hey scumbags! i have some ?s about cyclocross.im really thinking about doing some of the socal cyclocross events this year but really dont know too much about it.where can i find a good deal on a bike and what would you guys recommend for a first bike.for single speed races whats a good gearing combo and is there any regulations regarding gearing.whats the average entry fee?
i know socal cross puts on some weekly events for begginers and ill probably be hitting some of those up.
i know erock, cole and some others do this shit and i wanna see if i can hang with those cool cats

get a bike, put some fat tires on it and ride till you puke.
you might want to practice dismounts a couple times.
races are usually $20 entry fee + $10 license fee if you don't have an annual USA cycling license.
Gearing for single speed is usually 17-20x42 depending on how much mud/hills.

Im in the same boat so to speak... (though I have a bike)... Im thinking of hitting up some events just to embarrass myself more in life.
Anyhow, concerning the bike... if you cannot find a good deal used, consider the following:
http://www.bikesdirect.com/products/motobecane/uno.htm
No tax
and i think free shipping
I looked into this shop a bit, and it seems fine... Ive seen some peeps on this rig and its not bad at all, especially at the price. I dont like v-brake style pads, but at least you get a set of decent cantis.
Plus the frame allows a good amount of tire clearance. i found a fixed gear rider who does cyclocross on the MTBR forum when I was looking into this bike... he put some 38c tires which is a good size for fucking around.
i attached a photo of their setup.
I ride a cross-check and I put 29x1.8 tires on it for the trails, along with midge bars... its pretty fun, but not to forgiving on the trails (i only ride rigid, so im use to it).
The point being: unless the event rules a tire size max, you can find frames that allow you kind of run a 29er fat style tires (higher 30s or low 40s). Which is both cool for hitting the trails, and doing cyclocross events (i imagine, or hopefully will find out).
anyhow, just thought Id post... it would be nice to get more info on cross events if anyone wants to share

there's a free cyclocross clinic this saturday (8/12) morning at eldorado park in Long Beach. Hopefully there will be some lessons on dismounting, barriers and whatnot and then my friend said there will be a funrace. It's put on by Velo Allegro, juniors and mountain bikes are welcome.
I have an older Redline Conquest that I use as a commuter, but I want to race this season...I've never ridden cross before so it should be pretty hilarious. I took it on a lunch ride trail (easy fireroad/singletrack loop, not too many hills) yesterday and it was super fun. Except for sandy washes, yikes.
I bought it for $400 out of craigslist ~3 years ago....so there are deals to be had.

Dingo...
Richbell...
Lets do some events... I can probably start trying it out in a couple weeks...
Im going to start my own team too.. i already have the name and logo
I stenciled it a few times around LACC a while back
We can have some dope rules:
1. Never win
2. Dont train, just ride whenever
3. Get in the way of competitors.
4. If we so happen to beat anyone -- brag, boast, like crazy... to their face
You in?

Why not just ride your own race and not get in the way of those who are better than you.
Time for my Annual Cyclocross excuse. Wish I could race this year but I will be in... Washington DC. Thank you for your time.
