What is the cause of this?
is my seat just angled weird and cutting off circulation?
reply
darwin manufactured your bike.
ill let that sink in for a bit.

New saddle, and/or adjust seat angle & fore/aft position, and possibly your handlebar height.
You need to be seated comfortably on your "sit bones" and if you don't have the seat set up right, or have your handlebars too low, you'll be putting more pressure on the nerves and tissues of your perineum and that's no good.

your seat should be level. angling it down isnt going to do anything. darwin.

@greeezybear, this is a big problem. if you want to have kids, stop riding your setup now (whether your seat is too high, your seat is too soft or your bike is not the right length), and ask for some advice from your local bike shop or from one of the bike co-ops. otherwise, rbi is absolutely correct.

greezy,
remember on long rides, to shift both hand positions and seat positions...just moving 1/4" can change and ease the blood flow to your private parts...and shifting hand positions on your bars will change the amount of pressure on said parts...
keep moving around on your seat...probably every 10 minutes or so...and see how that works

Get a good saddle that contacts strongly on your sit bones but as minimally as possible elsewhere. The Alias saddle works really well at at that for me. And angle it down slightly. And toss in some intervals of standing riding, particularly whenever going up a hill. Even short couple minutes sessions out of the saddle gets the blood moving around again. On hills, I alternate between sitting and standing to avoid the numb.

not only if you want to have kids but if you want to have boners, get a new saddle.
my saddle was poorly set up for awhile and it ended up with me having trouble gettin my shit up.
after i readjusted the thing and gave it about 2 weeks, i started having normal 24 year old boners again.
im telling you man, thas some scary shit.

funny story
i had a friend awhile back who was about to get laid but couldnt get a hard bc he was too drunk.
he went to his apartment neighbor and got a few viagra tablets.
he ended up crushing them bc he thought they would work faster that way.
he gets back to teh room and the girl is gone.
the pills work.
work too well.
work into the next morning.
he had to go to lecture and he had his bookbag hanging infront of his crotch till 3pm when it finally started to go down.

Yeah, just fuck with seat height and seat position until it feels better. At least for the meantime until you can get a new saddle!

i think a lot of times all you need to do is mess with teh adjustments.
i dont think its common to need a brand new saddle
unless of course ur saddle is all worn thin
also
ive ditched teh jeans and cut off shorts and i only ride in padded lycra now.
and let me tell you
its feels pretty damn nice

get a saddle without too much padding. My bike came with a saddle that was too padded and it fucking hurt to ride. That + lyrca and chamois

regarding your arms/hands going numb...are you one a bar that has drops and other positions? or are you on a fixie with only one hand position?

Wait are you guys thinking you need to ditch your Dickies shorts cause you're going to lycra? Just wear the lycra underneath fo!

I also rock these padded lycras. I wear them under my jeans or shorts. They've made my long rides so much more comfertable..

i had drop bars and recently got some bullhorns.
@user1
when i wear any kinda shorts or jeans at all, i feel like its restricting movement, so i just wear the lycra.

I was afraida that...with bullhorns, you have about 2 or 3 positions, and unfortunately those are lateral... you really only have about 2 positions front and back
with the drops, you actually had a lot of positions that you can shift your weight and hands around...
I'd recommend that you shift your hands as much as possible and shift your weight forward and backward both on the seat and on the bars as much as you can... you know, change positions every 5 minutes or so...
if you're in the same position for a long time and you're really leaning forward you can be cutting off circulation
are your gloves really thick type? sometimes over thick can cause hotspots on your palms
just for your knowledge, on my fancy schmancy bike with drops I go barehanded and for 5 or 6 hour rides and I'm comfortable the whole time...but with my "urban" bike with drops I have to wear gloves, even though it's a steel bike and absorbs more of the road....if I don't wear gloves with my urban bike my palms get numb! I do notice that I do not go into as many different positions on my "urban" bike as I do with my fancy one
I think it's a little bit of everything in your case...probably a little adjustment can be made with your positioning...and utilizing more seating and hand positions as you ride
adrian05.11.09 - 5:49 pm
reply
oh yeah, in reference to jeans...
jeans are usually uncomfortable because of the giant cross sections of thick seams that meet up right at your crotch... which equates to a lot of friction and lumps that you don't want to put your crotch on
adrian05.11.09 - 5:51 pm
reply
yeah, keep shifting your weight around to find that sweet spot.
i recently went from using drops all the time to some risers and i was mad sore at first.
