 mags are what those awful plastic/resin 5 spoke rims on bmx bikes in the 80s were called. or what that front wheel in the picture above is.

Then that "mag" is most likely an Aerospoke. Those and the HED.3s are somewhat popular with the nice-bike fixie crowd. Ya usually only see them on the front though.

 i remember the "help ive bent my mag wheel, how do i true it?" articles in bmxplus that told you to put it in the freezer to straighten them out. i dont know if that actually worked.

 the main reason rear aerospoke and hed3 wheels arent used that often is that they are incredibly costly (like 500 - 900 for one wheel, whereas the fronts can be had relatively similar in cost to a good front wheel) and yes, they are heavier than the traditional spoked wheel. They also have a proprietary hub, which means you're stuck with what the designers though it should have, due to the design of the rim.

 hey fuzz -- the aerospokes are about $250 for a front, and $350 for a rear set up with track threading. $600 for a bitchin wheelset ain't too bad. But the Hed's do get expensive, those are like $600 per wheel.
