This is it boys and girls! This is the final thread dedicated to the Is This Sea Dead? Ride.
There has been many questions and concerns about this ride. Let me address each and everyone regarding this.
Q - What bike should I bring?
A - Good question! Bring one that is in good condition and that you can do 50 miles on. This is going to have asphalt roads as well as dirt roads. It is up to you to look at the route and make a decision on weather to take a MTB or a road bike, or something in between. The roads are all listed in the link above.
Q - I'm confused! If we doing both rides, that will be 70 miles?
A - No, doing both rides will be 50 miles. If you're doing the 50 mile ride, you have to do both. Others will be leaving camp at 2pm to do a 10 mile ride and meeting up with us. So it will be a 20 mile there and back for Ride 2. We'll be meeting at the Mud Volcanoes of Niland. All the directions are on the ride link above.
Q - OK let's cut to the chase, is the sea dead?
A - I ain't telling!
Q - Are zombies allowed on this ride?
A - We're an equal opportunity destroyer. We don't discriminate!
Q - I heard there's another ride happening later on Sunday. Will we be back to do that ride?
A - If the ride you're thinking of is the Critical Mass ride in Bombay Beach, yes we will. We'll be meeting the second group at 3pm at mud volcanoes. We'll be riding back to camp after this. So we'll be in camp around 5pm. The CM ride is 7pm. We'll have to get a ride there unless anyone is up to ride there.
Q - Is there a chance of rain on this ride?
A - Yeah, so far it's a 10% chance of rain. Down from 20% yesterday. Scared yet?
Here's a good set of pics someone took of some of the area we'll be traveling through. Click here From photo 15 forward.
The rain gods must be smiling down on us. There's now ZERO chance of rain for Saturday and Sunday day. There's still a small chance for rain Friday and Sunday night. That should be enough to keep the whiners away.
At least Allan has made some effort to create an event! Don't give him shit. What have YOU done? Probably nothing but bitch about ?$5.
It's "true" that there is another ride around the same time heading to Bombay Beach. It's not "competing" with the other ride, it's an OPTION, and a good one.
I'm going to do the 10-20 mile ride with Al, then I'm driving over to Bombay Beach to do Critical Mass.
I'm down with the short ride and a drive to BB, too. The ride to Bombay was fun, but the ride home was pretty much a drag last year. Partying > Riding at the Salton Sea, if you ask me. I'm saving my energy for the important stuff.
"I'm going to do the 10-20 mile ride with Al, then I'm driving over to Bombay Beach to do Critical Mass."
Same here. Actually, I'm thinking about driving half way up, parking my car south of the checkpoint, just so I can ride through the checkpoint pissing on those fuckers for the shitty way they treated me last year.
"The ride to Bombay was fun, but the ride home was pretty much a drag last year."
Yeah, a Ramona burrito from the liquor store and not being able to see lights in the distance made the ride back a bitch. It's fucking dark out there between the checkpoint and Niland.
I thought I was imaging things on the ride back from Bombay Beach last year. I could have sworn I heard voices under the bridges we crossed. Could have been people out in the desert, I don't know.
