In the local news this morning they reported a cyclist riding on Glendale Blvd just below Sunset was struck and killed. He seemed to be riding a black track bike and they said he was about 50. A witness observed the car swerve and hit him then run off. Fucken coward, I hope you burn!
Condolences to the family.
Anybody with more info?

Wow. I had to call up Rollers and make sure it was not him. thank the universe it wasn't.... so this is a perfect opportunity to pressure city council to put out a reward. They put a reward out for the USC students killed by a hit and run. They should put one out for this incident as well.

This is horrible- my condolences to his family & friends.
That's just a few blocks from me, luckily I was safe & sound in bed last night at 1am. From the photo I can tell exactly where that is - just under Sunset, the road narrows there.
It will be a small comfort, but let's hope the perpetrator of this heinous act is brought to justice.

My heart goes out to the victim's family. Looks like another ghost bike is in order.
Seems strange that they don't release the person's name. They have his age. Must be that they're trying to contact next of kin.

LAPD Central Traffic - "motorist arrested at 3:30 am and charged with 191.5PC - Gross Vehicluar Manslaughter. Based on physical evidence at the scene and the statement of the passenger, the motorist was under the influence of alcohol."
Does KABC not have access to a telephone?
Cyclist was riding a Trek 4100. LAPD won't release identity until they notify relatives.
Detectives Matson and Padilla are handling the investigation and are available at 213-972-1825.

Aren't ghost bikes normally intended to make people aware that a cyclist died at a certain spot as a result of an aggressive driver?
barleye04.19.09 - 8:26 pm

wiki states that it can be for people injured too. While I can see if it turns a rida into a vegetable would make an argument for putting up a ghostbike, that distinction is not pointed out on the wiki page.

Damn, on the reals, people out in EP be driving crazy as fuck... About a month and a half or maybe two months ago, homegirl & I were pedaling down Sunset, right by the Echo and some lady hit her, flew off her bike and hit her head on the concrete. She was in the fucking bike lane, dude! WTF?

There is a small memorial set up on the side walk - just a few candles, but this is an obvious site for a ghost bike, especially since it is such a visible and highly traveled area. I hope this can happen.
BTW, the Los Angeles Times is reporting the age of the cyclist as 44.

Sanctuary City - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sanctuary_city
Special Order 40 - http://www.judicialwatch.org/lapd-special-order-40
Both are wholly irrelevant to this issue, as this is a criminal vehicular manslaughter case, and Mr. Hidalgo's citizenship (which has not been specified in any of the articles I've read), will not be a major factor in his prosecution.

going to start a ghost bike this afternoon. if you have interest in helping email me. you can do it through my profile. i probably won't be logging on here the rest of the day so that's the best way to reach me. I probably have most of the parts, but i do need, primer, white paint, a heavy duty chain & lock, and maybe someone that can do a good plaque

i just had an idea, i don't know if its been done before.
we could have a alter display this year at hollywood forever, dedicated to bike riders who have been killed or injured due to careless drivers. the event would be a really good way to raise awareness. there are sooo many people who attend this event.
