Fuckers came back last night and stole my fixie, too. Locked and behind a locked gate.
Surly steamroller. Completely stock except for shimano spd pedals and the pink bar tape that was installed by the previos owner.

Unless you really just don't have the room to bring it inside your house/apartment, bring your bike(s) inside!! This shit is getting outta hand and to have someone come back, hop a gated fence and cut a lock is just proof. I'd sleep with my bike in my own bed before I left it locked outside, anywhere.

Here's the really shocking thing. Almira tells me that the 3rd bike was gone when she got home at about 12:30 last night. I was at home the entire time, with the front door open and both dogs in the house and on the porch WHILE THEY WERE STEALING MY BIKE.
I doubt they hopped the fence. My guess is that they cut the lock from the far side and then lifted the bike over from the far side by reaching through the iron rails. There is no way someone climbed the fence and jumped into my yard without alerting me or causing my dogs to bark. They aren't guard dogs, but they still make noise when people are in their space, if only so they'll get some attention from them.

Generally, I only keep my bikes inside. I started leaving the fixie outside since it was cheap and I have limited inside storage. After it safely lived out front without even a lock for many months, I started to get complacent and would leave my other bikes leaned on it if I as going to be heading back out. Every once in a while, I'd forget my nicer bikes were out there. This just happened to be one of those times. To some extent, I was asking for it by leaving them out there. On the other hand, the fuckers responsible need to get a fucking job and earn their own damn bikes. I worked long and hard for mine.

Heres an idea... I think this guy might come back. Leave another bike outside and rig it with some kind of alarm (something cheap but concealed.) Just get a bike from a co-op.

I use to keep my bike locked on the front porch until one night not too long ago I had the miracle luck just before turning in to look out the front window in time to see two punks creeping up the front steps from the sidewalk, keeping to the darkest part of the stairs all stealth like.
I wasted no time throwing open the front door and yelling at them as they scurried away that next time the chickenshits came back I'll be very quiet and very armed and they won't have any chance to run.
They haven't yet returned, and I haven't given 'em any reason to as I don't lock up on the porch anymore.
If I hadn't happened to be looking out at that moment I'd be a third as enraged and heartbroken as ideasculptor must be feeling right now.

To be honest, having a few bicycles stolen pales in comparison to walking out to the garage in the morning to find a $15,000 motorcycle gone. I've been through that twice. Truthfully, there is absolutely nothing you can to prevent theft if they know you have it and they want it. The second time, my motorcycle was chained down in a locked garage and completely blocked in by other motorcycles and cars. They still managed to cut the chain, lift the motorcycle over the cars, and get away with it, all in broad daylight. I'm reasonably certain a local dealership was responsible for that one, since I'd been in with the bike for service less than a week prior. They had my address on file after that. The first motorcycle theft was a bunch of meth addicts who threw it in a pikcup while it was parked on the street. I got that one back when someone who saw my stolen bike report online gave me a call after they tried to sell it to him. Unfortunately, they totaled it before attempting to sell it, so it wound up being a total loss, anyway.
Claiming on my renter's policy is out of the question, too. Not only will they just turn it around and take their cash back by raising my premium, but they only cover one bicycle unless you explicitly declare each bike and pay an increased premium to cover each one base on its value. Since I don't have them expliclty listed, they'll simply agree to cover the value of the cheapest one and screw me on the rest. The cheapest one doesn't even equal my deductible. So I get to take it in the shorts.

EPIC THEFT that sucks majorly... Thats exactly why I keep all 6 of my bikes inside... My $4000 Klein Q Pro with full Ultegra + Rolf Vectors got jacked after leaning it up outside for a 5 minit errand unlocked so I feel some of your pain dude... if I see these bikes on the street I will tase the rider of it for you on his balls

Third times a charm...
You should set up a dummy bike where the previous ones were stolen, but have some sort of camera set up so you can catch those fuckers taking your bike. Or set up like bells on it and have a baseball bat ready..

Dude, screw cameras or some sort of alarm - turn your bike into a giant taser with a car battery? Ground it and make sure you disconnect before ever riding. And just ignore it when it burns your house to the ground. Just a small side effect.
