hey guys
I'm building my first fixed gear bike and I really have no idea what to do for the rear wheel. I don't know if I should buy a wheel set, just one wheel, buy the parts and have it built. I have no knowledge of what parts are good and what's crap. I'm not using my bike for tricks, just commuting (i probably want a flip-flop hub).
If you had a budget of $150 what would you do?

You can check out the wheel sets over at www.bikeisland.com they're pretty cheap and its free shipping. Then you'll have to select a cog for it, do you know how many teeth you have on your crank?

Whatever it comes with.
Just google 700c track rear wheel and see what comes back in your price range.
Tree Fort Bikes has a rear wheel for $85 that looks fine.
I ordered a set of Weinmann DP-18s from shop.bellsbikeshop.com, and they've worked well for me. $168 for that wheelset is a pretty good deal, especially since LAB wanted $220 for pretty much the same thing.

Track Wheelset on eBay It's a tad more but shipping is free. (This is from the same shop JB recommended.)
I know ppl on the rides that like the weinmann's.. says its handbuilt. I don't know if you want the clean look of non machined sidewalls but if your gonna use breaks then get the machined ones. You can technically still break with the non machined though... but might get better grip w/ the machined.

Alex rims are cool but it depends on how good the builder is.. like tension and stuff. The CXP22's on the first link have good reviews. The weinmenn's look good. Most of the track hubs are Formula hubs and I think the velocity and formula hubs are the same too... which are both good cheap hubs.

thanks for the info. I think I'll get the Weinmann from Bell's Bike Shop because they say the hub can be adjusted to 130mm which I need for my fixie conversion, or can I do this to any hub?

nice... have fun putting it together... have some extra links for the chain... never know if your single speed chain won't be enough for your set up.

I haven't had that much experience w/ the Sun rims. But if you want a wheelset and you're tight on the budget... those sun rims that User1 recommended look pretty good.
I know it's tough.... so many decisions... machined or non machined? Should I get those cool white deep v's or should I go w/ the low pro black ones? Just take your time and don't rush into it.

Hey JB!
Bell's state the whole handmade stuff... but how the wheels holding up? Is this wheelset you bought from them on your fixie? Any truing recently? Or were they tensioned pretty well out of the box?

They came straight and well-tensioned out of the box, and I haven't had any problems with them, so it was a pretty quality build. (Keep in mind that if you buy handmade wheels, there are occasional scratches as part of the wheelbuilding process, since spoke ends are sharp and anodized aluminum scratches pretty easily, so if you want something absolutely perfect, you may have to do it yourself.)
But all in all, I've been REALLY pleased. They've held up to my weight and stayed true, which is really nice.
