your anxiety will be fine. dont use it as a crutch, use it as something to help you get faster (and get out of the park quicker than anyone else).

Hey everyone looks like you want to do a Silo run.
Can the fixies handle the climb? Kinda Steep.
Otherwise I suggested to Lee doing a Beach run over Sepuveda to
Santa Monica pier and back? It's about a 35 miles round trip.
Or we could do the China Town thing.

heres my dilemma, i get up at 5 every morning, and need my sleep because i dont come home til 8 ish.
now wylie has no excuse being that he is unemployed or only working part time.
the past 2 weeks, i've made it home, and find myself wayyy to tired to make it back out.
btw craig, a couple of us are doing the LA Circuit race on the 29th, its a 16 mi course for cat 5 what do you think

I like the original route as well, but only because I'm planning on dropping at White Oak, and I'd rather be riding with you guys when I go out there.
than again, my bicycle is not being cooperative, so I may not make it out at all :(

Good ride last night.
The 5 surviviors including me kept a smooth pace

Sounds like ya'll had fun last night... I miss riding with you guys.
It was just all of the normal wear and tear bike trouble at once- 3 failed inner tube patches, a squeaky hub, and a frighteningly creaky bottom bracket. All simple fixes, just not when I'm about to leave the house. Thanks for the offer though.

i was going to cut left and go home when we passed victory, so i slowed down, but then i convinced myself to keep going. i got on the redline at sunset and vermont after eating a donut at tangs. that guy with the trek softride frame (or whatever you want to call it) was making a bunch of noise like his bike was going to fall apart. gears make me nervous because i cant slow down with my legs.

i did that one time mitch and i tried to catch up to you guys when instead you turned the ride around toward long beach due to rain or something. it was one of the first ones, hah. been busy as hell.. Also been riding my fixed lately, and been leading a ride around my neck of the woods. It's pretty damn big and stable now so I'm gonna start hitting up my LA rides again :) heard the caturdays are getting seriously epic.. me wants in :D

i cant even begin to explain how freaking awesome that ride was. it was pretty tough and quick and long but that all made the experience better when making it back. it was definitely a great ride and i just wish i could've kept up a little bit longer. i'll be for sure attending again in the future.

Craig, We did not realize that you were not in our group for a while. I was in the back with Lee and I thought you were in the front group. When I pulled up and noticed that you were not there, I asked, "Where is Craig." One of the fixie guys told us that the guys with the TriSpokes took off and is way up ahead. We thought you were ahead of us for a long time.
The reason I ran that red light was becasue we raced up to the light thinking we could make it and I did not want to slam on my brakes and have a fixie rear end me. I had a fixie run into me a few weeks ago. You were there. Remember.
Anyways, we did not intentionally leave you, but you did get infront of the group and slam on your brake. That was not cool.

Btw, Craig- I have an old Shimano 105 9sp hub. Problem is, I don't have a cassette/shifter to match. In the interest of me getting gears, is there anything you could do to help?

105 9 speed can't be that old.
shifters are expensive, cassettes are like 30 bucks.
you're better off going downtube, and get the remaining setup for like 50-60 brand new.
evan from metropolis was selling a pair of tiagra shifters for cheap, but after i stalled and he found out how much they were worth, well. yeah....

what exactly do you need? or trying to do ?
Are you thinking of putting gears on your Pugeot ?
If so do you have only a hub? no wheel ?
you will also need a ft gear set up as well, as your chain will be prone to falling off with out a ft derailuer.
are you looking for downtube shifters or bar mounted ?

No, I've got a Cannondale in the works at the Kitchen. The hub's in a wheel (the first one I built, so I'm rather attached to it). Junu, I don't think I can use downtube shifters, I broke the skewer to attach them accidentally. I have just about everything else I need for the bike. The only reason I'm not using those from the Kitchen is I'm worried about spacing compatibility.

The route is usually posted on this thread before the ride starts, sometimes it goes in the ride listing as well. And sometimes we just decide where to go at the start. So keep your eye on this... or just come out! If you're somewhere you'll get lost, we won't drop you.

the route that was posted a few days ago for last night wasnt the actual route that we took last night.
my favorite part of last night was drafting lee up sunset from downtown and then him hitting the wrong shifter and dropping like six gears and fucking up. that wouldnt happen if you didnt have gears!
and then junu and i getting too far ahead of everyone after we left tangs and turning onto some side street near highland thinking thats how everyone was gonna go up cahuenga, waiting for a few minutes and not seeing anyone, then deciding to just go ahead and meet everyone at the top when they got there, and then riding the pass and seeing a bunch of blinkies in the distance thinking "theres no way they got ahead of us!" but sure enough they did.

It's easier, imo, to just switch out the cog. But then again, I have a flip-flop hub, so I just throw on the new cog. I don't like dealing with chain ring bolts. but it probably be better to switch down on the chainring if you don't want such a dramatic difference in the feel- changing the cog will bring you down to 76.2, changing the chainring will just take you down to 77.6.

problem:
chainsuck. stripped most of the outer layer about a dime size portion. the outer layer was cut in exactly 8 fibers, because thats what i peeled off with a magnifying glass. no structural integrity damage or spider cracks but the weave pattern on the carbon is clearly visible.

