Was anyone sad that there was no Bike Kill this year? Didn't get their punk rock freak bike fix? Getting the shakes for mayhem on bikes in a different city? Hoping you would see more broken bones, like that totally tasty broken ankle at Bike Kill last year?
Black Label Bike Club New Orleans is having a New Year's Eve party in - you guessed it, motherfuckers - New Orleans!
One of our fold who moved away (Reecy) and now lives in New Orleans sent me the following message. Read it and rejoice.
"OKAY! New Years Eve! I happened to randomly meet one of the guys ORGANIZING the damned Black Label party, and they said they are not only going through with it, but would LOVE it if the Ridazz came down. They aren't able to put anyone up, but they said they have a welder and would be happy to have y'all stop by and build freak bikes with them ahead of time. They'd also probably accompany us on a ride, if we organized one (they're a pretty loose association of bike punks)."
START SAVING YOUR SCRATCH BECAUSE YOU DON'T WANT TO MISS
It's pretty fucking far to drive...I don't know if the van is an option? I looked at airfare a couple days ago and the cheapest roundtrip ticket I found was $375. What about a fucking Grayhound bus? I'll look.
Reecy can put up at least 5 people, maybe more if her roommates are out of town. I'm less worried about accommodations though.
web map services says 1895 miles 29 hours straight driving. I know from experience it is 24 hour to Dallas. I would think it would be more of a 36 hours drive.
1895/65 = 29 hours. I would think 7 hours of stopping refueling, eating shitting and pissing would be realistic.
Does Marcus and his insurance allow others to drive his van? Is Marcus into going to this and driving his van?
Can Reecy look for a place we could rent so that we would have some shelter?
Would anyone with a pickup truck be willing or interested in driving?

