Sore Wrist

Not sure what happened.
Just after a 15 mile ride on sunday my wrist started hurting pretty bad after the ride with some minor swelling. After the ride home and the following days its felt like crap.
Never had this before. It seemed to come out of nowhere.
I've been riding the same set up for 6 months with no problems, so I don't think its my bike.
I haven't really ridden much since then, and its still hurtin'.
I've been chomping on ibuprofen, icing on occasio, heating in the morning before using it, trying to elevate it at night, wearing an ace bandage off an on and it hasn't changed much, Its improved a little.
It doesn't help that its my right hand and I had to paint the bathroom this week. It also doesn't help that i work on a laptop and spend way too much time on it.
Fuck ... I think this is what they call getting old.
I don't have insurance and don't really like seeing Dr.s for this type of thing.
Maybe I'll go to the acupuncturist if it doesn't feel better soon.

The doctor will tell you that it's your computer usage and to wear an ace bandage. If you tell him your pain is at a level 10, the (s)he will give you a prescription for high dose ibuprofen.
Trust me, I'm a Chynna.
Acupuncture sounds good.

I had something similar a while back, and I found that doing some weights really helped. If the only exercise you're getting with your arms is moving a mouse and holding the handlebars, some rows, pull ups, push ups, etc. might be effective.

make sure you hold your handlebar with your arm inline with your hand. If they aren't lined up then your weight from leaning forward can strain the wrist and harm it.

no, I dont have a diagram. I only know this from knowledge passed through weightlifters. When we benchpress we try to keep our hands lined up with our forearms so the bar does not torque the wrist. The same thing would happen on a bike if you do not keep your hands lined up with the forearms.
simply, be conscious of how your hands are holding the bar while riding.
i guess this can be demonstrated by doing push ups. try a few by having your hands flat against the floor and then feeling the difference in the wrists when you do some push ups with your hands curled into fists. You'll realize how much stress is put on the wrists when they are not lined up with the forearms.

it could be, but it seems narrower bars just hurt the palms of my hands, not the wrists

I had wrist issues twice involving a bicycle.
1) bike frame was too large for me. it caused my wrists to be at an awkward angle that i didnt notice for a very long time. changed the frame up & everything was good.
2) new bike /smaller frame. the stock drops again put my wrists at a funky angle which threw out my riding posture out of wack.
problem solved by new bars & a new saddle.
havent had an issue since.
also... those wrist strengthening exercises do work if you're consistently performing them.

I'm not positive that this is form the bike.
It did start hurting after a ride. But I've been riding the same set up for 6 months, and puting in a lot of miles with out issue.
Furthermore, I to the week off of riding and its still bothering me.
And ... its only in 1 wrist, I would think that since my hands are usually doing the same thing in the bike, if I was going to have a problem it would be with both wrists?
I am riding "flopped and chopped" pseudo=bullhorns.
they don't exactly have a lot of good natural hand positions.
But all of the above makes me wonder if this is bike related or not.

I had the same thing - sore left wrist last spring.
I also don't have insurance so I never got it diagnosed, but I suspect it was caused by cycling.
I ride 3 bikes so the set up of one of them could have been the cause, but since the soreness finally went away, I still ride the same bikes with the same set up with not further problems.
There was an artical in Bicycling magazine at that time about sore wrists. It said exactly what Gav typed up above. Keep your hand, wrist and arms in a straight line when you cycle. The artical also suggested several streatching excersises. The one I did was to hold the sore wrist's arm straight out, plam down, and gently pull the fingers back with the good hand. Hold that for 10 seconds.
This almost immediatly eased the pain, which was bothering me for several weeks.
I have always done push-ups, but during this wrist soreness, they only seemed to agravate the bum wrist.
All I did was ride a lillte less and do the wrist streatch a few times a day. A week later, I was feeling much better.
The bad news, Patrick, is that I am old, at least by ridazz standards, so I can't rule that out as cause!

get your wrist xrayed, it is possible that with all the shock, that the overall stress has caused a hairline fracture in your wrist. if you specifically feel pain with pressure, it is likely to be that, if you feel pain with movement, it could be a combination, and if you only feel the pain with drastic movement, more likely a muscle/soft-tissue thing.

I had the same problem, based on what you're saying. I kept rotating my wrist gently at work, and started riding a bike that put less pressure on my wrists. keep the blood flowing through gentle exercise and keep pressure and weight off it
i think it was a combination of typing and shock from riding. if you have grips or grip tape, that will cut down the shock that you are experiencing. it may also help to wear gloves if you arent already doing so.
also, if you do need to type, make sure you have an ergonomic setup, ie a silicone pad or rolled-up towel under your wrist, infront of the keyboard and mouse.
and stop jacking off so much.

my set keyboard set up is anything from ergonomic.
I use a friggin' laptop. But i have cut way back and I have been rally careful this week. Its now 8 days since this MF started bothering me. I'm gonna need to seek help soon if this thing doesn;t turn around quck.

I have been trying to stretch this thing and do what I can to be kind to it. Sadly ... I've only ridden about 10 miles this week, trying to give this thing a rest. Looks like I'll probably miss another Wolfpack this week.

turning a car key hurts
but i also noticed that I feel pain when I rotate my arm. (face my palms to the sky)
i am rotating the arm only, not the wrist but the pain is in the wrist area.

Go see a real orthopedic dr.
Valley orthopedic has some of the best Dr's in the world.
no lie, I had my ankle reconstructed there by dr. Ferkil
He fixed it 100 %

Get a plug in keyboard too. If you have to use your laptop, change up the typing position with external keyboard.
That will be $325.00. See the receptionist at the front if you need to setup payments.
