Snowcoe:
I did the map with elevations so you can see it is a tough route. Also going by JPL up arroyo seco you will need a mountain bike or CX bike because the trail turns to dirt and has several stream crossings. In addition Angeles crest highway is not a cyclist friendly route. many blind turns and fast drivers.
I am not trying to dis your ride but just give you some local knowledge of the area from my experience.

As far as the route, you can go up foothill to Angeles crest highway to start the climb instead of going up the arroyo secco.
Or you can go the back route via Big Tujunga Cyn, but again mountain road that may not be safe to bike on.
alt route or you can start from north Hollywood to make it shorter.
There may be people that have done these climbs before, but personally would not do them on a bike. Not saying it can't happen, but my 2c.
Any bike camping opportunities in the LA area are going to require some altitude if you want to hit a nice area. but again YMMV

going up angeles crest, you will need gears. i can only think of a handful of people that can make it over the first ridge fixed.

I like the route and the destination. The only thing I would question is, are fires allowed? If not, then lets do it when it is allowed? I don't mind the dirt road or the narrow shoulders. The narrow shoulders are on some parts of the road, and if drivers know there's bikes on the road, they won't be cutting the blind curves. Take a look at the road. Alot of it has a good shoulder. The dirt road can be avoided coming back down no problem.

yeah the other way around it is to go up big tujunga, which also a pretty decent climb.

actually the shoulder tends to disappear on the outward turns, which require you to assume control of the lane.
its about 1-2 hours of nonstop climbing though. closer to 2 if you're not used to riding mountains.

wow yeah, honestly to get where you want to go, you're better off taking big tujunga. taking ACH will set up up a couple hundred feet higher and then sends you back down to meet with big tujunga.
going up big tujunga isnt bad
but you're not going to carry ANYTHING up there on your bike.
fixed gears will probably not make it.
brakeless will die.
the only thing i hate about big tujunga especially in the summer are the huge bugs that fly around you, while you're going up the hill at 6 mph. and there are some big ass bugs. don't have any red or yellow on your clothes or your bike. these nasty ass hornets/wasps will be attracted to you, and you'll be an easy target going up the shit slow.

Has anyone talked about the "Hike and Bike"? Sycamore Canyon in Pt. Mugu State Park (p.s., note it's spelled MUGU) has spaces for hikers and bikers at $3 per night, no reservations but it's first come, first served.
They don't allow you to bring in a car. I organized a ride once to Carpinteria State Beach where they also have "Hike and Bike" spaces with some young kids. I talked to the ranger a few days before and they allowed me to bring in a van with their tents and stuff. I wasn't allowed to leave the van there though. If they weren't going to allow that, I was going to find a weekend where I could get space for one vehicle and drive the stuff in.
