Can i join this ALC team? Unless the team i'm on gets it together for the ALC themselves
robin swabin01.17.09 - 6:24 pm

i have no idea if you can join the team or not. im not a spokesperson for them so you would have to ask ben ephemerae about that. but its ok because you dont have to be on the team to do this ride.
its on 3/14/09 and is posted in the ride calendar.

the first time i conquered the mountain was october of 06, i ditched math class. i had an empty two litre bottle of diet mtn dew filled with water, a few granola bars, and two grams of homegrown. i got on my bike and just started riding. i didnt really have a destination planned. i stopped at the quarry and hid in the shade and got stoned. then i got stoned again. then i started riding again. before i knew it i was at the top, even though close to three hours of climbing in my granny gear had passed. i looked at my cyclometer and had only gone twenty miles. i laid in the middle of the road going towards rose valley and layed there for a few minutes and got stoned again. off in the distance i saw a fire truck coming towards me. i moved to the side of the road and as it got closer, it asked me if everything was alright. it was, because i felt like i was in heaven. they smiled and nodded, and continued on their way down the mountain. maybe thirty minutes and a few bowls later, i followed them. by then it was a little after five oclock. as i coasted down the mountain at nearly 50mph i felt an epiphany. i cant explain it.

is it doable on a single speed with a 46-16?
and after we get to the top, if i were to flip to fixed, my ratio is 46-15. it would be mad training doing 50mph downhills on a fixed, as long as we're not going to be going any faster than that.
....and then again it just might be suicide.
oodlesofpoodles02.4.09 - 11:48 am

50 mph on a 48:15 is going to be 284 rpm
good luck with that.
_iJunes02.4.09 - 11:53 am

and you've got the logic all wrong, the fixed side will help you climbing versus the single speed just cause you get rolling momentum

mapmyride.com tells me that the elevation varies between 4% and 6%, and at one point jumps to 8% grade.
the first time i did PCH on a 46-15, a 6% grade by pepperdine completely killed me.
if you have a single speed, bring your walking shoes. and yes, leave your beach cruiser at home.

we meet at my old house at 11am and will ride out by noon.
that means that you are responsible for eating a decent meal beforehand.
the meet spot is
848 woodland ave #2
ojai ca 93023
there is plenty of street parking on mirror lake ave, and i suggest that if you are driving you park there, because your car will get towed out of the condos if you park on woodland. google map the address to cut out confusion.

I want more challenging distance and climbing rides... bring it on.

you dont have to, no. it would be wise to bring a sweatshirt or something to wear on the way down, because you will get cold quickly. luckily we will have a minivan following us for sag support, so you can put whatever in the back and it will be at the top when you need it.
