NYE - Black Label in the Big Easy
Thread started by Ms. Stephanie at 11.14.09 - 2:46 pm

Was anyone sad that there was no Bike Kill this year? Didn't get their punk rock freak bike fix? Getting the shakes for mayhem on bikes in a different city? Hoping you would see more broken bones, like that totally tasty broken ankle at Bike Kill last year?

Black Label Bike Club New Orleans is having a New Year's Eve party in - you guessed it, motherfuckers - New Orleans!

One of our fold who moved away (Reecy) and now lives in New Orleans sent me the following message. Read it and rejoice.

"OKAY! New Years Eve! I happened to randomly meet one of the guys ORGANIZING the damned Black Label party, and they said they are not only going through with it, but would LOVE it if the Ridazz came down. They aren't able to put anyone up, but they said they have a welder and would be happy to have y'all stop by and build freak bikes with them ahead of time. They'd also probably accompany us on a ride, if we organized one (they're a pretty loose association of bike punks)."

It's pretty fucking far to drive...I don't know if the van is an option? I looked at airfare a couple days ago and the cheapest roundtrip ticket I found was $375. What about a fucking Grayhound bus? I'll look.

Reecy can put up at least 5 people, maybe more if her roommates are out of town. I'm less worried about accommodations though.

web map services says 1895 miles 29 hours straight driving. I know from experience it is 24 hour to Dallas. I would think it would be more of a 36 hours drive.

1895/65 = 29 hours. I would think 7 hours of stopping refueling, eating shitting and pissing would be realistic.

Does Marcus and his insurance allow others to drive his van? Is Marcus into going to this and driving his van?

Can Reecy look for a place we could rent so that we would have some shelter?

Would anyone with a pickup truck be willing or interested in driving?

If Marcus drove his van, I might be able to talk Reverend Dak into driving his truck.

Maybe.

That's a serious maybe.

Re accommodations. I searched hostel in New Orleans and came up with a place that has up to 12 people in co-ed rooms for $17/night each. We could fill that room with Ridazz, potentially.

DREAM BIG PEOPLE! WE CAN FIGURE THIS OUT!!!!

@Miss Stephanie remember time in the van is the same as in a bus

Trying to figure out Amtrak. So far was able to find the NOL to San Antonia to LAX was $133 one way on the Sunset Limited train on return leaving New Orlenas on the 1.4.09. 46 hours.....not bad for train travel

Just got off the phone with AMTRAK

The Sunset Limited leave Los Angeles on Sunday, Wednesday and Fridays only.
2:55pm

It returns from New Orleans on Monday, Wednesday and Fridays only @ 11:55am

Right now they at least 20 seats available for $133 each way
$266 roundtrip. Bringing a bike is $5 extra each way and must be boxed,
They sell boxes for $15 or you can provide your own.
The agent said that is the lowest fair that they have available for this route.

I reserved a seat leaving sunday Dec 27 and returning Monday Jan 4

They will hold my reservation til midnight Nov 21..

If this sound like a good way of travel for you. Make your reservations sooner then later. Amtrak is like airlines the price will rise as it gets more filled up.
I do think driving would end up being cheaper and quicker, but what do I know.

My own experience on cross country Amtrak travel is that delays are the norm. Expect them to happen.

For Greyhound travel time is 39 -42 hours each way vs. 46+ hours on Amtrak

21 day advance purchase $215
14 day advance purchase $279
walk up purchase $310.25 these are all round trip

for one way tickets from Los Angeles
21 day advance purchase $110
14 day advance purchase $153
for walk up purchase $166

for one way tickets from New Orleans
21 day advance purchase $94
14 day advance purchase $126
for walk up purchase $143

Greyhound is faster and has more flexibility on times to travel
Yet is uncomfortable to sleep. Stops at pre-scribed fast food stops in which you can get out of the bus and walk around and they
treat you like you are less then a person.

Amtrak has less frequent times available for travel slower routes, delays.
yet it is more comfortable to sleep on, has a bar car and decent to good food
to purchase and you can walk around on the train, yet less time to actually get off the train and walk around. Amtrak employees treat you like a valued customer.
The train is also romantic.

Be warned, you will smell and feel like the train after 36 hours of being on it.
and the food doesn't something weird to your digestive track. You may get those "peek out poops". You want to go #2 but only a little bit will peek out your ass.

whoever is thinking train. Let get a go and return date confirmed.
The days I reserved means "9" days away from home . 4 on the train, 5 in New Orleans. That might be hard for people to get away from whatever responsibilities for those days? Make your train reservation ASAP (if you choose that form of transportation) to get the lowest fare. You have one week to decide on paying for it or not.