If Marcus drove his van, I might be able to talk Reverend Dak into driving his truck.
Maybe.
That's a serious maybe.
Re accommodations. I searched hostel in New Orleans and came up with a place that has up to 12 people in co-ed rooms for $17/night each. We could fill that room with Ridazz, potentially.
@Miss Stephanie remember time in the van is the same as in a bus
Trying to figure out Amtrak. So far was able to find the NOL to San Antonia to LAX was $133 one way on the Sunset Limited train on return leaving New Orlenas on the 1.4.09. 46 hours.....not bad for train travel
Don't gloss over this amazing offer: "they said they have a welder and would be happy to have y'all stop by and build freak bikes with them ahead of time."
The Sunset Limited leave Los Angeles on Sunday, Wednesday and Fridays only.
2:55pm
It returns from New Orleans on Monday, Wednesday and Fridays only @ 11:55am
Right now they at least 20 seats available for $133 each way
$266 roundtrip. Bringing a bike is $5 extra each way and must be boxed,
They sell boxes for $15 or you can provide your own.
The agent said that is the lowest fair that they have available for this route.
I reserved a seat leaving sunday Dec 27 and returning Monday Jan 4
They will hold my reservation til midnight Nov 21..
If this sound like a good way of travel for you. Make your reservations sooner then later. Amtrak is like airlines the price will rise as it gets more filled up.
I do think driving would end up being cheaper and quicker, but what do I know.
My own experience on cross country Amtrak travel is that delays are the norm. Expect them to happen.
For Greyhound travel time is 39 -42 hours each way vs. 46+ hours on Amtrak
21 day advance purchase $215
14 day advance purchase $279
walk up purchase $310.25 these are all round trip
for one way tickets from Los Angeles
21 day advance purchase $110
14 day advance purchase $153
for walk up purchase $166
for one way tickets from New Orleans
21 day advance purchase $94
14 day advance purchase $126
for walk up purchase $143
Greyhound is faster and has more flexibility on times to travel
Yet is uncomfortable to sleep. Stops at pre-scribed fast food stops in which you can get out of the bus and walk around and they
treat you like you are less then a person.
Amtrak has less frequent times available for travel slower routes, delays.
yet it is more comfortable to sleep on, has a bar car and decent to good food
to purchase and you can walk around on the train, yet less time to actually get off the train and walk around. Amtrak employees treat you like a valued customer.
The train is also romantic.
Be warned, you will smell and feel like the train after 36 hours of being on it.
and the food doesn't something weird to your digestive track. You may get those "peek out poops". You want to go #2 but only a little bit will peek out your ass.
Hey remember that guy who killed all those people on that Greyhound bus? Or was it Amtrak? I forgot, but I remember reading that he cut off some man's head.
whoever is thinking train. Let get a go and return date confirmed.
The days I reserved means "9" days away from home . 4 on the train, 5 in New Orleans. That might be hard for people to get away from whatever responsibilities for those days? Make your train reservation ASAP (if you choose that form of transportation) to get the lowest fare. You have one week to decide on paying for it or not.
Has there been any talk about when you guys would train it? I'm down to take the train too. I think a few peeps up here inPDX are interested in joining.
It's listed under sublets/temp housing at $1400 a month. Looks big. Even if you kids only used it for a week, and there were 10 of you, that would come out to $140 per person for the trip. And it has TWO bathrooms. Good location, too, right near the French Quarter in the Marigny neighborhood, where all the starving artists (like me) live.
This place is about a 10-15 minute bike ride from the Quarter, it looks like, and has 2 bedrooms. Unfurnished, though. $1275 for a month but he's willing to rent it for shorter periods of time.
Corporate Rental – Fully Furnished, Heated Pool !, outdoor gas grill, 1180 Sq ft, 2 BR, each with own tile baths w Jacuzzi tubs, fireplace, granite fully equipped kitchen, +snack bar. WIFI, cable, Ipod dock. Great private location, near all French Quarter Action, 3 blocks off Esplanade, fully renovated 2005, high ceilings, fans, beautifully furnished. Private Secure Parking available, safe area.
No van, I'm driving a car with Meow through Texas already. If you all chipped in *maybe* a rental car would work, and you could hit Austin, Marfa, Tuscon, Utah, meh.
If it cost $15 for a hostel (backpacker dorm style) would you guys be down?
There is a hostel that looks fairly decent that has rooms that hold up to 12 people. They advertise $17 - $20 / night, but if I called and said we're a big group, I might be able to talk them lower.
Rev. Dak and have a possible lead on free floor space, but I don't know if it's going to work out. This is the hostel:
Yes!!! cooking saving money travelling with Ridazz crussin and mobbin across the nation. I will always remember these times. These are the days. Stoked!

