i just got "hit" by a van. what do i do?

Thread started by

I say "hit" because it didnt send me flying, i didnt fall over, and i am not hurt.
I was biking home from the hardware store minding my own business.
When i got swiped by a white van. She then speeded off past me. Her side mirror is now broken. I caught up a few times and tryed to talk to her, basically a "What the hell?" and she just kept staring straight at the road and kept going.
Im not hurt, maybe a small bruise on my left shoulder area from the car, but nothing bad. It doesnt hurt at all.
I do have the license plate number(its from arizona).
What should I do?
by the way, this happened in pomona.

I had thesame thing happen to me in toronto. Side mirror hit me right in the kidney. Hurts like hell.
Since she didnt stop or even have the decency to talk to you I would report it to the police as a hit and run. It will go on her record and I think Arizona and California DMV's share info.

Report it, we need to report anything and everything like this, and make it clear it that they hit you and fled.

Also make sure you write down an accurate description of the driver. VERY IMPORTANT.

Yeah definitely remember all the details on what she looked like. I hope this bitch gets charged, and I don't see why not. Especially if you could ID her.
Keep us posted.

I have a semi good description of the driver;
I am almost positive that it was a rental van. arizona plates, something about rentals on the plate frame.
Why would someone in a white van from arizona come to pomona?
Does this complicate it times a million?

"Why would someone from Arizona come to Pomona?"
If it had Bahama plates there might be reason to dwell, but certainly you can fathom that someone might rent a cargo van to move whatever across the border of a neighboring state, then I'm thinking that mirror might've clipped yer noggin.
Or it very well could be a local who rented the van in Pomona that had been previously driven as a one-way rental by someone else from Arizona to So Cal.
Quit pondering irrelevance or potential complications and file a report with the police!

this person needs to be punished. this person could very well go on to kill someone if they're not stopped now.
file a police report and give a description of the driver. they will be able to find the driver if the car isnt stolen. make sure to point out that YOU WERE INJURED and take pictures of your injury.
if the police give you problems, ask for a supervisor and make sure they file this as a felony hit and run with bodily injury.
the police should be able to tell you what the process will be. just make sure you dont waste any time reporting them. they may be in the area and the police will be able to catch them now.

Ugh...
The cops just showed up.
He pretty much told me that I shouldn't ride my bike in pomona.
He said that a report would be pointless, but I filed regardless.
Hopefully something good comes of this.

Fuck that cop. WTF is wrong with people. You get side-swiped by an ass-hat in a van and suddenly it's you would should be off the road. I don't see how filing a report or pressing some kind of charge won't do anything. File whatever you can anyway.

What does the copy of your report say? There should be a form number on it in the lower corner. What's the form number on it?

I filled out an incident report form with the license number and description of what happened and description of the driver(as best as i could).
He was actually pretty nice about it, and took a copy of the license plate for himself. he said if he saw the van he would pull it over.
It just kind of pisses me off that the police department reccommends not biking...
its my only mode of transportation.
luckily my bike is alright and im alright.
The cop was actually pretty cool. he recognized my bike. that was cool.

No more hit and run motorists. Zero tolerance for those malicious cowards. Filing a report was the stand-up thing to do not only for yourself, but for every cyclist. Thank you.

he wasn't telling you not to bike, because he didn't want you to ride your bicycle...
I think he was just trying to tell you it's not a safe thing to do...in that particular city...he's probably seen his share of drunk drivers and hit and runs...

we should drive tanks and monster trucks so that if we hit a car we can blame them for driving inferior vehicles. they're just being unsafe out there.

If this is a rental, someone's not going to be getting their security deposit back.
That and they have this persons DL and credit history on their computers so tracking through the rental company won't be a hard thing at all.

neverclever,
unfortunately, THAT is part of the mentality that makes a lot of people buy SUV's and large vehicles...
if everyone drove smaller vehicles, there'd be more space for bicycles

yeap.
my friend once walked around her city and put flyers on big SUVs with a cute picture of a giant next to a car saying something like, "you must be a giant because your car is TOO BIG!" an SUV in a hurry scares the shit out of me. also, SUV's usually add a point to a drivers dumb factor.

SUV drivers=Wannabe truck drivers.
Sit in an office all day, dream about getting out on the big road, but don't want to live the lifestyle.
This also goes for those meatheads that drive the F-250's like jerkoffs when hauling a 30-40ft toy-hauler with all the toys they're too chickenshit to ride to the trails on.
Doing at least 80-90mph along Bear Valley, swerving all over the place while his four kids scream for dear life and the airhead of a wife says, "Faster honey!!"