Ooh, rent THIS place!

http://neworleans.craigslist.org/sub/1466999002.html

It's listed under sublets/temp housing at $1400 a month. Looks big. Even if you kids only used it for a week, and there were 10 of you, that would come out to $140 per person for the trip. And it has TWO bathrooms. Good location, too, right near the French Quarter in the Marigny neighborhood, where all the starving artists (like me) live.

http://neworleans.craigslist.org/sub/1439541707.html

This place is about a 10-15 minute bike ride from the Quarter, it looks like, and has 2 bedrooms. Unfurnished, though. $1275 for a month but he's willing to rent it for shorter periods of time.

If it cost $15 for a hostel (backpacker dorm style) would you guys be down?

There is a hostel that looks fairly decent that has rooms that hold up to 12 people. They advertise $17 - $20 / night, but if I called and said we're a big group, I might be able to talk them lower.

Rev. Dak and have a possible lead on free floor space, but I don't know if it's going to work out. This is the hostel:

My Heart is not set on the train.
Actually the more I think about the more it scares me.
Two days on a train is a long time. I have taken Amtrak a few times and know that after 24hrs it get mundane, and everybody gets stinky.

I checked on sidestep.com and found the cheapest flights to be $364 (Delta) leaving either Dec. 28 or 29th and returning Jan 5th. Other dates start around $434.
This also means less time away from work or whatever your responsibilities are and possibly more time in New Orleans.

If you who wanted to ride the train are really looking forward to it and really want to travel that way, I'm willing to be a team player come along and bare it.

@Stephanie I like both of the housing options. I'm happy with whatever you choose.'
Just make sure that we can bring our bikes with us in the room(s) or that they have secure lock up for them. My only other thought about a hostel/dorm situation is that it would be better if we are the only occupants in the dorm and we can have a key to lock it up. I have heard too many horror stories of people things being stoled from them at hostels.

I'm really psyched about this. I missed so many trips and really looking forward to this one. I been wanting to get to New Orleans, this the perfect opportunity. This is going to be an epic experience.

a sleeper car for one person both ways is $1309
a sleeper car for two people round trip is $1575

I don't know how easy it is for people to go back and fourth between the coach and the sleeper cars.
You usually have the sleeper at the front of the train with the dinning cart next,
then the lounge/bar car, the the coach in the back.

You have to go through the lounge and then the dinning cart to get to the sleeper.
Who know how strict they will be, if the steward gets to know who is suppose to be on the sleeper or by yourself.

I have seen people spread out on the floor of the top of the lounge car/observation deck.
Sleeping in the middle of the night and the staff never says anything.

Sleeper car fare includes all meals and they have a shower for you down the hall.

If the train is not crowded it won't matter about sitting next to each other and will be easier to spread out and sleep on the seat next to ya.

also take into consideration that food if you buy three meals on the train will equal
$30-$40 per day.

Amtrak's Personal Food, Beverages and Medication Policy

You can bring your own food on board, but you could only consume alcohol if you are in a private sleeping car. I'm sure a bottle of hard liquor would be easier to sneak in the lounge car then beer would be. Beers cost $4.50 for domestic and $5.50 for premium.
They probably sell those little bottles, so bringing those would be easier to get away with.
If you where to sneak beer, bring the kind that they serve. So not to be obvious.

I think the train isn't too bad, RB. You're tall, but the train does have stops, so you can go outside for a few minutes, and also consider the fact that you can walk around the train. In a car you have to stop and pull over, find a route, traffic, etc, etc. The train can be fun and scenic and your bike is much safer. Also think about the fact that if you're driving you can't drink inside, like the train. Bake some special cookies and brownies and such.

There is a New Orleans chapter of Black Label called "Nowhere." They're pretty small, but last year there were oodles of folks who came down from Austin, NYC and Minneapolis, mainly. I had trouble finding people actually FROM New Orleans there.

This party was on par with the Austin Skidmarxx party in terms of insanity.I will organize a ride for us while you're here, if everyone's keen.

Also, I just looked at the area where our hostel is on google street view. Seedy. Very seedy. Looks like an abandoned church accross the street from an abandoned warehouse next to a vacant lot. Not sure where the hostel fits into all of that.

And by the way, I called the hostel back to ask if there is a place for us to keep/lock 15 bikes. There isn't room inside, but there is a narrow space on the side of the building where we could lock all of the bikes. There is a heavy metal door from the front of the property to the side area that LOOKS locked, but can't legally be kept locked because the side area is a fire escape.

