It is interesting. Seems like any glance at Craig's List down here shows a used bike bubble too.
Everything's gotten more expensive. Just a few years ago the absolute top of the line road bikes from the big names were not over $5000 and now they're pushing double that. They're certainly not half the weight or twice as fast or can make me a sandwich.

Sad thing is, less than that amount of money could be used to help whip yourself into shape and eventually make the spandex clad operators of these vessels, yo' bitch!!!

Shit bikes have never been cheaper! You can get a full suspension bike for less than $70!
Not the best bike, but still, I bet it would be useful to someone.
cheap bike
One of my first bikes was something along these lines.

Yeah, I rode some shit Murray MTB with a one-piece back in 10th grade.
It lasted for about six months and the cranks snapped, the rear hub melted, and the forks snapped.
I was the epitome of "ride it 'til it breaks!!"

Two years ago, I visited my daughter in Boise Idaho for a week and wanted to ride while she was at her job.
I found a $50 mt. bike on Craig's List. It was a women's Murry that the lady selling it hadn't ridden 100 miles since she bought it new.
Everything worked on it and the tires held air. I bought some Tri Flow at a bike shop and rode that bike all over town, including some light off roading. When I left, my daughter kept the bike.
As long as I don't try this in Portland or some other bike-mecca, I hope to do this again when I visit a city I have to fly to.
The asking prices of bikes in L.A. is a little crazy too. Not outragious yet, but it's getting there.

Inferior metal?
I jumped this thing off these dirt mounds behind a Food4Less a couple of times, that and hard riding elsewhere probably brought on its demise.
