so
awhile back, i received a ticket while riding my bike with headphones on on my school campus.
it was for 164 dollars.
i chose the trial by written declaration option, i did the payment over the phone for 164, wrote my declaration and mailed it in with my evidence and a copy of my ticket.
i was told that if my case gets proven innocent i get my money back, if its guilty, they keep my money, if i dont respond and dont turn in my declaration, they close the case and keep the money.
today, i got a piece of mail saying that i owe 801 dollars for not showing up to court.
i was never given a choice to come in.
i was just waiting to see if my declaration was approved or not.
WTF?!?!?
WTF DO I DO NOW?!!?

u gettin played!!!
I went to court today looking at three charges. Expired tags, expired insurance, and the biggie, failure to appear. Got all three dropped mofo!!! The police officer didn't show this time, so just the failure to appear was what I was looking at. The judge tells me to seat down after I pleaded innocent. So I'm the last one in court, and we discuss the charges. I tell him the judge I spoke to at my last appearance told me if I brought proof of insurance, he would dismiss all the charges. We go back and forth a bit, finally he goes, "all three charges dismissed". HELL YEAH!!!
btw I sent off my registration a long time before it was due and I did have insurance. It was during that time that DMV was laying off people and shit wasn't getting done was the reason I didn't have my tags.

Just tell them what you are telling us. If its the truth then it wont be a problem.
Print out the transaction proving that you paid the first amount due.
They make mistakes all the time, they're true idiots.

just go to court and tell them what happened. I got into the same kind of situation over a ticket for my bicycle registration.... MAKE SURE you see a REAL judge not a judge pro tem. Judge pro tems are regular lawyers who do not give a fuck about you. Elected judges are much more human.

Go to the City Clerk's window and ask him/her what's going on. Be real nice or else they wont give a shit about you and most likely give you a hard time.

You're good. The same thing happened to me when I did my TBD. The communication within the court bureacracy is not good; the left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing. I just ignored the letter and everything was fine, but you can go see the clerk if it helps you sleep at night.

yeah, i have everything i need to prove my point,
all copies of paperwork, the certified mail receipt and proof that they received it, my bank statement with the charge on there.
i cant have my license suspended though, it can easily caus eme to lose my job.
