I want an elegant bicycle

I want a fancy looking bike. It hit me at CICLAVIA that I want a classy nice looking bike. I'll be riding more in the future. I want a bike I could wear a business suit on.
As somebody said, a bike that looks like a bankers bike.
Yet I want it to be of good quality and have performance wheels and gearing.
I saw green with white trim Flying Piegon and really loved the way it looked.
Yet we all know what great performance bicycle FP's are. Sorry Ubrey02
I love you and if you have what I want of course it you who I will buy from, even if it is at an inflated price.
I seen the Linus Roadster but it wasn't that impressive.
I want a multi speed derailleur that shifts as smooth as an STI setup. I would think an internal hub would end up being problems. Haven't ridden an internal hub that I thought performed well.
What I'm looking for is either suggestions of Models of bikes.

I could put together and steel frame with/
beautiful fenders (they got to be practical, work well and look good)
nice looking chain guard.
A beautiful pannier set up.
I know what seat I would want, I know the handle bars and grips.
but take suggestions anyways. Could be something better

Have you considered a mixte frame? I think the Soma Buena Vista is beautiful, add some hammered fenders, build it any way you like...

I'm looking for the exact same thing. I want something classy I can roll up to court on.
I think an internal hub would be optimal, with a belt drive or at least a chain guard. There's less grease to get on your pants.
I have a bike with a 7 speed Nexus hub on it, it works well. If you had ones that didn't work well, they probably just weren't set up right.
I can tell you right now, though, a "beautiful pannier set up" is going to cost you $$$$$ unless you're good at sniffing out deals.

I ride to court on my Surly Long Haul Trucker--or the 70s Schwinn Suburban I keep in my office. Both are sweet bikes, totally utilitarian, and not glitzy skittles fixes that I have to worry about getting stolen while I'm in court (which you should think about if you plan on locking it up anywhere). Locking up nice bikes makes me nervous.
I dig the way these bikes are set up because they are relatively upright (saddle about even with or higher than bars) so when I ride in big-boy clothes (i.e., suit) I don't have to lean forward considerably and thereby uncomfortably stretching my jacket/shirt along the back and having my sleeves ride halfway up my forearms.
Flying Pig. has some very nice Pashleys and Batavus bikes perfect for city riding and carrying bags. Go check them out. Velorbis also makes some nice bikes, but like Rivendell, they'll cost you. Look at their websites for ideas.
With a little effort, though, you could totally put one together from parts for cheap. Check out this dude's super hot, undeniably classy "poor-teur":

As for Flying Pigeon... When was the last time you were there? When it first opened?
Josef has cheap chinese bikes as well as fancy european bikes. Show us the money.

Any old touring / road bike with room for fenders, plus half the parts in the Velo Orange catalog.
Remove the front derailleur and one of the front chainrings and throw on a chain guard, add some townie handlebars, some fenders, a rack, a thumb shifter or a bar end shifter, and you're pretty much set.
