Lawyers = WIN. Just got the property damage settlement papers in, $750 to replace my poor Nishiki, and that's before bodily injury and pain and suffering. So worth the effort.

if you do a little research and foot work yourself. It is possible to get a nice settlement without giving

that's true. there is a lot you can do on your own, but a good, honest lawyer does offer:
a. experience dealing with insurance companies
b. knowledge of case law
c. professional relationships with judges
that being said, there are plenty of lousy lawyers and scammers out there too, and you might very well be better equipped dealing with it yourself.
