Mojave Plane Storage Yard
Thread started by User1 at 03.17.08 - 8:27 pm

Does anyone know if the Mojave Plane Bone Yard is open for touring around?

Seems like a tour of desert is in order. We can go see some great blooming desert wildflowers, ghost towns and this bone yard.

“Christ on the cross, the coyote in the desert--it’s the same thing, man. The coyote is beautiful. He moves through the desert delicately, aware of everything, looking around. He hears every sound, smells every smell, sees everything that moves. He’s always in a state of total paranoia, and total paranoia is total awareness.”

Mr. Alessio,

I'm not quite sure if you are selling this at the right angle.

And Burro Schimdt's Tunnel and Red Rock Cyn:

I have access to a cabin out past Red Rock. The cabin was going to be used as rehearsal space for Trail of Slime and we also want to pull some pranks out there.

There are some very creepy cabins out there and some interesting Space Junk along with my future home:

I spent decades of my childhood out exploring the area so would be happy to try to set something up out that way before it gets too hot, but probably not before mid-May.

That tunnel sounds neat.

Is it "safe"?

It's pretty safe, I wouldn't want to be in there during an earthquake but it seems pretty solid.

"I'm not quite sure if you are selling this at the right angle."

I've never been interested in attracting the "sweet spot" of a group like MR FBI. I'm far more interested in attracting the fringes of the group. Ones that are interested in the off beat trippy stuff. So yeah, I know I'm not approaching this at the right angle, but it's by design.

I've been going out to 29 palms all of my life. I know that desert like the back of my hand. Abandoned houses that look exactly they did the day they were abandoned, abandoned mining towns out in the middle of the desert, sand dunes....I love the fucking desert!

bone_yer_bike,

Any good spots on the way to Amboy? I would like to do something that would include wildflowers. Which means that something that needs to be planned soon. We could do two separate trips out to the desert.

toweliesbong,

That space junk shot is awesome! Look forward to seeing more of this.

Then you better be going to Amboy because we're going to be adding some stuff to the already trippy stuff out there! April 19!!!

The cabin next to my friend's has a bunch of crazy shit in the "yard". That space junk, the trailer, a whole train car, an old motorhome, and this helmet was just laying there:

Allan, you may want to plan something out to the poppy preserve , Mojave, Red Rock Cyn, etc, soon. Late March, early April will be perfect. I don't think I can join, you, though, until after the poker ride, and by then things might be mellowing out.

Fat tire ride. Take the bikes via car and then hit the dirt trails. Could be able to get to two or three spots per day to ride to, or maybe do a loop. Just matters on what is out there that we agree to go explore.

These all sound like awesome ideas for future trips and camera shooting.
I've been past that aircraft-graveyard quite a few, times during last year.
Some truckers complained about their jobs and how it took them away from friends and family.
Myself, I felt it exposed me to corners of this country I never would've seen had I never done it.

So, enough of my career-retrospective, I say we find out about the aircraft-graveyard, and maybe a ghost-town tour of some type.
Too many people using strict-motorized, methods of exploring these areas.
I say make it predominantly, pedal-power with one, or two support 4x4's,
Especially if we do it during the Summer!!

This would be a time sensitive ride since the wildflowers won't be out there forever. I'll do some research tonite on the areas that are happening.

I really don't think we'll need a 4x4 to get to the areas posted in this thread or the RRRR Poker Run thread. We just drive as far as we can in a regular car, then do the rest by mountain bike. 4x4 will not be turned away, it's just not needed imo.

User1

@user1
-Of course a 4x4 isn't necessary for those trips.
But, I'm referring to those out-of-the-way, 1870's ghost-towns that are located up in the various, mountain ranges that are scattered all over the desert.
Not too many to find in my area, but the Death Valley/Inyo County area are chock full of this sort of thing.
Although, another closer option not requiring 4x4's, would be Randsburg.
I heard about this place where a miner actually spent his entire life tunneling portals through the mountains.

Burro Schmidt's tunnel is a must do, I've ridden my mtn bike from the Garlock Rd to visit it.

A nice 3 day weekend itinerary would be:

poppies and wildflowers in the Antelope Valley
Redrock Cyn
Burro Schmidt's tunnel
hunting for opals near the tunnel
Randsburg for a cherry phosphate
the petroglyphs in China Lake Naval Weapons Station
the pinnacles near Trona
a visit to the Indian Wells Brewing Co on 395

If it was a weekend where I was available we could headquarter and party at the Black Mountain Ranch on Hwy 14.

That sounds like an awesome agenda toweliesbong! I'll look more into your suggestions tonite. I do what to checkout the airplane bone yard though. Looks like no one knows about the yard, so I'll start to inquire.

@user1
-I've heard of it, but have yet to check it out.
However, it kind or reminds me of this place called "Hula-Ville".
It was a tourist trap that used to be between the Main St. and Bear Valley exits alongside Amargosa Rd., that parallels the 15.
It mainly had beer-bottle represntations of Hawaii-inspired art for all to see.
Unfortunately, it was torn down sometime between 1990 and 1995.
