Bad Idea: The Frank Lloyd Wride
Thread started by Agent Orange at 11.27.07 - 12:22 pm

It's a looong way off: June 8, 2008. Plenty of time to come up with sane reasons why you shouldn't, or to go crazy enough to join Agent Orange in this quintessential Bad Idea Ride that will visit the 10 SoCal homes and buildings of architect Frank Lloyd Wright from Duarte to Malibu.

AWESOME! is this Will? I am glad this isnt falling through.
I am extremely glad to help! I am an (non-registered) architect and am absolutely down to ride and help with this! I may know you if not Will, I have a FLLW tattoo on my right forearm...

This is a daytime event right? we had previously talked of making it a 2-day ride, being as you'd want to tour the spots. ANYHOO~email me! marcusgetsemail@gmail.com

Woah, I just read you did want to go in one day. First, its going to a hill-climbing ride of at least 80miles...I recommend at least 2 days: these are masterpieces after all. I think people will not be just riding to spend a couple minutes to rest and then out!

Its your ride, you posted it, just my suggestion!

Skidmarcus: Yeah this is Will and I remember us talking about doing this after the Hot Knives Beer Ride. I totally appreciate your enthusiasm and input. Sure, a one-day ride of over 80 miles with all that climbing won't do FLW's works much justice and is totally a Bad Idea: hence the name.

But don't stress. At this early stage it's still a work in progress. I'm not sure if I'd consider making it a two-day experience, but once I chart out the route and get a better idea of all it will entail I'll decide whether or not to cut Malibu from the equation. That's certainly a long and tall way to go out PCH and up Kanan Dume Road for one of FLW's least known homes. Plus there's that whole "return trip" to consider.

Kathryn: I'd guesstimate the full ride will take somewhere in the neighborhood of 10 hours. Should I decide to delete the last stop in Malibu I'd put the time at around 7 hours.

Why not break it down into segments?
Like, week one, y'all explore FLW's 1-4.
Week two ride, y'all explore FLW's 5-8.
Just an off-hand suggestion if it hasn't been mentioned already.

Me thinks John Lautner schooled FLW after Wright took him under his wing. But that's another chapter of this saga.

This is the most awesomest idea in the century.

All other rides this century pale in comparison.

I would vote for no sag wagon... I'm guessing it's mostly downhill to the PCH from the last stop... Then we can pickup the bus, two bikes at a time, there shouldn't be more than10 ridazz left at that time...

Also, there is a SMMC/NPS funded shuttle that runs during the summer time taking bikers back towards the valley from the area.

My favorite parts of the Bad Idea Ride franchise is that since it is almost impossible to get killed in LA, it forces us bicycles to be more independent, and to gain a real concept of the region without hiring private vehicles to dab our diapers.

o-one will die on this ride.

If we tried the same in sub-saharan Africa, maybe some people would die.

Sorry I've been lax in keeping up on the comments on this ride. To answer a couple questions:

1) Why wait six months? Longa daylight hours inda summa, and June 8 is FLW's birthday.

2) Why not break it up into parts? Because that would be smart and make it not a BAD IDEA ride.

3) Something about Lautner pwning Wright. Maybe.

4) Something about FLW's fly style but him being a freak and not knowing anything about construction. Borfo! YOU the freak!

The last commenter brings up fine points about self-reliantly eschewing vehicular assistance at ride's end, but I'm still considering A) axing the Malibu house from the route or B)some sort of paddy wagon to bring those of us normally self-reliant but wickedly tired finishers back to civilization.

Well, it's definitely a bad idea. I would like to avoid the PCH, if possible. Since it's a daytime ride, maybe we'll have enough riders to create a larger more visible pack...

I vote for no other vehiculares other than bikes.

I'm definitely doing the AIDS ride, but I'd be more than happy to participate in some scouting rides between then and now. In order to keep the original bad idea ride a once-in-a-long time event, how about a scouting weekend sometime between then and now in which we do the full route over 2 days, as was suggested early on in the thread.

I am so glad this ride is a long time away so I'll have time to get ready for it, but I'd love to see this become a "good Idea ride" too where we get to spend some time at the sites. Also, it's been a while since I was on PCH but is it really bad to ride on? Isn't that were a lot of spandex guys ride? Just wondering what's bad about it.

As some of you know I am an architect and FLLW enthusiast and would love to host this ride. Would Agent Orange be interested in letting me take the reigns? I would love to do so, and well, I might just ride it by myself anyway!

First of a Two-Part Frank Lloyd Wright Architectural Tour Series.