Depart 9:15 Sharp, take Chandler to Van Nuys, Van Nuys to Ventura. Meet Lee at Ventura & Sepulveda at 9:35 - 9:45. Head up Sepulveda over to Wilshire, get on San Vicente and head to the beach. After a stop to enjoy the sounds of waves crashing and other things ....we will head back on San Vicente to Sepulveda and back over the hill. On Ventura, the group turns right and Lee turns left. Down Ventura to Colfax (L) to Chandler (R). Back to start.
The climb is not difficult and we will regroup at the top.

great fucking ride. to all the people that got dropped at some point, i hope you found your way back. the route was simple enough and i warned you about the free for all when we got to ventura.

We can take a poll and shorten the ride by turning left on La Brea and go straight up to Cahuenga. That should reduce about 12-15 miles. We have done several 41-42 mile rides recently and they were fun and we got home at or before 12. Great weather too.

@danya that tube i gave you is already patched once, just in case you want to go ride it on a trainer or something silly like that. keep your pressure up you'll get fewer pinch flats and go faster.
and in a karmic stroke of genius, i of course got a pinch flat on the way home, so i was glad i carry 2 tubes.

How about riding up the backside of La Tuna. I've been doing this ride on my single speed, it's a good gradual climb until we hit La Tuna then its just a sprint to the top with the 5 mile coast down into the SFV

I wanna lead the second leg of my "life of Mitch" bike tour. Two weeks ago we rolled by my childhood neighborhood, my elementary and middle schools, the graveyard my grandma is buried in, and more. Leg 2 features my high school, a tour through the CSUN campus to show where I've had various classes, and tours of 3 previous employers + and my current office. Excitement!!!

Cahuenga Pass: We're riding a very short section of it on the east side where there's a big shoulder.
Outpost: We're not riding outpost. We're riding past outpost.
Mulholland: One of the least travelled famous road in all of LA. Most cars go OVER the hill, not ACROSS it! It see's a lot of bikes.

The Hollywood Blvd stretch was the most fun!
Getting lost on Nichols Canyon with nothing but myself, an LED light, trees, weird animal sounds, not a human or house in sight, and no sense of where I am going--not so fun. :-)
Well...actually it was kind of cool. Glad I did not end up at the apex of a hill in the middle of nowhere. I turned around 1/2way up thinking "this can't be right" and thankfully met up with James and those guys that went the wrong way.

Last ride was a lot of fun I think that might have been the fastest I've ever been on my bike! Passing cars like they were stopped!

I have three extra GOOD lights BICYKILLERS can use for the night. Two are bar mount lights, with one of them a frame battery mount and the other a water bottle mount, The Third light is a helmet mount that require a jersey pocket for the battery. Let me know if you need a light and I'll bring it.

Sepulveda Pass was burning yesterday- I can check if the fire's still going in a minute. They were pretty focused on controlling the fire though, since it was threatening the Getty and all the homes right there.
I'd say let's DEFINITELY redo the Do it in the Park route if we're scrapping this week's route anyways.

"Damn you seriously miss us by only a few minutes. We say we meet up at 9pm and leave at 9:15 but we really leave at 9:20-25. Last night was more of a 3 weeks pace, sorry. It was pretty brutal. Hurray for all the new people. But sorry for all the crap that happened last night, from shifters falling apart, headsets rattling, flats, cell phones falling out of pockets, people getting lost, and this one guy who find out his new bike didn't come with rim tape which caused the second flat of the night We had to use medical tape for rim tape! I rode right next to the fire yesterday. It was very cool to watch the firemen at work. It looked like it wasn't that big of a deal with the day being cool and the winds not very strong and indeed they controlled it quickly.
Anywho... I'm out for this week. I really need to lay in the sand and get my drink on at the Santa Monica Pier concert tonight. We went many times last Summer and I have to hit it at least a few times this year. I'll be thinking of ya'll. Don't tease Illy too much for wrecking his new bike.

Craig, you are correct, not the same route. It is actaully a good route for another night. However, Lee and I already made plans for this week which includes a stop at the hospital. We also made a decision NOT to post the routes.
Last weeks ride was Lee's choise becasue it was his last ride for a while. Lee also crashed in Griffith Park so we didnt do the usual 40+ that we are used to.

Ya know the more I think about it: even though we'll be a couple of blocks from where it happened we'll be 'insulated' from the neighborhood and in a smaller and faster group. After talking about it with someone who was there I think we'd be ok (so long as WE don't incite or road rage anyone) Just in case, I also found a way back from the Rose Bowl that bypasses most of the lights on Colorado and takes us to Los Feliz n Riverside.

hey guys. we got home ok.
Will was limping and in a decent amount of pain but otherwise ok.
I'll give you an update on how he feels today as soon as he calls me back.
All in all we were pretty lucky though.
Ilya and Ron, I should probably get you guys' cell phone numbers so that we can let you know what's up should something happen out on the ride.
I'll be looking for that idiot though.