Can we do a fundraiser for this? Is that a good idea? Bad idea?
I know there's a lot of people, like me, who don't have enough $$ right now, but we could probably save some up with enough time.
I'm definitely confirming myself on here and would be down to pitch in for a rental car/ road trip it through other cities. What will be the deciding factor for you?
Chynna - Re fundraiser, if you can come up with something, due eet! I don't know a whole hell of a lot about fundraising. Maybe we could have a party somewhere and sells beers and drinks and show a couple of flicks for donations? I really, really want you guys to come!!!!!
Roadblock, this is the New Orleans chapter of Black Label, so they're already there. Don't know if other chapters come in for this party, or what.
Marcus, tell Skidmarxx about it! Let's get as many people there as we can! Frumble knows what's-his-name-the-jouster that's Black Label NYC, maybe I'll ask Frumble to email him to see if any of his peoples plan to head to New Orleans.
No van, it looks like. I don't feel like spearheading renting a car/van to drive, but if some of you want to make it happen, feel free. It's looking like Rev. Dak and I are going to train it with Sexy and Mook.
Graham, you can train it back (takes about 2 days) with us. Sexy gives all of the details above.
$15/night per person. I told her 12 - 15 people (looks like we're closer to 15), and she said no problem. They have a kitchen, and (drum roll please) FREE BREAKFAST IS INCLUDED.
My Heart is not set on the train.
Actually the more I think about the more it scares me.
Two days on a train is a long time. I have taken Amtrak a few times and know that after 24hrs it get mundane, and everybody gets stinky.
I checked on sidestep.com and found the cheapest flights to be $364 (Delta) leaving either Dec. 28 or 29th and returning Jan 5th. Other dates start around $434.
This also means less time away from work or whatever your responsibilities are and possibly more time in New Orleans.
If you who wanted to ride the train are really looking forward to it and really want to travel that way, I'm willing to be a team player come along and bare it.
@Stephanie I like both of the housing options. I'm happy with whatever you choose.'
Just make sure that we can bring our bikes with us in the room(s) or that they have secure lock up for them. My only other thought about a hostel/dorm situation is that it would be better if we are the only occupants in the dorm and we can have a key to lock it up. I have heard too many horror stories of people things being stoled from them at hostels.
I'm really psyched about this. I missed so many trips and really looking forward to this one. I been wanting to get to New Orleans, this the perfect opportunity. This is going to be an epic experience.
@Sexy I kinda just talked myself into the train thing. I say we do it. It will at least be you, me, Rev. Dak, Mook, and Roadblock. Although I've heard rumors about Roadlbocks ability to pass vast quantities of gas in confined spaces on road trips, I think we'll have fun. Either that or I'll start whining 8 hours in....
REALLY?!!?!?! Ridazz on trains??! You guys will totally have fun!!!!!!
Is there any way to guarantee that you'll be seated next to each other? I've found the viewing carts are usually crowded.. and the beer expensive(byob).

how much is the train? can we bring bikes on there free of charge? I know that airlines charge anywhere from $50 - $150 to bring bikes and they dont always handle with care.
It's around $10 to bring a bike on the train, if you have your own box. In my experience, it's $50 and up on the airplane.
I'm going to quote Pretty Cute re taking the train:
I've taken the train to New Orleans before.
I promise you that there will be some moments of "JESUS FUCKING GOD, ARE
WE STILL IN TEXAS???" but overall the scenery is great. Once you get to
NOLA and fall asleep your first night there, you will hear train whistles
in your head all night.
I think the fee for checking a bike is $5 but it must be boxed. I took my foldie on the train to Portland. Most of the staff said I should check it but I kindly referred to their policy on the website and stowed my bike with the luggage as permitted.
hey Stoney read the whole thread, I posted all that info at the top.
$266 is the lowest rt train ticket.
$5 each way to bring the bicycle. Must be in a box. Amtrak sells boxes for $15 each.
You can also pack it up and send it UPS.
Cheapest plane fare I found is $364 RT
Who like dominoes, who likes Tonk.
Lets bring fresh veggies, prunes , raisins with us, so to stay regular. We should see if Amtrak will allows us to bring a cooler as carry on to store beer and food. I'm serious when I say that the train food does to your digestive track just as codine does.

Portland trip by train was 29 hours and yes it gets quite long, but with fellow ridazz and games, distractions and general tom foolery I am sure it will be a fun trip.
On the way back from Portland to LAX I upgraded to a sleeper car which made it a quite nicer experience but exponentially more expensive.
Ah, you're being wimpy babies. Spending a few days in a train is not like spending a few months on a space ship, it's not that big of a deal. There will actually be stops, you can go outside and walk around. It's also BYOB (unofficially) and we can take over the bar car if we really get board.
Bring some cards, a couple books and relax for change.
It could be worst, like 20 hours in the airline system.
IM IN! IM IN! IM IN!!!!!! i'm going to try and coincide my train trip down there with the same date and time y'all arrive, then dibs on a seat in the vansion for the trip back.....also i don't know who all else is heading through austin but my birfdays january 6th and i'm thinking a week long party startin in orleans to celebrate new years and endin in austin to celebrate my life might be kind of necessary
I wouldn't want to smoke on the train. My pops was telling me about how some people got caught doing it and turned out to be a huge ordeal for them. Maybe you could just 'bake' something.
Graham responding to a comment by Roadblock