But, I asked her if we could lock one or two bikes to the heavy metal door, and then lock all of the rest of the bikes to those bikes, and she said yes. Between me and Rev. Dak, we will have two u-locks and a cable lock. I think I'm okay with this arrangement. What do you guys think?

Ms. Stephanie, you need to look on the bright side. Seedy = easy access to hookers. Abandoned warehouse = squat space. Abandoned church = we can set up a temporary ministry of bicycle Jesus.

I am in no way turned off by seedy. Actually, you should go check out the street view for 1660 Annunciation St in New Orleans. It looks RAD. I just don't want anyone to freak out about their bike (or for anyone's bike to get stolen and for that person to blame my choice in hostel).

So. ARE YOU COMING?!

I read reviews of that place last night. More positives then negatives. Its about a fifteen minute walk from the happening part of town, but we have bikes so no biggie. The biggest complaint was that the bathrooms are really dirty, but I can take care of that with some gloves, some bleach cleaner, some rags and water.
I'am a little if'y about the lock-up situation, but I will go along with the masses. I would suggest to look more if you have the time Ms. Stephanie, just to see what is out there.? I would do the work looking, but I don't even know what to look for, I just know how to find the local holiday inn (and I did check that already)$99 per night two beds, and yes they have free breakfast, but that wouldn't be as fun as a hostel and more expensive,,,,so Forget about that!.

Speaking of bikes, who's been to New Orleans before? Whats the road's like. Do we need our road/racing bikes, or would he be better to bring beaters, for so many reason, a) low income/theft b) the roads will tear up our wheel, cause flats c.) will we be riding down dirt roads and want a bigger wheel?. I don't even know where we are going? I saw this gem on craigslist last night, I wish I knew I could trust the person and just buy it so it was there when I got there, I just trust people less and less to even consider it. Who knows if I could work something else where the person would hold it for me for one month?

@Roadblock. I checked into shipping bikes. It would be around fifty each way. You could probably get your friend who owns a bike shop to ship it for you for less expensive price to NOL (since they would have a commercial account) .

As for flying vs. train. I hate to be away from pops more then necessary, but I think we will be missing a [CORE] big and fun (possilby painful) part of this trip if we don't take the train. Plus your looking at another $100 for bike shiping. Delta airline is said to be something ridiculous like $175 to bring a bike. I don't know how true that as is, since I got the information on line from a company that ships bikes for $69. Plus I want to learn how to play D&D, and embarrass everybody when I beat them at Scrabble. Yes, Mr. Spelling here is very good at winning at Scrabble. Bring a dictionary!
We can all bring cereal, and almond milk, fruit for breakfast, sandwhich stuff for dinner and or lunch, and much snacks to avoid the cost of the food cart. You may want to eat on the dinning cart just for the experience.

Does hostel have a curfew that cuts off the latest time we can come in?

Not as much fun as a hostel, for sure, but if you cram 4 people in the room it's only $25 per night. Just sayin'.

"Speaking of bikes, who's been to New Orleans before? Whats the road's like. I've been living here for about a year now. The road conditions are terrible, I'll be honest. It's like off-roading. I HIGHLY recommend fat tires if you have the choice. There are no hills here, so your super-light little racing bike is more likely to do you harm than good if it meets with a man-eating pothole (of which the city is famous for).

And, that neighborhood the hostel is in is right near the projects and a soup kitchen, if it's where I think it is. I have had a bike stolen here already... though I did have it CHAINED up and not u-locked. No one has fucked with my bike since I bought a U-lock/cable combination.

BUT ON THE BRIGHT SIDE!! This is a small city, and AWESOME to bike around. It really is the best way to see New Orleans. I want to plan a ride for December 30 while you guys are here. SUPERDUPER FUCKING EXCITED!!

And that things that Ridazz love to do... y'know, drink cheap beer in public? That's LEGAL here... not to mention that there is no such things as "Biking While Intoxicated"... the Louisiana Supreme Court just ruled against it a couple of years ago. And an expensive beer in a bar here costs $4. And the bars NEVER HAVE TO CLOSE. God bless Louisiana.

I'll keep looking around at places. Like I said before, I found a bunch of corporate apartments, but nothing worthwhile yet. I don't think New Orleans is going to be quite like NYC where we could find apartments to rent for a week fairly easily.

I can cancel our hostel up to Dec. 27th, so I'll let you know if I find anything.