This hearty Sunday ride is a unique bicycle tour of the architectural works of renowned architect Frank Lloyd Wright in the Los Angeles Area. The tour is designed to provide a foundation for understanding and appreciating the revolutionary work of the architect, and also the legacy which he left behind.

Offering this study in two parts allows a more comprehensive study of the work. The first ride will be a study of the seven LA houses in the area, and one retail space. We will not be able to (legally) enter many of the buildings, unfortunately. There may or may not be a brief presentation or introduction of the building.

The route's length in its entirety spans 45 miles over approximately 10 hours. This includes a lunch break at Mile 14 at 2pm. The route as planned will allow riders to leave (or enter) at Mile 14 or Mile 22, so that no one feels forced to complete the ride if they are not so inclined. The pace will NOT be swift, and certainly no one will be left behind.

This Ride (Part One) begins at
The Lake Station - Gold Line

340 N. Lake Ave.
Pasadena, CA 91101

Departs promptly at 9:30am.
Sunday June 1st, 2008

Please bring enough $$ for a snack, a lunch, and The Tour Of Hollyhock Residence (Adults are $7)

Route List [and time of departure from this stop]

Lake Station - Gold Line [9:30a]
Millard House aka "La Miniatura" [10:20a]
(short break somewhere along the way)
Barnsdall Residence aka "Hollyhock" [1:45pm]
Lunch Break [depart at 2:45p]
Ennis-Brown House [3:15p]
Freeman House [4:00p]
Storer House [5:00p]
Sturges House [6:00p]
Anderton Court House [7:00p]

Finish at Wilshire/Western Red Line Station at 7:30

View Larger Map^^^PLEASE CLICK ON "VIEW LARGER MAP TO SEE THE ROUTE!!!There are a couple surprises along the route, which offer a glimpse into Part Two! YEAH!

I am leading the ride, and am a trained (though not yet licensed) architect. The reason I drown myself in the profession (and burned my soul in school) was because of the continuously profound experience of viewing Frank Lloyd Wright spaces. His work inspires me to restlessness, as it has clearly done to countless others. Hopefully seeing this particular body of work on bicycle will offer a fresh perspective, and perhaps evoke a sense of the landscape from which Wright drew inspiration, and perhaps what this means today.

Hope to see you there!

Please check out Part Two as more details come in!

The website says $7 for adults but I remember getting in for $3. I can be pretty immature, maybe the ticket dealer sensed that. Meh.

Also, if anyone is concerned about not making the entire route;
The route is designed so that you may break off at certain points without commiting to any unwanted mileage. The route in its entirety may be more mileage than your used to, but you might actually surprise yourself when you ride 40+ miles! I know I did.

YEAH!
glad everyone could make it, the full day riding and exploring in perfect weather made for an ideal day. My personal fav highlight was crawling around The Millard House property. I think we got really lucky doing that....

SO
For Part Two, I was planning to make it a Wright-influenced theme: Lautner, Schindler, Neutra, Lloyd Wright, etc. We might also continue to the Sturges House, which we cut out of yesterday's route. If anyone would like to help plan it, please email me as soon as you can! Its a little bit of work planning these, and it would be much better to work with others! MARCUSGETSEMAIL@GMAIL.COM

It's some consolation to hear I'm not the only one with aching legs. I shoudn''t have been smoking all those years too because my lung capacity just ain't there. Maybe next time I should ride with an oxygen bottle.

But it was worth it.

How about doing the Eames House and the Sturgis on the next ride?

Thanks for putting this ride together Marcus. I had a blast rolling through the neighborhoods. The houses on the stops were awesome to see where they were, but my fav was the one above that we went to that was an add on.

Next time I'll get some rest before doing those hills. Still loved the route and great getting schooled by all the architect nerds.

I am fearing that I may not be able to coordinate a good ride for this Sunday. Would anyone mind me postponing it, or would like to take over for this Sunday?

Ok, I am sorry to do this, but...

FLLWride IS POSTPONED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE!

mk4524 has expressed interests in planning this, but I am sure will love some help with it. To plan one correctly, it does take a bit of effort. Please respect that, and sorry if I caused any inconvenience to anyone! Kick me later!

With skidmarcus leaving town, let's see if we can still put together a part ii of this ride.

Contact me at mk4524 at yahoo dot com and let's see if we can set up a group off-line to organize the sequel to this ride.

Alan,

Since you've been on a couple of these rides, I was going to email you about this ride but don't have your email anymore. I know you've posted it here before but I was too lazy to go looking for it. Could you send it to me at my mk4524 at yahoo dot com?'
