When is a bike really stolen?

So I’m Highland Park on York and Fig waiting for the 84 and then guy is there with this big goofy smile on his face, we make eye contact and he comes over to me and tells me about this bike he just found, i give it a look and its a ok looking Schwinn chicks bike with brown leather stitch handles and blue frame it had a Dutch look to it. He was on and on about how he saw it sitting in the same spot for two weeks and i remember seeing it and thinking to me self damn that bike sat there for 2 weeks and no one took it, and this guy is rambling on and then he says "I just kicked the lock a few times and it came off" Now the bike was had patched of rust on it and it looked like it had been sitting out, so how long does a bike have to sit out chained until someone can claim it?

if I decide I want to chain my bike to a post, are you saying that after a certain time period it is no longer mine? I thought it would always be mine, of course that is unless somebody steals it.

Its yours but if you leave it for a day or so, but 2 weeks or more then you are in that abandon zone, but im asking how much time will have to pass until it is abandon

Well, the guy stole the bike, plain and simple.
Whatever mental gymnastics he went through to justify his action were just to allow him to feel better about his theft.
Someone may have locked it there while on a binder and forgot where it was, or who knows what the real story is?
If it were some other object perhaps I wouldn't be so hard ass about it, but its personal for me when someone steals somebody's bike.
I've lost 2 bikes to theft over the years and it still hurts to think about it.
That said, anyone who values their bike would not leave it secured with a cheap lock in H.P. for several weeks!

If someone takes something that is not theirs they are stealing it. Had it not had a lock on it it would still be stolen. The fact it had a lock guarantees he stole it. I hope that douche bag gets hit by a car riding it.