Rico, do you have Will's number? Or the name of the LAPD officers that took the report?
Ilya just pointed out that there's a camera on the south side of the Sepulveda Blvd. tunnel, facing northward. You can see the camera on Google Maps streetview. It's in the center of the tunnel, hanging from a light pole outside the entrance, and there's a good chance we could get the car's license plate off of the video, if we act quickly.
I'm going to contact the LADOT to see if they operate that camera, but I want to notify the Westside LAPD detective who'll be reviewing the case today (per the responding officers).
All other riders - be on the LOOKOUT for a 1957-ish customized all- black Chevy (?) station wagon with chrome wheels and possibly a chopped (lowered) roof.

And may have had a chopped roof like this one
though the car's suspension wasn't as low as it is in the above image.
I've never had a car pass so close to me--I screamed "fucking shit" when it happened--and I watched the wagon heading north toward ricidiablo and Will and actually listened carefully to see if I could hear an impact (even though I was a quarter mile behind them). Now I realize he was trying to hit me. When I called the riders a mile a head of us, Ilya told me that the same car tried to hit him and caused him to swerve off the road.
This driver needs to be found and prosecuted before he kills a cyclist.

Fuck. Just heard back from the LADOT.
Unfortunately, LA's traffic cameras do not record any footage. They're used for live monitoring only.
Time for plan B: may have to swing by Bob's Big Boy's Cruise Night to see if this fucker shows up. He either hit Will's left pedal or handlebars so there should be some marks on the left side of his hotrod station wagon.

Ya this guy almost hit me to. I was looking over my shoulder expecting you guys to pass me, so I was able to serve out of the way at the last second. I figured he was just drunk. He passed me after the underpass that also has a camera. it was a black nomad with chrome rims and trim, actually pretty clean. It may of had blue and yellow california plates. It was running very rich as I had to hold my breath after he passed.
To bad for Will, he is a very acomplishied rider.

Not sure of the mileage, but probable around 40 or maybe a bit less. We should be back by 12Am and very local so there are few places to bail early if necessary. This is a new, really cool, fun and SAFE route.

Route for this week will be: Topanga Canyon Post Office out and back. We will take Chandler to Burbank to Ventura on the way there and Ventura sprint all the way back. Its just under 50, but a fast route. Will be back by 12!!

I dont think it matters which direction we go, the toxic smoke is everywhere. It is my suggestion that we cancel the ride for this week. I was hoping to do a longer route this week because of the last week of summer and the long weekend, but I think the air quality is very dangerous.
I will stop by the start in case people do show up, but I am not riding and recommend that others do not ride. I drive Mulholland every day and the layer of smoke that surrounds LA right now is thick.

Looks like the air quality and my injury are much better this week. The route for this week will be:
Heading west to avoid lingering smoke on the eastside of town. We will rde out to Topanga, climb up old Topanga and take that down to the post office and climb back up Topanga and come back by way of Ventura. Not sure yet which route we will take to Topanga yet. Im tired of Burbank so if anyone has a suggestion, lets hear it.
And hopefully there are more Bicykillers riders then Wofpack riders this week.

as we descended down griffith park through the car congested streets of pet shop boys fans at the greek, chain flys off.... could have been disaster.... thank god we were going around 10mph - after fixing the chain, we figured you guys left, so we completed the route only to find out that you guys we waiting for us, again! - thanks!

Well, when the dynamic duo come back we are fucked. Rich rode to Vegas and back so its going to be even faster.
We have had a few less people since the Sepulveda incident. The Newhall guys have not been back since.
Seems like alot of the regulars have been missing the ride the last 6 - 8 weeks. Lee, Frank, Ron, Mannuel.....so yes, the pace has been up and down.
Which way should we go tomorrow? I am thinkning La Tuna, Rose Bowl, DTLA back to NoHo. Maybe the Arroyo Seco bike path too if I can figure out that part of the ride again.

How about we do the backside of La Tuna, get to glenoaks and take that through Glendale up to verdugo or cañada blvd. past the college and cut in over Honolulu to la tuna and cut down to lakershim the rest of the way back. It's a gradual
climb untill the last 1/2 mile stretch at La tuna then it's 5 miles of downhill into the SFV. 1 speed or Fixie do-able. It's 33 or 35 miles, pretty fun ride.

dang, WTF? nobody showed. I road out from silverlake and got there at 9:15. I ended up talking to a new guy( who was there since 9:00) about how awesome bicykillers is.......when people show up! So i raced myself home for a total of 25 miles...it's just not the same alone.

Seems the turnout continues to be low as new people get discouraged.
My suggestion is that there are designated regroup spots for those
who feel it's unsafe to run the lights with traffic present or who
just plain get dropped.
I show up to ride in a group, as I can ride by myself anytime.

RIDER KILLED ON BICYKILLERS RIDE !
Sadly one of our friends was center punched in an intersection,
by a SUV traveling 50+ mph killed instantly !
Even though the motorist was speeding they had a green light.
Reports are that the cyclist followed the lead riders through the intersection
on the red. The lead riders escaped injury and kept going unaware that a
rider had been hit. Seems they were listing to there ipods.
Rider identification is pending as body parts where everywhere.
