SFV Bike Org

I've been talking to a couple of people about starting a bike organization for the Valley, sort of like the Kitchen/Oven/Bikerowave but with a greater emphasis on outreach.
Just wanted to get this discussion started, so who's got ideas? Anyone willing to go in on this project? Email me: danya717 at yahoo dot com or Ayla: aylastern at gmail dot com.

Go for it and move in steadily.
I remember when we used to have this place called "Kids Repair" down in the Old-Town section of Victorville.
It was pretty cool and they had the right idea at heart, but lack of exposure, interest, and a shit location led to its demise in '02.
If anything, start in a dedicated garage, then move on up to a warehouse.
Or, another cool idea would be a vacant lot and a couple of disused, 53' foot trailers.

the only problem is the space. there are plenty of resources out here in the valley.

Consult with Paul @ Atomic Cycles.
Maybe he will have some advice. Or interest.

Be glad to help. The trick is making it a 5013c, that a non profit, then the free goodies start rolling in.
Space is an issue.
Perhaps an earn-a-bike program where they pay a small amount 20-40 dollars and learn to build up a bicycle. I saw this in Tucson AZ at some place called Bicas, it was pretty cool.
Perhaps working under an already existing non-profit would be good.
I have a mess of good used tires for starters....
I'll be happy to jump in if it goes beyond the talking stage.

I think that is an idea that is much overdue. I've always though having a bike outreach that is sure to have Bi-lingual personal could be ultra successful.
Living in the valley, I see a whole lot of poor riding to work on barely working bikes and you know its their only form of transportation.
If you get something going, I could help out some on the weekends.

i was just talking about this with my friend. It would be great if there was a workshop out here in the valley. Unfortunately I'm still a newbie when it comes to working on bikes but I'm willing to pay to learn so I can help out at the shop later down the road.

Thanks but I'm aware of those sites and I've already taken apart my bike using these sites but its different when your with someone that's had experience. Especially when problems pop up...someone with experience would be able to tell me where that scratching, clicking, clanking sound is coming from and how to fix it vs. trial and error. You pick up old tricks that those sites don't tell you.
Plus its also to help out with the workshop.

Yes pay. And why? Because things that are given for free tend to have no value i.e. our public education system. If a kid has to spend a little coin and then build up a bike, you've taught him to fish so to speak and he/she has the pride of building it themselves, thus they will value the bike and the expierence all the more. Just give shit away and you'll have every worthless self-entitled lowlife pounding on your door with their hand out.
I've done a lot of bike outreach and the freeloaders were thick as thieves.
If anyone wants to learn about fixing bikes, you can hit me up at my shop and I'll teach you the ropes in exchange for helping me out. I have tons of bikes that need to be stripped, and all kinds of messes that need to be dealt with. That's a fair exchange, take me up on it if you want. Show up in person.

Thanks everyone for the input.
Our idea was to start out as a mobile bike clinic- setting up a stall at farmer's markets and things like that. That way we'd be able to raise bike awareness in a segment of the population that's not necessarily familiar with the concept of riding for transportation. We'd also like to set up things like a bike bus for commuters, and generally engage more of the non-cycling community. What we need at this point are people who're willing to help make it happen- people willing to help out once we get these programs started, and people willing to help create the organization in the first place.

@ sarah
I have a repair stand and some tools. I think a mobile bike clinic is a great idea. once people know of the clinic's presence at swap meet/outdoor market people will bring by their bikes.
