Helmets don't do much to protect your head, so go ahed and wear whatever you want.
I think that non-functioning helmet-style hat you've pictured above looks cool. Rock it, homie. Make sure you have a curly mustache to match it.

I wore on of those when I was Junior Racer in the 70s.
They became outlawed in the early 80s by the USCF.
Hairnet helmets were designed to keep from getting skined up' and also served well to hold your brains in your head after a impact.
I saw someone die who was wearing one of these.
good luck

how fast are you planning on going?
if you're planning on actually racing...i wouldn't wear the hairnet...although, it'll help keep you all intact when the coroner comes around....
if you are planning on racing, get one of the modern designs...i'd say
if you're just going to go hipster...buy it!
I mean, you can crack your skull at any speed, but I'd opt for a modern one if i'm planning on going crashing above 25 mph...

too cool for a helmet? How cool will you be if you wind up drooling and struggling to put blocks into a kids toy? Helmets
are cool. Riding around without a helmet makes you look like a dumbass, not cool. Riding around in a helmet that won't actually do anything to protect your brain makes it clear to everyone who sees you that fashion is the only thing that matters to you. That's pretty much the epitome of not cool, if you ask me.

my friend mary rocked a russian one of those at crank mob. unfortunately she couldnt wear it the whole time because it was real and head headphones inside that make it hard to hear.

Those are only for evoking old-time racing, they don't offer much protection at all. Basically it's like being helmet-less.
I'm not going to tell you to wear a helmet but I wear one myself most of the time. Safety is the result of having a presence on the street, common sense, respect, and smartly designed streets. The helmet is just a precaution against the very tiny chance of having a head trauma.
If you look at 80s pro racing footage, they aren't wearing any helmets at all except for aerodynamics during time trials. Nobody wore helmets on the road before they got decent some time in the mid-90s. In the statistically safest cycling places in the world (Norther Europe and Japan) hardly anyone wears a helmet.

In 2007, in 90% of cycling related deaths in the USA, the cyclist was not wearing a helmet. Draw your own conclusions.
