West Hollywood has some bike boxes but:
* Not nearly as wide or long
* Not painted blue but do have bike symbols
* Don't disallow right turn on red by cars AFAIK
* Don't have demarcation speed bumps
* Do cross all lanes, allowing bikes to move into the left-turn-only lane.
WeHo's take on the bicycle box apparently does nothing to reduce likelihood right hooks. Keeping cars from making right turns on red lights seems part of Portland's special bike boxes.
It'd be a huge culture shift for LA drivers to accept don't-cross-the-blue-paint-on-a-red-light, big blue bicycle boxes. Sure it will take political leadership to get them built.
But something with a similar effect on drivers has already succeeded in the SF Valley.
When the Orange Line opened in the SF Valley, it also came with new no-right-turn on red, must-wait-for-the-bus-you-can't-see traffic signals at the busway crossings.
Along Victory Boulevard, one of the main streets of the SF Valley, Westbound drivers could no longer make right turns on red lights. They got used to it -- oh and the traffic enforcement cameras may have helped.

Bike boxes bitches! What a genius idea.
OTH's words raises my hope for more of 'em. Right hooks are becoming a huge problem in this city and slapping down some paint will make the streets safer for *drivers* then bikers might finally get a little love from this and many other cities.

this is the lick....GREYHOUND BIKE BOXES ..greyhound stations sell bike boxes for 10 dollars. If they ask tell them you're going greyhound....
