Just buy a complete bike at bikesdirect.com for $250-300. It'll come out cheaper.

I've gotten tubes for $2.97 there and a tire once for super cheap.

On geared bikes, yes.
On entry level steel fixies, not so much. You can spend $250-600+ on very similar bikes, except that one might have a better paint scheme.
They're all being sourced from Taiwan/China at this point, so the brand name doesn't mean a whole heck of a lot.
