LA to Vegas... Phuck it...

Hey guys,
I actually have some time off at the end of the year and am spending New Years in Vegas. Since I have some extra time off I decided to ride my bike there. One problem I have encountered is finding surface streets to take all the way there. I have figured my way a bit past Ontario, but I am still trying to find a way through the Cajon Pass. I am trying to find a route parallel to the 10/15 the whole way there.
Anyone have any input to advise me on what route is best to take?

Damn... That route sucks... There has to be a better way... I wonder if there is a thomas guide route?

The Cajon Pass from Cleghorn Rd on up to Oak Hill is legally rideable up/down the 15.
And, when I was driving the rig between Yermo and Baker, I rolled past a family on touring bicycles on the 15N.
Wish I could accompany you on this one, but I've been struck with a case of the "Miss everything cool and die angry" syndrome.
But, it's not entirely of my doing now.

Q Can I ride my bicycle on the freeway?
A.
Of the more than 4,000 miles of freeways in California, about 1,000 miles are open to bicyclists. These open sections are usually in rural areas where there is no alternate route. California Vehicle Code Section 21960 says Caltrans and local agencies may prohibit bicyclists from traveling on freeways under their jurisdiction and that they must erect signs stating the prohibition. There are no signs permitting bicyclists on freeways. When a bicyclist is legally traveling on a freeway, he/she may be directed off the freeway at the next off-ramp by a sign that says "Bicycles Must Exit." The freeway will be posted at the next on-ramp with a sign that says "Bicycles Prohibited."

Ride the 15 from Vegas to Riverside? Even I think that is a death wish... But it may be a plan. It will save me 20 miles...
Thanks for the help...

Hey Marino,
I belive the riverside they are talking about is on the east side of Nevada near the border of Utah.
Truthfully, anyone is welcome to roll. I figured it would be a good way to try and kill myself before the new year, and have a bad ass time when it ends!

@rogue rida
Yes, there definitely is a Riverside, NV.
'Cept this one is a lil', hole-in-da-wall, about 10-15 miles south of the 15 when getting near Utah from Nevada.
I passed the sign for it a bazillion times while running rigs this past year.

This route/idea is certifiably insane. Wow. I love it.
Has anyone bike up Angeles Crest Forest? Is it bikeable?

Lots of bikes on Angeles Crest. It's a great route to Mt Wilson. 30 miles uphill then 30 miles downhill return (more or less). Angeles Forest has less traffic than Angeles Crest, but I think that is going out of the way of Vegas.

When RRH and I were driving to Interbike we saw a hardcore tourer absolutely loaded with bags riding up one of the 1000 ft inclines, on the highway. All I can say is good luck, but as the others said I believe you can take the highway, there is a pretty large shoulder as I recall.

Moving here from Vegas, I have done the Vegas to LA / LA to Vegas trip many a times, but never seen anyone actually riding on the side of the highway. Maybe thats why I never thought it possible. On that stretch of road I would consider it suicide anyways. But, like the post says... Phuuuuuuck iiiiit!!! I am doin di shiiiiiii...
My plan is to do the trip in 3 days. LA to Victorville the first day, Victorville to Baker the second, and Baker to Vegas the third. I am hoping to still have enough energy to be able to party on New Years.
I only plan on carrying water, supplements/food, and tools/tubes. I am going to sleep in motels to save on wight camping gear would put on, and plan on washing my clothes each night. Now that I am thinking about it, I better bring some extra skivies & socks. But truthfully, dont you shit your pants on impact anyways? So whats the point of wearing clean underwear?
Other than that, I have some friends storing food & water for me in the middle of long stretches so I do not dehydrate or starve. Lets hope for the best!

Its going to be a total of 282 miles from my house (Mid City) to the Double Down (Kick ass bar) in Vegas. Each day will be roughly 100 miles. The Baker to Vegas stretch will only be 85 miles. Not to bad. Not to good either! But it should be a good time. Plus, you will be in Vegas for New Years a a little reward to yourself...

That would be schweet Bent! I am finding out more and more about the parallel roads that run along side the 15. There are few parts I actually need to ride the 15 on so I am feeling better and better about this route. There is a 5 mile stretch between Baker & Vegas I will have to ride, and a tiny portions throughout.

Double Down was awesome, Do we have anything like it in LA?
Interbike, NYC Goldsprints at the Doubledown LV

Don't think I ever posted those publicly, I was hiding my fun (and obvious photographic talent) in LV. It's why I missed the CMSF 15 year anniversary.

Man, your a bit late Eddy... I was going to ride this for the 2008 new years... I was forced to pull the plug on this ride...
I was scouting the route from LA to EL Cajone and counted twenty trucks & trailers on their side due to wind gusts. It would have been a suicide mission if I did and the wind would have set me back another day or so. I am not worried though... Vegas is not going anywhere... Once school is done, I will have plenty of time to plan this suicide mission again. Next time it will not be such a rushed route. I plan on going through Angeles Mtns and then through Death Valley... A few more months, and it is on again.
Thanks for the inquiry....
