Thanx to studiodrome for that picture.
Should we have a list of places with bad bike racks? So we know not to park our bikes there.

The racks in front of LACMA. I swear I think you can pull those out of the sidewalk! For such a hip museum that spends millions on expansion, you would think they could have the raddest bike racks in LA! No, they got three ultra boring U posts that are just about to fall over!

Just wait till the thieves discover pipe cutters! They'll be able to cut the pipe so clean, it'll be hard to spot a cut pipe.

to reiterate the comment left by studiodrome on the picture post, the thieves use well placed stickers to cover the cut so cyclists lock up to it unknowingly making it easy to steel even if it's u-locked!

Hard to tell from the pic, but I'd bet my lunch money they used a hacksaw. A pipe cutter would leave a nice clean straight line that makes it hard to tell it's been cut. Stickers over it or not.

they just did.....
pipe cutter is and old trick and there many many more that i would not repeat.
i think in the interest of curiosity and just plain gossiping we do ourselves a disservice by speaking too liberally about some of this stuff, as if our conversations exists in some form of cocoon.
yeah this is just a tired argument that others have risen but i guess its my turn to beat a dead horse

keeping this move a secret is lame. The best thing you can do is give people a heads up on this. If I'm ever in that area, I'll twist that post so no one would be able to scam anyone again.

"keeping this move a secret lame"?
yeah....uuhhh nevermind.
"the best thing you can do is give people a heads up"
yes exactly. like,
-"hey lock up your bike securely with at least two ulocks, and check the integrity of what you are locking up too as well".
see i just gave someone a "heads up" and didnt have to resort to telling everyone my secrets....and i get to still be lame.

I was referring to anyone that wanted to avoid showing what some of the tricks of the trade are above as being lame. It wasn't directed at you.

These perps must be having nightly, wet-dreams about different methods of jacking a bike.
I guess to be on the safe side, we'll have to initiate a "tug-test" on these types of hitching posts.
