since ive been on this forum, but yeah... so im moving back to southern california (from portland or) in october and im looking for a little advice as far as living in la.
I have a place to stay while im looking for a job, but im going to need a job. I am a bicycle mechanic by trade, working/running veloce bicycles in portland currently and used to work at mission hills bikes in san diego. anyone have any advice on shops to go to for a job?
after acquiring said job im going to need a place to live for myself and my lady friend. any suggestions on neighborhoods to live in would be more than welcome. I am also car free and not planning on getting a car anytime soon, so keeping that in mind i would really appreciate any advice i can get from anyone...

as far as job.........yeah, cant help you to much but there are plenty of centrally located neighborhoods that you can live quiet well in.I prefer Hollywood or the Fairfax/west Hollywood districts,but there is also silverlake/echo park area that are quiet enjoyable. If you prefer to be out of the city try the San Fernando Vally.Good luck!

Portland/San Diego's lost - L.A.'s gain.
As to where you want to live? I would ask yourself, why is it you want to live in L.A. from that answer it might best suite yourself as to where you should live. i.e. do you want to be close to the beach, do you want to be part of a a music scene/acting, do you have certain friends or family here, do you have a church, mosque or synagogue you are to be attending, or any other scene that you have came here for. From that/those answer you can find the right neighborhood fit for you and your gal. It is said that Echo Park/Silverlake/Hollywood/downtown is the cool place for ridaz but it is also a great place to have your bike or parts of it taken from you if not secured properly. If you like to take public transit, you might consider being close to the major transportation lines.
You might want to see if a bike house or some other place where you can transition into would work at first so you can have some time to figure out where the right neighborhood for you and yours is.
Valley is less expensive but you do lose quaintness that you have had in SD and Portland.
I don't know of any shops to suggest, but I always have great admiration for those who strike out on there own. I always thought somebody who rode along and had parts/tubes/tires for minor (or major) repairs for those broke down on the side of the road would be a great service and a way to make some money riding a bike. Just being out on bike route on the beach or at the park where there is heavily traveled bike route might get you lots of repairs.
If my suggestions are worthless or obtuse I apologize for having you read this.

Oh, I remember you. About three years ago, some Cretins and Ridazz rode down to SD together. You were the first one to the top of Torrey Pines, right?
Sorry I don't have any job leads for you, but if any bike shop owners are reading this, they can rest assured that you are not lazy.
As my esteemed colleague Sexy said, if you give us a general impression of what you and your lady friend want from a neighborhood, we can give you some pointers.

as far as where we want to live or reasons to move,were just moving to leave here and not go to san diego... so la was the chosen destination, she waxes people for a living and we figured that a city with less hairy women that portland would probably be a good choice for her career. and my brother lives in silverlake to boot! so yeah, it doesnt really matter where we live as long as it is not too expensive and fairly central.
