Fixed gear=unhappy girlfriend

I found this in an artical in the San Diego Union
"But for all of their hipster appeal, the bikes can be difficult to operate, if not outright dangerous. Because coasting isn't an option, stopping takes strength and concentration. A common mistake for novices who forget they're on a fixed-gear model is to stop pumping – and go flying over the handlebars as the pedals keep spinning, a Specialized representative says. For men, the bikes present another challenge: Because riders can't stand up in the saddle to coast, long rides can result in reduced blood flow to the reproductive organs, which studies suggest may lead to impotence"

specialized should putt better seats on their bikes then.

Invest in a good saddle. I've never had that problem even after multiple centuries on my fixed gear.

i bought a new saddle today. a ritchey vector plus rail. dumbest name ever. the guy at the store told me it was a concor knockoff, but this thing is way more uncomfortable than a concor. maybe i just need to get used to it.

this thing:

is the best saddle i've found. and pretty cheap to boot, it was supposedly designed by a urologist or something to be as anatomically correct and comfortable as possible.
I liked it enough to put it on my track bike when I bought it. The thing with numbness is, it can be the best saddle in the world for you (everyone has a personal favorite, everyone has a different ass), but if it's not adjusted right, you can end up numb.

A common mistake for novice reporters who forget that they are writing for a knowledgeable audience is to stop thinking--and be thrown violently into the air as they lose control of their subject matter. Another challenge: long hours sitting in an office chair speculating about what it must be like to ride a bicycle can interrupt blood flow to the brain, which studies suggest may lead to insipid journalism.

@pc
In that case, dropkick the sucker out of their chair, hold them upside down, and shake 'em free of change!!
That ought to reverse the poor, blood-supply going to skull.

I'm calling bullshit. There was
similar article in the LA times last year. That opened with a shocking statement from a doctor who says that all cyclists have or will have erectile disfunction. The rest of the article lightly rebuts that ridiculous statement.
People get long term health problems when they don't pay attention to pain, discomfort, and numbness in their body, and keep doing the same thing.
Make sure your seat suits you and pay attention to your body.
Don't use bikes as a substitute for regular lovin' . MR is beautiful but (s)he is not your lover. If you are single or celibate (or married and celibate) don't forget to set aside special time for you and the little guy.
Finally, an occasional taint massage can't hurt either, if you have somebody special that will massage it for you all the better. If not do it yourself. Think of it as a cross between one of the things you need to do regularly (like brushing your teeth) and what you might to after a long day (like rubbing your feet).

I took my cat to the vet the other day and when the vet went to stick the thermometer in his butt. I started to console him. She said not to worry and sure enough he didn't even flinch.
That's when it occurred to me:

So, dont be afraid to speak up. Has any guys felt that they could not get an erection after a bike ride???

Brian, I have had that problem.
But only once.
I was riding a century through death valley last october on a really really crappy saddle with way too much foam. Being that I was riding fixed, I couldn't get out of the saddle too much to try to take pressure off "the area."
After the ride, I seriously couldn't feel my junk for about 12-16 hours. It was pretty scary.
That's the importance of spending money on a good quality saddle.

Scary. I've been out all day on the bike but it was always on a freewheel bike, I've had numbness but feeling returns any time I stand up.
