at the very least, you'll probably only have to buy a new hub. you can use your existing spokes and rim, but if i were you, i'd go out and buy a new wheel with a fixie hub. also, you can request a flip-flop hub for a little more money and get two gearings instead of one. plus, if your hub ever gets stripped, you'll have a spare.
that's my advice

those are single-speeds. fixed gear is a little different. i could regale you with the finer points, but you'd be better off taking your road bike to a shop that sells fixed gear wheels and having them explain it to you.

you should make an lafixed.com account and ask for help there

Save your pennies and take the time to do it right.
Things you will need to convert a road bike to a fixie:
1) Track rear wheel. (If your road bike is a 27" frame, you may want to get a 27" track wheel, as if you get a 700c rear wheel, you'll have mismatched wheels, unless you get a complete wheelset.) These are about $100 online. You'll also need a cog/lockring, which you can get for $15-35 if they aren't included.
2) Crank. Depending on your chainline, which really needs to be straight for a fixie, (and you can move the chainring inside the spider to adjust the chainline slightly and/or use washers/spacers) you may or may not need a new crank/bottom bracket. (Pake makes a decent crank for $60, and Shimano BBs are $15-30).
3) Chain - Depending on whether you get a 3/32 or 1/8 cog/crank, you may need a new chain. These are about $10.
Converting to a singlespeed is MUCH cheaper, so that may be a consideration if you're on a budget.
Go to one of the local bike coops (Bikerowave, Bike Kitchen, Bike Oven), they may not have all the necessary parts, but they've got the tools and people with the skills to help you do this efficiently.

if you are crazy enough you can make a suicide hub with the stuff you already have, you will need to buy a track hub and some locktight

a suicide hub and a track hub are two different things. one is a normal hub with a cog glued to it. the other is a hub for track bikes.

you can use the old school freewheel (not freehub) hubs to jb weld it.

They're called suicide hubs for a reason.
Singlespeed it, or buy a decent track wheel.

if you have a high end road bike, i'm willing to trade.
then i can go on doing respectable rides and you can go on doing skids and losing teeth.
and im serious right now.
im up for a trade if ur bike is worth it.
this whole fixed gear deal is a fad and will die out.
a good roadbike will always be a good roadbike.

I have turned a few bikes into fixed gears by taking off the tensioner and trimming down the chain. Then you just thread strong wire or something through the cassette so it doesnt move. better yet, if you have access to a welding machine, just welt the shit out of it and it wont move.
I havent gone on a long ride with these; mainly just to mess around.
try it... if you DARE.
