Ridazz are Changazz

So, seems like the MR image has been steadily sinking in the eyes of Los Angelinos. And there's been lots of talk of what to do. But, nothing's actually happening. I don't think. Is it? Here's another forum to discuss stuff to do that can hopefully be done. My ideas probably aren't that great, and I'm not the kind of person to lead a ride (yet..) but, maybe they'll inspire more creativity and hopefully some action.
A Clean up the Streets Ride -- pick up trash, litter, recycle!!, clean up parks?...
More Feed the Hungry Rides
A ride to pass out literature on what riding is about, the philosophies behind it, pros/cons, benefits of bicycle commuting.
A follow the rules of the road ride? hah....
The Sober Ride.
Volunteer Ride -- go around, volunteer @ charitable orgs. maybe animal shelters?
In essence, create some rides that not only are fun, but promote a positive image and are at least somewhat productive.
It may help to build some clout for getting what we want in the city.
I don't know... it's just frustrating that we all want change, but not enough of us are doing anything.
Thanks to those that are doing something! Enlist our help! Please!

I think Ridazz are pretty cool. We just need a few key assassinations and our peaceful hippy culture will be perfect.

Also there's a buncha homeless shelters that need volunteers on Sunday morning. In addition there's lots of elementary schools that look for people to read to kids on weekend mornings! Not to mention that this would be a great platform to hand out info and promote safe riding and build a relationship between riders and motorists!
Lez due it!

I'm making it happen(tm) all by myself. You want to join me? Start by going to the google group I started. I'm currently working on building mobile garden bins (AgBins) that can be stored in parking spaces or aparment balconies. I'm also growing radishes, onions, shallots, garlic, nasturhums and arugula for consumption and seed. Want some seeds? Join the fucking google group!

how about instead of trying to do more positive things to change peoples views on the ridazz we start by stopping all the negative shit that we do on the rides.how about that for a change
mandingo05.18.09 - 3:56 pm

Seems like the only ride that was obtaining a negative image was CRANK MOB. Richtotheie has done ALOT to fix this ride from a falling drunken mess to a fully F.U.N.N.R. ride again and this months ride was a total success. Other than that in my mind MR has been going up up up. These ridazz trips are getting amazing and frequent, its fucking great! Salton Sea, Austin, San Diego, Portland, and possibly another to New York? Thats almost a trip a month, lets keep it up all through summer. Makes me want to go buy a 15 passenger van so we can do more trips with more people. Marcus, i applaud you.

Yeah, to us everything is fantastic. Life on a bicycle couldn't be better. BUT, it's those who aren't inside this little bubble of MR that aren't seeing the pretty colors. For those who want any kind of change in the city for cyclists, i.e. getting "paint on the street", changing outdated laws, gaining more rights, and preserving the ones we already have, there has to be something to show voters, politicians, drivers, other cyclists who hate us, that every ride isn't a drunken party -- and i'm not saying that they all are! i just get the feeling this is what a lot of the unenlightened are assuming. dig? unless of course, this is what the majority of MRs wants the public to see...

Unfortunately, animal does have a point... though, there will always be people that don't like these rides.... it sounds like C.R.A.N.K. MOB really cleaned itself up on this last ride.
Still, even so I got this letter from a resident in Venice about the ride....
"I live in Venice. I love bikes.
I have grown to hate the very very loud idiots that wake up my neighborhood. Especially after the ride is over - sceaming as you ride to your home at 1:30 am.
The idea is sound but the meanspirited, profanity laced screaming is causing major blowback."

+1 mandingo.
in my opinion, ridazz have always done and will continue to do positive things. riding a bike being one of them. volunteering at the co-opz being another. showing up to city council meetings being another. aids cycle being another. passing out burritos being another. helping change the tube of a wheelchair LA marathon rida, and the many many many countless things that i hear about and read about from ridazz when they are on their bike or not.
the street cred is there.
but it takes one drunk idiot unnecessarily corking an intersection, cussing out a car, stealing beer, or throwing their shit all over the place to kill that positive image in a second.

Shift your consideration to others outside of your rides for a little bit, and then others will consider you. This goes for everybody that wants to see some things different. Are you one of them or, are you content with the way things are?

interesting letter. i live in Venice. i live near two bars and the people leaving these bars are wayyyy loud - ridiculous! i have roughly a block and around the corner.
i also live near the beach - imagine what it is like during the summer. we choose where we live. we have to expect the loud. i am trying to think - it must happen every so often which is wayyyy less than drunk stumbling people coming out of bars - that happens every night.
if the worst we have in complaints is that we're loud while we ride by for five minutes - phew! c'est la vie!
who is going to tell people to be quiet on rides. now - cleaning up trash and not stealing and yada, yada - that i can stand behind. that i would help with.
the silent ride.. hmm..

also - there are so many ridazz that i have met who have joined C.R.A.N.K. MOB and looked on midnightridazz.com because of the loudness in the rides.
they leave their homes, come down to the street and ask what it's all about - the next month they're happily a part of the growing numbers of people not driving cars, but riding their bikes.

I'd love to be involved in the guerrilla gardening, but i just can't join another google group. I'm putting a tourniquet on the inflow of information via my email in-box. Personal emails, OK. I know you, I see you fairly often...let's just chat in person, or email me, sorry, but I've reached my google/internet-group limit for the time being.

Wise words, animal. There's a lot of "me first" in our society, but I like to think that a measure of maturity is the ability to see things from another person's perspective.
The main time that I think about the noise is when we are stopped, especially if it's late. I think that avoiding residential areas as stopping points is key. I know that if I wasn't out on a ride I'd probably be trying to sleep by midnight on weekends and earlier during the workweek. So spare a thought for someone who might be needing to sleep for whatever reason.
That said, I've been on many rides where folks came out to the street to see the parade and cheer us on.

Agreed - there's no way several hundred ridazz are gonna keep it quiet when they're riding. It's not what we're about, and honestly I don't think too many people object to that. It's part of the spectacle and it moves on.
But very few people want it outside their bedroom window for a hour at 2am.
