has a cog screwed onto a freewheel with no lockring. This is obviously dangerous, because if you apply some backpressure, you can spin the cog right off the freewheel and you will no longer have a way to slow down your bike.

a suicide hub is a freewheel hub thats turned into a track hub with jb weld. its janky and unsafe.

a deep v is the #1 choice of rims for hipsters. they are made by a company in australia called velocity.

Just want to mention my Dura Ace NJS hubs are the shit, not to mention rust proof. You can repack the bearings, they have good threads, and I have changed the cogs many times and not stripped them. Hubs are the most important thing on a bike. I always put my cog on using a vice, then the Shimano tool to put on the Dura-Ace lockring, then go ride it around real hard and skid and backwards circle for a few minutes, then re-tighten it all. Never stripped shit. OH and Morey at Bike Factory is the man on Track stuff.

there is another company doing bolt-on cogs, similar to the homemade one above and Level.

Also, does anyone think that the hub on a tallbike is under more stress than a regular hub? Maybe because the chain is pulling both up and forward on the cog at the same time rather than just forward?

the only way a tallbike setup could thrash a hub is if your chainline is off. a few mm is ok, but anything over 5 or 6mm would be bad.