Before I dig around and possibly purchase train/airfare tickets tonight, can you confirm the departure (from L.A.) date/time and the departure (from LA) date/time?

I may not go to LA early because i should save all the money I can, so I don’t mind leaving with ridazz, but I must be back at my desk hopefully with teeth brushed and showered at 9am on Jan 4th

I just found out that I have a hook up with Marriott hotels and can get a corporate discount. This is another option to consider. We can book two suites and shove everyone inside then we won't have to worry about getting our bikes stolen.
Also found out that JetBlue is having a sale. I'm checking if they have a discount on flights L.A. to LA.

They have separate flights from L.A.>NY then NY>LA.
Long Beach/LAX to New York is $89 and New York to LA is $59.

I'm going to look into what the suites offer and exactly how much it'll be per person, etc. There's 9 hotels in the immediate New Orleans area and one hotel in Metairie. I've checked one hotel so far, and that hotel's suites did not have a kitchen.

Jet Blue is pretty awesome. Bikes cheap and they're really nice and the few times I've flown with them there's never been a problem.

Bicycles are accepted on domestic flights for a fee of $50 per bike each way and will count as one of your checked bags.

Crazy! I heard a while ago that it was super cheap, but that may have been their old fees?

It's totally up to the group - I can cancel the hostel up to December 27 or so.

I think I would stay with the hostel, though. It's the same price a night ($16), plus we get a free all you can eat pancake breakfast, plus (and this is the important part) I suspect the hostel would put up with our shenanigans a little more. Then again, from some of the stories I've heard (like Dingo's drunk ass passing out in the hotel hallway and then getting lost and not knowing anybody's real name to ask for the room number), hotels do put up with a lot.

Chynna,
Do you need to reserve the rooms by a given date? How many suites can you book at that rate?
It depends how many people end up going…
12 people in co-ed rooms in hostel
8 + people all over the place in hotel
I don’t really have a preference – I guess it would help to know how many beds are available at the hostel vs how many beds/sofas are available at the hotel. I don’t mind sleeping on the floor, but if I can avoid riding around with my huge ass sleeping bag in NOLA then that would be cool

Good point. The reason I like the hotel idea is because in the hotel we know that us and our bikes are safe. The free all you can eat breakfast can be pretty important though, and I would hate for the hotel to kick us out, whereas a hostel definitely might be better for shenanigans.

imachynna
responding to a comment by Ms. Stephanie
11.19.09 - 4:50 pm

Yes, I need to reserve the rooms by a given date. I think I can book 2, but it's possible I can only book one. After a certain period of time, the rates also go up, so that's something to consider. The two bedroom suite has two queen size beds and a couch, plus lots of floor space, I imagine, since there is a living room type area, etc.

I like the idea or renting a truck, never driving it. But using it like a locker for stuff and bikes.

As for Hostel vs Hotel, it's going to be the same. We end up just sleeping there, with a kitchen maybe_ eating there. I'm cool with either.

It's going to be SO MUCH FUN! ... Can't wait.

Just a suggestion - If you don't end up filling the van, perhaps PB could take out the last row of seats and we can use that space to stow bikes and people can pay something for him to do that. Perhaps if its just frames, we can all fit our bikes in there, and the rest of us can just take our wheels in our luggage if flying or taking a train there.

Think about it.

Just talked to Paul. Taking the Train-goers bikes is a definite possibility. Thing is, if we can only fill the van with 9, we would get a 12 person sized van as opposed to a 15. If that's the case, we would then look for someone in the community willing to lend us a trailer. We were also hoping to bring freak/tall bikes along = take up more space.

As for price to get your bike on... that has yet to be determined. Still working deets with Paul. Any thoughts?

If we can borrow a trailer we could definitely take the train/plane-goers bikes for roughly $25-35 depending on how many people want in.

Paul is also going to call the van dealership on Mon to make sure it has a hitch.

Whose trailer did Marcus borrow for Austin/PDX??

i think we should try to get in on the hotel deal. the hotel has lobbies, with bathrooms. that means 8-20 ridazz do not have to share ONE bathroom (one shower, yes but at least not one bathroom)
that means you dont have to worry about brushing your teeth after someone took a massive dump and have to think about the shit in your teeth. you know?

yeah but i'm guessing the hotel wont be so stoked when we start barging through their lobby with 20+ bikes. it'll probably be way less sketchy though.

I found a 5 bedroom house that's available. (There was a little discrepancy in the guy's email to me that I'm trying to clear up to make sure it's available all 6 nights, but I'm suspect it was just a typo on his part.)