I don't know how easy it is for people to go back and fourth between the coach and the sleeper cars.
You usually have the sleeper at the front of the train with the dinning cart next,
then the lounge/bar car, the the coach in the back.
You have to go through the lounge and then the dinning cart to get to the sleeper.
Who know how strict they will be, if the steward gets to know who is suppose to be on the sleeper or by yourself.
I have seen people spread out on the floor of the top of the lounge car/observation deck.
Sleeping in the middle of the night and the staff never says anything.
Sleeper car fare includes all meals and they have a shower for you down the hall.
If the train is not crowded it won't matter about sitting next to each other and will be easier to spread out and sleep on the seat next to ya.

You can bring your own food on board, but you could only consume alcohol if you are in a private sleeping car. I'm sure a bottle of hard liquor would be easier to sneak in the lounge car then beer would be. Beers cost $4.50 for domestic and $5.50 for premium.
They probably sell those little bottles, so bringing those would be easier to get away with.
If you where to sneak beer, bring the kind that they serve. So not to be obvious.
It is a non-smoking train. In 92 I got caught smoking in the smoking car. I got a warning because the conductor said he didn't want to deal with the delay to stop and have me arrested at the next station. He said it is a federal offense also. Look at the schedule to see how long the stop are.
you could drive. Could your car make it. You could fit three other people and bike in that tank. What mileage do you get with all those people in it? 3900 miles round trip.
$364 rt and $50 both way to ups one of your bikes. Send it to the hostel or pick it up at the ups office and then send it back on your way out. You got two bikes. Just wrap and package it properly it will be ok.

I think someone (PC?) got their bike fucked up from shipping it? I'm concerned.... I think if it's southwest they sometimes let you get away with shipping the bike for $15.... bleh.
I think the train isn't too bad, RB. You're tall, but the train does have stops, so you can go outside for a few minutes, and also consider the fact that you can walk around the train. In a car you have to stop and pull over, find a route, traffic, etc, etc. The train can be fun and scenic and your bike is much safer. Also think about the fact that if you're driving you can't drink inside, like the train. Bake some special cookies and brownies and such.

Amtrak has way more leg room than a bus or a plane. I'm not as tall as you, but I'm taller than most, and I've never felt cramped on the train.
Also, regarding the alcohol policy, I've never had anyone hassle me for drinking a beer in one of the regular cars, though maybe different routes have different levels of enforcement.
There is a New Orleans chapter of Black Label called "Nowhere." They're pretty small, but last year there were oodles of folks who came down from Austin, NYC and Minneapolis, mainly. I had trouble finding people actually FROM New Orleans there.
This party was on par with the Austin Skidmarxx party in terms of insanity.I will organize a ride for us while you're here, if everyone's keen.
Also, I just looked at the area where our hostel is on google street view. Seedy. Very seedy. Looks like an abandoned church accross the street from an abandoned warehouse next to a vacant lot. Not sure where the hostel fits into all of that.
@train peeps - Brad and I took the train from nyc to la. Only about 1 of every 8 seats had a passenger, so there are plenty of empty ROWS to lay in. Never ever get a sleeping car. you'll have fun, it doesn't feel like a bus, its not weird to walk around trains like buses.
And by the way, I called the hostel back to ask if there is a place for us to keep/lock 15 bikes. There isn't room inside, but there is a narrow space on the side of the building where we could lock all of the bikes. There is a heavy metal door from the front of the property to the side area that LOOKS locked, but can't legally be kept locked because the side area is a fire escape.
But, I asked her if we could lock one or two bikes to the heavy metal door, and then lock all of the rest of the bikes to those bikes, and she said yes. Between me and Rev. Dak, we will have two u-locks and a cable lock. I think I'm okay with this arrangement. What do you guys think?
Ms. Stephanie, you need to look on the bright side. Seedy = easy access to hookers. Abandoned warehouse = squat space. Abandoned church = we can set up a temporary ministry of bicycle Jesus.

