Thread Box:
S.P.L.A.S.H. mob SHARK
Thread started by tivu at 07.20.09 - 4:49 pm

I would like to personally commend the man with the purple bandana who, while all other onlookers just whined about the "endangered" shark being caught, just picked it up and tossed it back in, despite the menacing cholo who stood over it.

Prime example of less talk - more action.

I could see the cholo's view, in that it was his party's catch, but in this situation, mr. purple bandana cut through all the bullshit and just did what he thought was right, instead of just standing there watching like it was some TV show.

Indeed, it could have gone very wrong immediately following, but I had his back as hopefully the rest of you would have.

Wasn't the shark dead already? I can't believe someone threw it back. It wasn't your fish to throw back. Think about it from the fisherman's perspective: He went to the pier to have a relaxing day enjoying the sport he loves when a huge group of people show up. Then, when he finally catches a fish a crowd forms and is yelling at him to throw it back. I was up there too, but I just wanted to see the shark because, honestly, I've never seen one before - I guess I'd call that primal curiosity. Fishing is such a relaxing and peaceful activity. If I had been fishing that day I would have been mad when C.R.A.N.K. mob showed up. I was actually kind of glad when the cops kicked us out because I was looking at the people fishing and I know we were ruining their day. Be green on your own time and don't push your beliefs on other people. Don't get me wrong though, splash mob was amazing. I guess this is just one of the challenges of having a day ride.

I can see your point, and after a bit more research I'm now quite secure in assuming it was actually a leopard shark. I don't believe it was endangered, however, based on it's relatively small size(2 feet at the most) compared to the average size of an adult leopard shark being between 50 and 60 inches, it was apparently a very young one.

To be quite honest, I probably would have thrown it back too. I was there, but I didn't even realize there was any shark commotion going on. I see both sides, but the bottom line is when you are standing right there, and you see a helpless animal gasping for it's life, you don't really have time to stop and consider who's feelings you are going to hurt. You just do what you feel is right at that moment. FYI, most of the pier "fishermen" don't have the required by law permit to fish anyway, and the guy who threw back the shark really did them a favor because who would want to eat fish/shark from Samo bay anyway?

It's a shark, they are tasty, and vicious, and in my opinion the asshole of the animal kingdom. They really are jerk animals. I only eat seafood, but not other meat. I had a chill time at splash mob. I just don't see why this is a thread about a freaking shark. It's not like something cute and cuddly you could identify with. It really was the fisherman's choice as to throw it back in or not. I'd just like to enjoy a bike ride, without the lapd getting pissed off at us.

If the shark was "endangered" or not the legal size.

It was not the fisherman's shark to keep. Just like it is not Exxon's ocean to dump oil into.

A bike thief doesn't have rights to a bike once he gets caught. Just as a poacher doesn't have rights to keep an endangered animal when he his caught.

If the shark was a legit and legal catch than the dude who threw it back is a self righteous asshole, which he may or not be either way.

leopard sharks aren't endangered or even threatened, but i'm sure that one is in great shape after sitting in the hot sun for 30 minutes and then being dropped off a pier.

And, while I don't know the circumstances of that shark and that fisherman, before we go throwing more random shit off piers, it might be good for us to remember that a lot of the people fishing on piers in LA don't get to spend their Saturday riding bikes around and drinking before heading to In-and-Out for a socially-approved protein source.

I may be wrong, but the shark was only sitting for about 10 minutes of gawking.

so was this shark endangered or not?

who called that out? does this person know ocean life well enough to say that something caught of the pier is endangered? were there signs on the pier giving warning to the fishermen, that these shark should be catch and release?

Just be glad someone else didn't get tossed into the drink after the shark.

"Swim to your freedom my shark bro.........AHHHHHHHH!!!!!.....****SPLASH****....screams....****chomp****"

This kind of reminds me of that news story awhile back where some activists were pushing over the canoes of a Native American tribe doing a traditional whale hunt with Seadoos.

lets say ur riding ur bike. drinking a beer, smokin some weed, having a great ol time.

and then some d-bag comes up and slaps ur weed and beer out of ur hand bc it's illegal/not safe/ putting others in danger/etc.

would you have gone and done this without a mob of dudes on bikes behind you?

would you have had the balls then?

after the incident in HP, how are you gonna go up to random people, grab their fish and throw it back in the ocean?

what if this guy had a gun. what if this guy threw a punch at you?

KiMS1

it is his "choice" to break the law

It is also the "choice" of somebody who intervenes to enforce the law ... if that was indeed the case.

If somebody is holding wildlife that they have no business with than a person setting it free is actually doing the poacher a favor, because compared to getting caught. losing an illegal fish is not that big a deal.

It sounds like the shark was not endangered.
I have no fucking idea. I wasn't there.

but the status of the animal makes all the difference

After research, I have concluded that the shark was not endangered. I personally don't say anything at these events, which is why in the initial post I had put the word endangered in quotations. The word "endangered" came from the crowd of people gawking at the shark on the ground, and for all intensive purposes, that was the consensus of what anyone knew of the shark at the time for whatever reason.

My commendation went to the person who saw it fit to act in a situation where urgency and lack of information dictated few other options.

i agree with you that its nice to see people take action.

but i just bc some smchoe says it's an endangered shark, doesn't make it right for him to grab the man's catch and toss it back in the ocean.

i mean, if u can justify this, you can justify all sorts of other things.

"hey man, ur wearing shoes made in a sweatshop, im going to steal them off ur feet and toss them in the trash even though u were wearing them unknowingly."

were there any posted signs?

most state parks and fishing areas have posted signs if the wildlife are endangered or if they are not safe to consume.

these placards have a pic/photo of the fish/bird/whatever with a description (size, color, season).

was there any signs for this endangered fish?

but let's say if it was endangered, some guy minding his own business is fishing. obviously he's not some poacher, he's just some schmoe fishing on his day off. a group of people on bikes come by, look at his catch and throw his shit back in teh water.

doesn't that give all of us a bad name?

Bottom line reality is that while it would be absurd to assume the family of the fisherman starved because of their loss of a shark, what we do know is that a shark MAY have been saved thanks to the now overly-discussed actions, as opposed to knowing for certain that the shark would have died a needless and unnecessary death based on the fact that the fishermen did not even have a receptacle large enough to house the shark for live transport.

i didnt say anything about a family starving.

its more like,

dudes is having a good time fishing and shit, some other dude comes up states something that may or may not be true and tosses his shit back in teh water.

idk,
