"WHO's assessment system was based on five indicators: overall level of population health; health inequalities (or disparities) within the population; overall level of health system responsiveness (a combination of patient satisfaction and how well the system acts); distribution of responsiveness within the population (how well people of varying economic status find that they are served by the health system); and the distribution of the health system's financial burden within the population (who pays the costs)."
what if a country's population has more health problems? either from pollution, genetics, etc.
how is overall level of population health determined? they didn't come and run tests on me... if they went to my HMO for statistics, they wouldn't be getting perfectly accurate information because my HMO refuses to run tests it doesn't think are necessary.
this study is flawed.. throw it out

honestly the most important thing is the appearance of doing the best job relative to the rest of the world.
if the WHO released a report claiming the US as the best... people would feel better about their health system
it's true, but it doesn't mean our health system is any better
stop using comparisons to determine how good our system is because each country has unique problems and challenges and the same systems won't work just anywhere. they have to take into account our differences.

Wait, you're saying this report is flawed cause they didn't run tests on you???? Are you serious???? LOL Dude, they more I read about your posts the more you're looking somewhat whacked out. The WHO is made up of 193 members from all over the world. These members vote on the programs and policies of the organization. There isn't another organization that is as unbiased in a report of this nature that comes close to them. If there is, let's here about it.
This is what they say about themselves,
WHO is the directing and coordinating authority for health within the United Nations system. It is responsible for providing leadership on global health matters, shaping the health research agenda, setting norms and standards, articulating evidence-based policy options, providing technical support to countries and monitoring and assessing health trends.
In the 21st century, health is a shared responsibility, involving equitable access to essential care and collective defence against transnational threats.
How could be so critical of a organization like this just because you personally was not examined? YO WACK!

I'm pretty sure the WHO knows what the eff they're talking about and know how to conduct an exhaustively accurate and unbiased study accounting for differences that would skew the results.

hahaha... you are just too stupid to understand my point which was explained later. the point is that they are basing their findings on data gathered from most likely health care providers which are not doing a good job diagnosing and testing people. i didn't see any sources sited in the report and also i've read they no longer do the rankings.
this is also something i found which talks about their rankings:
"The World Health Report 2000, prepared by the World Health Organization, presented performance rankings of 191 nations' health care systems. These rankings have been widely cited in public debates about health care, particularly by those interested in reforming the U.S. health care system to resemble more closely those of other countries. Michael Moore, for instance, famously stated in his film SiCKO that the United States placed only 37th in the WHO report. CNN.com, in verifying Moore's claim, noted that France and Canada both placed in the top 10.
Those who cite the WHO rankings typically present them as an objective measure of the relative performance of national health care systems. They are not. The WHO rankings depend crucially on a number of underlying assumptions— some of them logically incoherent, some characterized by substantial uncertainty, and some rooted in ideological beliefs and values that not everyone shares.
The analysts behind the WHO rankings express the hope that their framework "will lay the basis for a shift from ideological discourse on health policy to a more empirical one." Yet the WHO rankings themselves have a strong ideological component. They include factors that are arguably unrelated to actual health performance, some of which could even improve in response to worse health performance. Even setting those concerns aside, the rankings are still highly sensitive to both measurement error and assumptions about the relative importance of the components. And finally, the WHO rankings reflect implicit value judgments and lifestyle preferences that differ among individuals and across countries."

Of course the CATO institute would say that. They're among the loudest "Think Tank" voices for conservative opposition to health care reform.
If you suspect bias at the WHO then aren't you smart enough not to trash them by regurgitating bias CATO blather? In fairness, I wouldn't trust MSNBC (or Fox) to be unbiased about WHO. So don't go quoting a known quantity like CATO.

Yeah I saw your silly comparison with the frogs thing, but I figured you probably regretted posting that. I know I would! Yes some countries differ on what they're health problems are and MAYBE how to resolve it, but overall everyone wants a healthy life and be able to see a doctor to get matters resolved. It's not like comparing apples and oranges. It may be the equivalent of comparing different variety of apples.
So I guess the Cato Institute is your offer of a better organization to follow regarding this issue? I have alot of problems with the Cato Institute. They are not a world organization, and no where near what WHO is in their membership and procedures. Cato scholars base their work on a variety of religious perspectives. Big problem when religion plays a part of society in whole on an issue like this. Furthermore they are tied to corporate support, unlike WHO.
Is this the best you have? Frankly Cato is not any better than WHO in terms of structure or credibility.

And if WHO is such a disreputable, biased organization (which it isn't), then why does our own US Dpt of Health and Human services and our Center for Disease control follow first and foremost the WHO when tracking swine flu and other global pandemics.
Maybe CATO has an answer for that disconnect in trashing WHO.

you can attack the source, but the points are valid
if no one ever finds out if there is something wrong with me, how can my health be properly measured? it cannot... you cannot take into account unknowns. a lot of times you will see a sudden and dramatic increase in the prevalence statistics of a condition, but it's not because it's more prevalent, it could be because dateline aired a show on it and people asked to get tested or because a new test was developed for it.
i know my current health care provider sucks, and i know the biggest contributing factor: the shitty doctors. and because the doctors are crap, no health care plan will work until we can produce better doctors.
snowcone09.22.09 - 4:20 am
reply
Not enough doctors seems to be the problem.
The few times I've gone into a hospital, there were patients just crowding up the waiting rooms waiting to be seen by what few nurses there were available.
Then after that, it was maybe, 1-3 doctors working the entire hospital during a given shift.
In this regard, the education system needs to be overhauled to the point where prospective students will be able to focus solely on careers.
Not having to take an assload of general ed classes that will probably never see any use aside from striking up conversation some place.