I am in no way turned off by seedy. Actually, you should go check out the street view for 1660 Annunciation St in New Orleans. It looks RAD. I just don't want anyone to freak out about their bike (or for anyone's bike to get stolen and for that person to blame my choice in hostel).
it doesnt look all that bad. I'm down.... wondering still about the bike situation. as you know, here in LA a lil bitch bike thief is omnipresent no matter the neighborhood status...

I guess I'm okay with it, since we can bike pile and lock and make it really obvious that we're all locked together, as deterrent just in case. But it's up to youz gais. If enough people are uncomfortable with the situation, I can look elsewhere for a place to stay. Wont' be as cheap, though, fo sho.
I read reviews of that place last night. More positives then negatives. Its about a fifteen minute walk from the happening part of town, but we have bikes so no biggie. The biggest complaint was that the bathrooms are really dirty, but I can take care of that with some gloves, some bleach cleaner, some rags and water.
I'am a little if'y about the lock-up situation, but I will go along with the masses. I would suggest to look more if you have the time Ms. Stephanie, just to see what is out there.? I would do the work looking, but I don't even know what to look for, I just know how to find the local holiday inn (and I did check that already)$99 per night two beds, and yes they have free breakfast, but that wouldn't be as fun as a hostel and more expensive,,,,so Forget about that!.
Speaking of bikes, who's been to New Orleans before? Whats the road's like. Do we need our road/racing bikes, or would he be better to bring beaters, for so many reason, a) low income/theft b) the roads will tear up our wheel, cause flats c.) will we be riding down dirt roads and want a bigger wheel?. I don't even know where we are going? I saw this gem on craigslist last night, I wish I knew I could trust the person and just buy it so it was there when I got there, I just trust people less and less to even consider it. Who knows if I could work something else where the person would hold it for me for one month?
@Roadblock. I checked into shipping bikes. It would be around fifty each way. You could probably get your friend who owns a bike shop to ship it for you for less expensive price to NOL (since they would have a commercial account) .
As for flying vs. train. I hate to be away from pops more then necessary, but I think we will be missing a [CORE] big and fun (possilby painful) part of this trip if we don't take the train. Plus your looking at another $100 for bike shiping. Delta airline is said to be something ridiculous like $175 to bring a bike. I don't know how true that as is, since I got the information on line from a company that ships bikes for $69. Plus I want to learn how to play D&D, and embarrass everybody when I beat them at Scrabble. Yes, Mr. Spelling here is very good at winning at Scrabble. Bring a dictionary!
We can all bring cereal, and almond milk, fruit for breakfast, sandwhich stuff for dinner and or lunch, and much snacks to avoid the cost of the food cart. You may want to eat on the dinning cart just for the experience.
Does hostel have a curfew that cuts off the latest time we can come in?

Not as much fun as a hostel, for sure, but if you cram 4 people in the room it's only $25 per night. Just sayin'.

I've been living here for about a year now. The road conditions are terrible, I'll be honest. It's like off-roading. I HIGHLY recommend fat tires if you have the choice. There are no hills here, so your super-light little racing bike is more likely to do you harm than good if it meets with a man-eating pothole (of which the city is famous for).
And, that neighborhood the hostel is in is right near the projects and a soup kitchen, if it's where I think it is. I have had a bike stolen here already... though I did have it CHAINED up and not u-locked. No one has fucked with my bike since I bought a U-lock/cable combination.
BUT ON THE BRIGHT SIDE!! This is a small city, and AWESOME to bike around. It really is the best way to see New Orleans. I want to plan a ride for December 30 while you guys are here. SUPERDUPER FUCKING EXCITED!!
And that things that Ridazz love to do... y'know, drink cheap beer in public? That's LEGAL here... not to mention that there is no such things as "Biking While Intoxicated"... the Louisiana Supreme Court just ruled against it a couple of years ago. And an expensive beer in a bar here costs $4. And the bars NEVER HAVE TO CLOSE. God bless Louisiana.

