Hey to anyone who may know, I am curious to what happened to me earlier this evening. My girlfriend and I live in Marina Del Rey, and often ride along the bike path that goes from Will Rogers state Beach, down beyond Redondo Beach. On the way back from Redondo going to the Marina, it was dark, and I noticed that there was a large group of cyclists coming towards us on the two lane bike path. At first I was confused because people started throwing out profanity at my girlfriend and I as we were riding against the crowd, staying as far right as possible to avoid a collision. I'm not sure if I'm ignorant to protocol here, but almost the entire group that passed us, I"m guessing anywhere from 75 to 100 people were yelling not only profanity but also yelling, "cyclist on your left" Needless to say, I've done nothing wrong in my mind at this point, both of us are as far off to the right as we can be on our side of the path, and then three of these cyclists in a row shoulder check me, the third knocking me off my bike and causing me to break not only one of my toes, but also fracture a metatarsal in my right foot. The entire crowd finished passing and cursing us out, while I tried to let them know that I was in some serious pain at their hand.
That being said. I was curious to know if anyone knows what meetup that may have been called or who organized it. I don't have many encounters with cycling enthusiasts, and usually when I do, it's one person, and I always try to be courteous, and keep my eyes open and obey all the laws. But this is completely out of hand. That entire group needs to be shamed. It would be one thing if I were riding the wrong way without any lights and such and littering all over, but I did nothing to deserve bodily injury. If my girlfriend would have been hurt, who knows what I may have been moved to do........... I would appreciate any information from anyone that knows anything about that group. Thanks for reading this, and if you read this, I hope that you are a more courteous person than anyone in the group I encountered earlier this evening.

cyclist on your left would be something im used to hearing, people often shout out things like that, potholes, cars ect. but as far as profanity and shoulder checking WHAT THE FUCK. we aren't about that. i know what ride that was, its called taco tuesdays and it meets at media park at venice and culver on tuesday nights. im sorry to hear about your incident, i know the people who put on this ride and they dont condone this type of behavior. there were some bad eggs out tonight who have to do shit like this to tarnish the ridazz image. they even stole someones bike who was on the ride.

im so sorry to hear that. i can't imagine that the accident was intentional, but probably just an inexperienced rider. the yelling "cyclist on your left" was probably intended to prevent such riders from riding into you. i just wish those three assholes had listened.

sorry to hear this. as everyone has said, people were probably trying to warn the group of your presence, as you were on their left.
i've done group rides that have went on bike paths at night, but never as big as 75 people, and this is probably why.
hope your foot and toes heal quickly.

Eeeesh not good!
As larsen said there are occasionally some bad eggs that can tend to bring a lot of negative attention to the group as a whole which is made up of very good peeps.
Very, very sorry to hear about your experience and injuries. I'm sure the last thing any group ride wants to do is hurt or put another cyclist in danger, but unfortunately there are sometimes complete assholes who show up and associate themselves making it look like the whole group is reckless and dangerous- which is generally not the case.

Riding on the bike path with big groups is fun. But every time I have done it there is always someone riding in the other lane. And there is always pissed bikers going the other way. Maybe the bike path should be avoided if this type of thing is going to happen.

Sorry to hear about this. I know the leader of this ride, XL, would not be to happy about knowing that shit like this went down. Do you think you could ID any of the three riders? There's a folder with pics of their previous rides here, http://www.midnightridazz.com/artist.php?artistId=456 If think you could ID these jackasses, you might want to go to the beginning of the next ride. They ride on Tuesday night. Here's the pages of the MR rides that were scheduled 8/18/09

http://www.midnightridazz.com/events.php?pgnum=10
The ride that was suggested that this happened, Taco Tuesday, has the XL's contact info listed, XL (310)6211869. The guy is a real cool dude that doesn't put up with this crap.
Good luck with this and let us know if we could be of help further.

wow man.... i'm sorry about all that. I was on the ride but i never saw any non-group members get hurt. the cursing probably came from too many drunk and high people being together and getting over-excited (this happens alot on rides). However, when people were saying "cyclist on the left" they were most likely referring to you. so that we wouldn't run into you. keep in mind the intoxication and the need to announce other people or things in our path for other riders. however, hurting others and being rude to perfectly nice people is NOT what ANY rides are about, and i wish you luck in finding the jerks who hurt you.

Hey leisure,
So sorry to hear about that incident, where did it happen (the more details the better) and what did these idiots look like. In no way do we condone any person or people doing such things, we actually had other groups (VCM) riding along with Taco Tuesdays as well last night for the first leg or so, I was seeing a bunch of people acting like idiots and we were yelling at them to follow the Rulezz of the Ride (stay right, call out hazards, etc.) OR not to ride around us. We don't have a membership or such and pretty much any asshole who sees my friends and I riding down the path can follow behind without us knowing what the fuck they are doing, just like anyone else on the bike path or street. Email me at XL@RedStarArtists.com or hit up this forum, I will definitely help you find those assholes if I recognise any of them.
Sincerely,
XL
Hope your foot and toe gets better soon.

Thanks all to your responses and support, it's refreshing to know there were members in this group who are possibly aware of the aforementioned incident. I appreciate that many of you have stepped forward concerning this event. I figured that the comments could be something to do with riders that are ahead alerting riders that are behind them.
I am not from the valley, 818 was coincidentally the date it happened, just loosely following the format of the site, :)
I prob couldn't pick up the offending cyclist/s out of a lineup. All I know is that the one that dealt the last check was about 3/4 of the way back, and was sporting a helmet, tighter fitting clothes, and rode a more track style bike. Blinkers and lights in my immediate field made it hard to make out any detail.
I may join a future taco tuesday ride after I heal, You'll know me, I'll wear a shirt with my name. So if you see me, say hi.

Yeah, definitely go checkout the ride and see what kind of peeps there really are on the ride.
Just about every ride on here has the potential of having some dickheads on it. Just so happened to be TT this night. But you'll see just about all the ridazz are good people.

Hey Leisure,
Definitely come by and join us any time, are scheduling is on the right-hand side of this site, we ride to many different parts of Los Angeles so be sure to check the schedule to see which date is best for you. (sometimes we do longer rides).
If you haven't already (and like I tell everyone who rides), please read:
"The Rulezz of the Ride" the link is at the bottom of every page of this website. Or you can copy and paste this = http://midnightridazz.com/policies.php
Hope your heal time is fast, I will say "hi" if I see you in your "leisure" shirt, or say "hi" to me (I'm the x-large guy in the Taco Tuesdays shirt). Sincerely,
XL

@XL i didn't mean to hurt your feelings- it's nothing against you. you put a lot of effort into this ride, but it seems at least half the people that show up are always up to no good/stealing/getting as trashed/high as humanly possible. hopefully the good people that attend can keep an eye out- hopefully things get better. i haven't been attending many MR rides lately and getting back into them is hard because there are bad folks on all the rides now and people getting way too trashed etc. the bigger the crowd, the more trouble. i don't know if there's a solution- LA is full of fucked up people.

wow, your attitude and countenance in this situation is pretty awesome
i'm really sorry that this happened to you, when it comes down to it, riders, like other people, sometimes get some jerks up in the bunch
sounds like a few of these jerks in the group honed in on you =(
the should check is wack
the screaming profanity is wack
these things are unnecessary and don't result in anything good
peace love bikes my friends, ride on
