Last night we did an Alternative Critical Mass of sorts called LAteCM or L8CM if you prefer.
The idea was to have a ride for all the people who show up late for the big mass.
as well as to provide an alternative for people who don't want to ride with LAPD.
I have to say ... it was really fun.
Not perfect, but fun.
Most people wanted to catch the other ride, which we were able to do eventually (in venice haha) ... but honestly, it was more fun riding with the small group.
There was a about 50 people who had hoped to catch critical mass, and it was pretty fun creating an outlet for them to ride together and support each-other, in stead of fracturing into little groups of smashers who end up dropping and leaving the slower cyclists most of the time.
We had a group that really wanted to smash hard to the westside to catch up, so those people rolled out ahead of us by a few minutes.
Then a the slower group took off and many of us stayed together all the way to the west-side.
I don't think this ride necessarily needs to be about always trying to catch up to the LACM... but it seemed like what the majority of people wanted to do, so thats what we did.
LAteCM is just another CM in a world of Thousands of Critical Masses.
Its Just a time and place to ride bikes.
This is your ride LA
That is, if you are among the chronically late.

I hope this ride will be elastic.
I have no sense of control over it so the ride will go where the ride will go.
Fortunately with a smaller group its a lot easier to discuss things, and people tend to group up and split off at will.