I'll keep looking around at places. Like I said before, I found a bunch of corporate apartments, but nothing worthwhile yet. I don't think New Orleans is going to be quite like NYC where we could find apartments to rent for a week fairly easily.
I can cancel our hostel up to Dec. 27th, so I'll let you know if I find anything.
As of this moment I was planning on leaving L.A. on Dec 25th arriving in LA on Dec 27th ia train and fucking around until ridazz showed up on the 29th
I have to return to L.A. on January 4th sooo I would have to fly back instead
Before I dig around and possibly purchase train/airfare tickets tonight, can you confirm the departure (from L.A.) date/time and the departure (from LA) date/time?
I may not go to LA early because i should save all the money I can, so I don’t mind leaving with ridazz, but I must be back at my desk hopefully with teeth brushed and showered at 9am on Jan 4th
Let me know…

I'm not into the tentative departure schedule at all. Nicki, with that time table, i hope you know we'd be spending less than a Day in New orleans. I'm not driving 30/40 hours to only spend 20 in the place we're going. thats ridiculous.
theres a reason why the train people leave on the 4th, because that at least gives them a reason to spend the money for the trip.
It's more than a day but you get what I'm saying. We'd be rushed there and back and with this kind of trip the core amount of adventure lies in experiencing the land inbetween the destinations, but we wouldn't have time for that at all.
Ridazz plus Zoobombers plus Dead Babies plus Nowhere plus Black Label plus New Orleans equals mind exploding eyeball melting tongue lashing heart stopping knee popping belly flopping to the 12th degree insane-happy-fun-times!!!
Sorry to have to change it up. After Sheli's calculations, it appears to make more sense to extend the VANGOYS stay a couple of days.
HERE ARE THE DEPARTURE DATES FOR THE VANGOY:
LEAVE LOS ANGELES: DEC.28TH (TIME TBA) *******************************
LEAVE NAWLINZ: JAN 4th (8AM-ISH) *********************
THE PRICE RIGHT NOW IS 150$ EACH, BUT THE MORE PEOPLE THAT JOIN IN, THE MORE LIKELY THE PRICE WILL LOWER.

Other than the hostel, here is the first place that has responded with availability (and I've emailed 42 zillion places): check out the Pork Tchoup House (the smaller of the two) - it's 1200 square feet.

I just found out that I have a hook up with Marriott hotels and can get a corporate discount. This is another option to consider. We can book two suites and shove everyone inside then we won't have to worry about getting our bikes stolen.
Also found out that JetBlue is having a sale. I'm checking if they have a discount on flights L.A. to LA.
imachynna responding to a comment by Ms. Stephanie
11.19.09 - 1:37 pm
I'm going to look into what the suites offer and exactly how much it'll be per person, etc. There's 9 hotels in the immediate New Orleans area and one hotel in Metairie. I've checked one hotel so far, and that hotel's suites did not have a kitchen.
Jet Blue is pretty awesome. Bikes cheap and they're really nice and the few times I've flown with them there's never been a problem.
Crazy! I heard a while ago that it was super cheap, but that may have been their old fees?
A one bedroom and a two bedroom suite with a kitchen are both $129 a night. That divided by 8 people is around 16 dollars, and with more people it's less.
It's totally up to the group - I can cancel the hostel up to December 27 or so.
I think I would stay with the hostel, though. It's the same price a night ($16), plus we get a free all you can eat pancake breakfast, plus (and this is the important part) I suspect the hostel would put up with our shenanigans a little more. Then again, from some of the stories I've heard (like Dingo's drunk ass passing out in the hotel hallway and then getting lost and not knowing anybody's real name to ask for the room number), hotels do put up with a lot.
Chynna,
Do you need to reserve the rooms by a given date? How many suites can you book at that rate?
It depends how many people end up going…
12 people in co-ed rooms in hostel
8 + people all over the place in hotel
I don’t really have a preference – I guess it would help to know how many beds are available at the hostel vs how many beds/sofas are available at the hotel. I don’t mind sleeping on the floor, but if I can avoid riding around with my huge ass sleeping bag in NOLA then that would be cool