$275/night. That comes out to about $18/night/person. I kinda think we should do it, gaise. There's going to be enough of us (i.e., at least 15) staying in this, right?

Here's the craigslist link:

http://neworleans.craigslist.org/vac/1462038287.html

I asked Reecy about the location etc. and this was her response:

DUDE, DO IT! The Bywater/Marigny is where all the artists live. WAY better neighborhood than that hostel you were looking at, a lot closer to my place and a more fun ride to the French Quarter on bike!

My thoughts on this is to try to get the guy on the phone and get a feel of him.

Are you having to produce a deposit or pre-pay for the rental. My fear is that he finds us all at his rental property kicks us all out after having been paid, and wenot getting our money back. This guy could be connected or a member of the local PD. Remember we are going to the deep south.

It is all fear talking, and fear says to take a pre-caution by checking him out by talking with him, and see if you think he would be cool with all of these people at his rental property. From the ad it sounds like it would be, but you can never be sure.

He may be superbusy to respond to you properly, or it may not be his property at all?

you can get the greyhound out of Austin 7:30pm to San Antonino 9pm which is $20
$15 if you pay 21 days in advance

the train leaves San Antonino at 11:50PM see schedule beware pdf file

the train is suppose to arrive at San Antonino at 9:30pm that means we have two hours at the station and related area.

so train folks it looks as if that is our longest stop. 2 hours (if it arrives on time) in San Antonino. We can stretch and restock on beer.

The only other stop with Maricopa, AZ 1:05am -1:50am enough time to grab some beers and stretch and say hi to Sheriff Joe "I"ll grab nap your ass if your brown and put you in pink underwear" Arpaio.

Welcome to your New Orlean's New Year's home: 738-740 Mazant St. (If you check out street view on google, move forward until you get to the corner, and the blue house on the left is it.) The rental agreement is signed and the deposit is paid.

I talked to Reecy yesterday, and she's planning a ride for us on the 30th, and she has already told the Black Label folks about it as well.

Just a suggestion from the renter of the last house we wrecked. Don't let people use ANYTHING in the house except the beds. Glasses, towels, furniture, etc. HIDE IT, and you'll save yourself a good bit of money. Also plan to clean the apartment the day before, you go. Please bring your own SOAP. Be ready to throw in for Toilet Paper too.

REMEMBER, the LIMIT of PEOPLE ALLOWED to stay in the house is TWELVE (12, 2-half-dozens, etc.) So we're stuffing it, so you have to be good. Or I'll slash your tires. We will have cover stories, a ruse of sorts, to mask our numbers, because... yes, we want to be able to stay there the whole time.

We're all hanging out, for LUNCH, or DINNER, or DRINKS, but (some of you) have a place to stay. Like Reecy's, or the Hostel down the street, or in your van. Etc. etc.

Thank you.

I'm not sure what's going on with the forum, but more often than not I can't read a bunch of the posts, I can only see a big black box and about halfway down and then no more posties. =(

I believe someone was asking about the distance of the hostel Ms Steph originally booked vs the distance to the house. The hostel is in a sketchy neighborhood on the other side of downtown. One of my housemates stayed there when she first got to town and said the hostel itself was nice, but the neighborhood isn't great. It would probably be a 30 minute bike ride from the hostel to the house.

I have room for a couple more housebroken Ridazz at my place. Email me if you're interested:

The "black box" problem seems to be a Firefox thing. Ever since the forum "upgrade," any thread over about 100 posts gets fucked up like that when I try to scroll down through the comments.

You can get around the problem either by clicking on the little red down-arrow at the top of the thread, which will take straight you to the bottom of the thread, or by increasing and then decreasing the text size (Ctrl.+ then Ctrl.-), which somehow fixes things. It's screwy, but it works.

We should figure out the van thing ASAP. Here's the van list as I understand it now:

1.
2. Coe coe ButtaaaA
3.
4. Nathan Snider
5. Coldcut
6. Graham (one way) Larsen (the other way)
7. Butterbits
8. Justin Adri
9. Imachynna
10. ANDROID
11. Rambod
12. Roadblock
13.
14.
15.

PB and Sheli are out. Who else is no longer coming (boooo), and who is definitely in (yay!)?

I still very much want to go, but I also want to make sure that I don't have to punk out at the last minute because things have gotten too expensive. If people are willing to drive cars down there, the price of gas would be about the same as the cost of renting the van. But of course cars are less fun than vans, and I don't know how many people are willing to subject their cars to that trip.

