the LAPD does this shit all the time, "silent running". It's totally illegal, but no one does shit about it.

This was 1 block from my house - I ride by her memorial pile of candles/pictures/flowers every day. I didn't know her or anything but I get emotional when I look at her picture and think about how scared she must have been. She was also very hot.
It was an accident but it didn't have to happen. Unfortunately it will happen again to another innocent. Maybe we can learn some lessons so it doesn't happen to us::
You can do things to passively protect yourself like getting a helmet, lights and high visibility clothing. You can also actively protect yourself by following the rules of the road and being hyper-aware of your riding situation. Pay attention to traffic and look ahead to identify threats like cars merging into you or driving erratically or speeding without lights or whatever. They will not see you; you have to see them and react fast.
If this means riding without earbuds or not taking that third bong-rip right before heading out the door, your life is worth it. Take a minute to think before you saddle up and battle traffic.
Above all be careful but don't be scared. Your street! Own it! Earn it!
