The Nobel honor comes with a $1.4 million prize.
If any of you won the peace prize.. would you donate the prize money that comes with it or would you keep it? And would keeping it almost negate the accomplishment that earned you the award in the first place?

Aside from running local community centers and being involved in state and federal politics for a short time, I still think it's a little premature to award this guy anything of that magnitude.
Now if we gave it 20 more years and then seen how much farther(or shorter) Barry.O progressed, then the committee could've began making their final awarding decisions.

Ay. Obama's acceptance speech.
So painful.

While listening to his acceptance speech I would have been really impressed if he would have come out and said he could not accept it. Like Lee Duc Tho did when he didn't accept it and said "there is still no peace in my country". Pretty bold and idealistic especially after having your country (which was poor to begin with) brutalized by war for so many years. That money could have came in handy for the Vietnamese.
This just goes to show what the Nobel Peace prize really is.

I have to with-hold judgement on the big O and his war management.
He signed a deal with the devil to even be able to get the job of commanding the most powerful imperial army in the world. There is absolutely no way to do that job with out bloody hands. period.
I honestly have no fucking idea why we need to be in Afghanistan in the first place.
What I do know if if troops are being used to create any sort of stability in the region they need to be removed with caution.
If Obama just yanked all the troops out of iraq and Afghanistan and those countries went into complete chaos or had any substantial problems. Obama would lose the next election, and we would undoubtedly get a much bigger war monger in his stead.
The US is in 2 fucked up wars that should have never started and were both horribly mismanaged from day 1. So it makes sense to me, that its gonna take a minute for Obama to clean up the fucked up mess that the bush team left for us.
I think its right to criticize obama from a perspective of peace and progressiveness.
But to discount everything positive thing he has done or is trying to do because he isn't Noam Chomsky i think is a little silly.

As I mentioned some place else, getting a JD, then taking charge of some inner-city community organizations alone won't be enough to deal with the unique sets of difficulties that different factions across the world bring to the table.
The way I see it, myself not having voted for this guy has nothing to do with his race or political affiliation, it's just that his experience level isn't suited for this arena.
City Hall or County government maybe, but Barry O is out of his domain.
Oh well, he's already in there and he's got a few years left to get shit together enough to make some sort of impact.

Patrick. Maybe you should create the sign in "apologist for Obama"
Do you realize that when you justify the Presidents actions because it is supposedly out of his hands, you are complacent with his decisions. Your explaining away why he commands murderous acts actually makes it sound like it is alright that he is sending more troops into a war that we shouldn't be in and that there is no way we can win.
You say the man signed a deal with the devil. Well then he is obviously guilty of serving the devil, not us.
In Bolivia the people stood up to leaders that they didn't like and forced them to resign with weeks of coming into office. They had President after President until the people got someone that represented their interest. Now the country is better off. The people didn't make excuses of why this guy isn't serving their interest. We could do the same thing here. It starts with people talking about the issue and coming to consensus that the man is wrong for escalating these wars.

Why don't need to be in Afghanistan. The Taliban wouldn't play ball with us, in helping us build pipelines through their country. They wouldn' t let us set up IMF/World Bank loans to them to finance the project, so in end we could loot their country.
Our economic hitman didn't do the job. Our assassins couldn't get to the Taliban. So the next step is war.
Take a look at where all the US military bases are in Afghanistan, they are along the purposed pipelines mainly the Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan pipeline.
there is plenty of stories as to why we are in Afghanistan
There is plenty of Energy wealth in the Caspian sea.
It is also a geopolitical power move. Look at where it lies between Indian, Russia, China and Pakistan.
There is the obvious war profits to be made.
Then there is the opium that the Taliban mostly eliminated during their rule.
That dope money could fund many black budget project and the laundering of that money also helps prop up banks and stock markets.
This has been US policy from Clinton to Bush to Obama.
The US had plans to go into Afghanistan before 9/11.

To say that those countries couldn't work out who would be in power and take charge create order is the white mans western arrogance that people over there couldn't get it together. When we leave they will get together the best they can, despite the US leaving those lands radioactive. If we didn't have geopolitical/energy interest in those countries, we would be out in a heart beat.
Obama is not cleaning up any mess. He is continuing the US policy of those Devils that you said he made a deal with. Kerry and or Gore would have done the same.
What good has he done? Put us in massive debt by giving money to the banks, create the same policy to allow the super rich to keep on draining this country of everything. He is doing the same thing now for the medical insurance companies. He is trying to give them more of our wealth, by creating mandatory business for them.
All of that money given to Wall Street, the Banks and the Military Complex could have been used to build a country that we want. All of that money could have been used to create new infrastructure, education, generally making our country better off. Instead he is wasting our credit on bailing out the rich and trying to dominate the world.

Obama = Deja Vu
Next year he wont have Bush to blame. The blame game is typical of any presidency. You get this free pass to blame the prevous administration. When that excuse wears out, then you'll see the next phase....
Obama will either go down as the most over-hyped figure in history (though still a hero to many -- and rightly so).
I imagine it takes guts to run for president along with a ton of arrogance.
I just keep hoping as we progress into his presidency, he figures out how to make more difficult choices.
Its not that hard, i imagine, to say: Im not going to torture. Thats the difference? Our administration will obey the laws?
Oh, shut the fuck up already. We expect laws to be obeyed, and its sad this is a virtue, when thousands do this without bragging about it. A law abiding administration is strange enough; but we wanted an administration would make the really hard choices (as they obey the law).
MR, Ive given up any desire to torture people too (outside of my posts). Wow, that was easy. Why is it so important for Obama to praise his lack of condoning torture?
Time to either go back to work, and ride our bikes... ain't nothing going to change. Its gotta happen at the bottom, painting sharrows.

the world is much easier to understand in black & white / good & evil ... isn't it?
i could spend all day jacking you guys off and celebrating all the ways I agree with you. plus its always cooler to take a "down with the man" stance ... especially if "the man" is supposed to be slightly to the left. i need to brush up my anti-establishment image a little.
I know its not really popular, but I think life and politics is a little more nuanced than "war bad" "US bad" "obama bad".
I try to keep an open mind, listen to "moderate" news sources, as well as stay up with people who or more along my own world view ie . amy goodman & rachel maddow.
I think it great to hold Obama's feet to the fire in terms of doing the right thing. Especially in regards to his stated promises. There is a great deal of influence that common people can have in moving politics closer to the direction the general public would like to see.
but its going to take a minute to see how the real effects of Obama's leadership is going to play out.
Just as we are now living under recession and war and foreign occupation in the aftermath of Bush ... we will really have to wait and see what the some total of Obama's actions are before really making a judgement if his presidency was more good or more bad than any of the others in recent history.
In some aspects Obama is disappointingly similar to most of the US presidents in the last 40 years ... in other ways, he promises to be substantially better for the country as a whole, for the common people and for progressive people ... but government is slow and it is really going to take time to see how things turn out.
But if it makes you feel any better: WAR=BAD=BANKERS=BAD=OBAMA=BAD

self sufficiency would mean that bent would have to give up all his weapons and tanks and military toys dreams.... those technologies were invented by huge government funded programs involving scientists, psychologists, chemists, and a slew of extremely educated liberal people working on space agency programs and civilian infrastructure. basically everybody that the conservatives hate has led to every advancement that the military relies on. the military certainly DOES NOT by any stretch of the imagination rely on people to be self sufficient for it's advanced technologies. Technology requires decades of invention on an international and well funded scale.
self sufficient militias of small groups could never come up with any of that stuff on their own. they are basically consumers of products developed by the very nation states they lash out against.