Also, here are the people from the house list who are supposed to be going in the van:

4. Coe Coe
11. imaChynna
12. Coldcut
14. Roadblock
17. Nathan
18. Rambod

Who from that list is definitely not going? Because, well... Ms. Stephanie needs to know.

Guys, the house is nonrefundable and I have paid $1575 for it. The more people that back out / can't get there because other people have backed out, the bigger problem that becomes.

So, we need 7 more ridazz for the van to become financially feasible? Is that where the 15 comes from? What about a smaller van? (And if you got a smaller van, would it still be able to tow the trailer?)

Also, if we don't get enough people to fill the big van, I'm wondering how much it would save in gas to ditch the trailer, take out a row of seats and bring the bikes inside. I'm sure the trailer adds a lot of weight and wind resistance, so it could save quite a bit to get rid of it. Or maybe not.

Joe Borfo

exactly! This is how I do it. I have a 12 passenger van, and I can fit 10 people AND 10 bikes without a trailer! ALL INSIDE! Seriously I've just about doubled my gas / person ratio!

1 - Ditch the benches in Rows 2 and 3. Lay down a futon mattress (you can borrow mine).
2 - Move Row 4 bench (the 4 seater) to position of Row 3, leaving a gap between it and the rear door.
3 - Remove all front wheels. Stack bikes alternating upside-down/rightside-up. Slip the front wheels into voids next to its corresponding bike. All 10 should fit perfectly with none on the top of the stack.
4 - Seating is as follows: 2 in front seats, 4 on the mattress, 4 on the bench.

BENEFITS
1 - This method HALFED the cost per person in my van, but mpg is a much more critical issue in older vans like mine. You'd definitely save though.
2 - Handling improves greatly sans trailer and lowered van weight center-of-gravity.
3 - People CAN LAY DOWN on the mattress. Important mostly for drivers.
4 - The space is much more open, since its almost a mini-living room arrangement, open in the center.
5 - More variety in seating. Lay down, driver/pass. seat, bench, sit up on mattress.

DOWNSIDE
1 - Its a little more cramped, but I dont think this matters when affordability is an issue. If you want to pay more, dump two people. OR the extra 3 feet of space of a 15 passenger van (vs my 12 pass) might solve this problem, supposing you use the same benching method.

Phew...Can I drink yet?

@chynna, How much each person pays for the house is completely dependent on how many people stay there. Taking into account the two people who have confirmed that they're not coming, and assuming that everyone else in the van makes it, the price would be just under $100 per person. (Fuck. I hadn't done the math before, that's fucking cheap.)

Assuming everyone in the van makes it, the current house list is below (we've lost Mrs. Borfo and Sheli). There are 6 people on that list that are coming in the van.

@ sheli, No, the van leaving on the 2nd that was not figured into the housing cost. That would lower each van person's cost by 30-ish dollars, and raise everybody else's. The way I would calculate it is divide $1575 by the number of days we have the house, and then divide that daily number by the number of people who stayed in the house each day.

A vehicle with a 30 gal gas tank is not going to get good milage.

i would guess roughly 15 mpg

If your vehicle averages 15 miles per gallon and has a 30 gallon tank, then you can go miles. 15mi x 30g = 450 miles.

Or to find out how many gallons you will need for the whole trip.
1894 divided by 15 = 126.26 gallons

Average U.S. Gas price is $2.629 x 126.26 = $331.93

I suck at math. Don't trust this.

ok that kind of math puts it back in the $150 range when rental is factored in... $2.63 a gallon? lets overestimate at $3/gallon just to be on the safe side.

we have to also consider that the gas mileage goes down with a fully loaded van.

@joe....you might want to ask Marcus to borrow the van personally, not on a thread.

For The Train Ridazz

I'm thinking of going down to Union Station tommorrow around 1pm to check out the train we are going on.

I wanted to see about electric outlets, to charge phones,mp3 players. etc..

I was thinking we should bring a cooler to store food and beverages in. I wanted to see what would be the best size to bring. Where we can store it. At the seats, or at the downstairs luggage area.
The menu says they sell Heniken, Corona, Samuel Adams and Bud, Bud light, Lite
on the train. The rules state you can't bring your own alcohol unless you are in first class.
Most of the discussion boards say they don't enforce the rule, but I thought it might be good planning to bring the beer they serve in the containers they serve it in.

Dak said that you can box your bike in anything on the train. I'm going to check tomorrow with the baggage people, so that there are no surprises. See if they have boxes available in stock if they are needed.
