On the LAPD watch list

Last night, we had one cop show up to our BMX ride to check it out to see is it was going to be a problem. There was only 9 of us so she left. The funny thing is she had a list of all the Tuesday night rides that day and the meet points, her commanders had each ride checked out for possible problems. The cop was nice and saw very quickly that we posed no threat, I just found it odd that they would even bother to see. I guess they found out about the ride via craigslist.
Just some fyi.
We're not doing anything wrong but alas we're being watched.

time for email blasts again? but i guess LAPD could set up fake email accounts and receive the meeting point.
I recall a 90210 episode, where they had to bring an egg to a store and get directions to a party.
Many, many years ago... thats sort of how undergrounds worked. you would get the meet point to get directions to the 5 other meet points to get the real directions
Or just post a bunch of fake rides and fake routes.
on the plus side, if you're in the "know", you get to join the real ride, and even more important, you get to know that you're in the know.

Wow. Was the ride on the MR calendar too?
Apparently things are going good for the LAPD! They have time and money to investigate and chase people on bicycles! Yay!

funny that underground parties were mentioned
there is an old website called ravelinks.com, police have been watching it since the 90's, sometimes people will still post an underground party on it, a lot of the time the police show up, the people that posted the party then are amazed with shock and awe that the police were so in the know...thing is, it's a public website, like this, it's public knowledge
i'm kind of surprised this hasn't been occurring with rides listed here much sooner

I'm not surprised they know about this site... Just surprised they have the resources to dedicate to such an innocent passtime when the LADOT regularly site lack of resources for such things as investigating hit and run crimes and writing reports on harassment.

It would be interesting to find out why the LAPD decided to do this, and who in the Police Department thought that this would be a good use of the scares resources that they have. What I have read is that historically LAPD is rarely pro-active unless it has something to do with something or someone politically. I know we are aren't and we for the most part are not political.

Damn. This probably why LACM and a few other rides are going underground. Only using email, twitter, etc to announce rides.

Why would you want to go underground? This implies illicit behavior which riding a bike with a group of friends is not. All rides should start at the new police station in downtown. Let them know we belong on the streets.

I mentioned this on the festival or rights thread. at the start of the ride there were 2 cops waiting for us and a whole lane actually openned up and waiting for us to get us through the route as quickly as possible. There is little doubt in my mind that this forum is being used by the police. Fast rides, however, won't obviously be followed, except by the occasional helicopter.

Come to think of it there was a cop waiting by the meet point on one of the 99cent Popeyes rides a few months back... and sure enough that same night they pulled everyone over when we came back. Like they were waiting for us.

Lets put Facebook to use. But 2 current cyclists will be needed to vouch for each person that wants to join in order to avoid cops joining in our fun.
Oh and if the LAPD is reading this: FUCK YOU!!

LAPD looking for an easy bust
If you were them wouldn't you rather spend your night detaining and arresting
cyclist, rather than going after real criminals who may shoot at you.

They should send a couple units to patrol the park by my house. I heard a kid there say a dirty word one time. Sounds like pretty good use of my tax dollars.
Funny how quick they are to detain cyclists riding legally, and how slow they are to respond to and investigate accidents involving downed cyclists... if they even show up at all.

A few months back cops were waiting at Tuesday Night Special starting point. 2 cop cars they were asking if this is a Midnightridazz ride we replyed no.But they ended up following us 3/4 of the ride even stop at 7 eleven with us and waited till we started to ride again then we finally lost them by crossing over a pedistrian bridge on the 118 freeway. They were cool to us at 7 eleven got out of there car and were bullshitting with us about bike riding can you believe they waited over 1 hour before the bike ride even started.TAX DOLLARS HARD AT WORK