Good point. The reason I like the hotel idea is because in the hotel we know that us and our bikes are safe. The free all you can eat breakfast can be pretty important though, and I would hate for the hotel to kick us out, whereas a hostel definitely might be better for shenanigans.
imachynna responding to a comment by Ms. Stephanie
11.19.09 - 4:50 pm
Yes, I need to reserve the rooms by a given date. I think I can book 2, but it's possible I can only book one. After a certain period of time, the rates also go up, so that's something to consider. The two bedroom suite has two queen size beds and a couch, plus lots of floor space, I imagine, since there is a living room type area, etc.

Just a suggestion - If you don't end up filling the van, perhaps PB could take out the last row of seats and we can use that space to stow bikes and people can pay something for him to do that. Perhaps if its just frames, we can all fit our bikes in there, and the rest of us can just take our wheels in our luggage if flying or taking a train there.
Just talked to Paul. Taking the Train-goers bikes is a definite possibility. Thing is, if we can only fill the van with 9, we would get a 12 person sized van as opposed to a 15. If that's the case, we would then look for someone in the community willing to lend us a trailer. We were also hoping to bring freak/tall bikes along = take up more space.
As for price to get your bike on... that has yet to be determined. Still working deets with Paul. Any thoughts?
Larsen, i'm going to make a giant assumption and say graham is probably only paying a one way fee for his seat, which means his seat which isnt his seat on the other way still needs to be paid for.
nicki just told me that her and paul are discussing leaving NOLA on the 2nd, in order to spend more time on the drive back / explore the hicktowns of texas/arizona/new mexico/etc. i am 100% down for this as long as they tell us what day we can expect to be back in LA.
i think we should try to get in on the hotel deal. the hotel has lobbies, with bathrooms. that means 8-20 ridazz do not have to share ONE bathroom (one shower, yes but at least not one bathroom)
that means you dont have to worry about brushing your teeth after someone took a massive dump and have to think about the shit in your teeth. you know?
I found a 5 bedroom house that's available. (There was a little discrepancy in the guy's email to me that I'm trying to clear up to make sure it's available all 6 nights, but I'm suspect it was just a typo on his part.)
$275/night. That comes out to about $18/night/person. I kinda think we should do it, gaise. There's going to be enough of us (i.e., at least 15) staying in this, right?
I asked Reecy about the location etc. and this was her response:
DUDE, DO IT! The Bywater/Marigny is where all the artists live. WAY better neighborhood than that hostel you were looking at, a lot closer to my place and a more fun ride to the French Quarter on bike!
i think thats nice about that is that it would be only us & we could bring our bikes in and out [ so we dont have to leave them outside ] and no one would care.
My thoughts on this is to try to get the guy on the phone and get a feel of him.
Are you having to produce a deposit or pre-pay for the rental. My fear is that he finds us all at his rental property kicks us all out after having been paid, and wenot getting our money back. This guy could be connected or a member of the local PD. Remember we are going to the deep south.
It is all fear talking, and fear says to take a pre-caution by checking him out by talking with him, and see if you think he would be cool with all of these people at his rental property. From the ad it sounds like it would be, but you can never be sure.
He may be superbusy to respond to you properly, or it may not be his property at all?
I don't know anything about a deposit, etc., but I asked in my last email. The ad says he's the owner of the house. If he asks for some crazy deposit, I might get a little more worried. (One place I contacted wanted 50% down, and when I asked what the cancellation policy was they responded, "Your deposit will be good for two years." Yeah, fuck off.)
lets make a ride post for this with all the schedules and info.... ms. stephanie would you like to post it? you seem to be the most organized about this.. I can help you make a flyer for it!
I was saying we should post it as a rde like we've done for all our other road trips. I will make a graphic for it unless someone else really wants to.

@ st. phanie: I REALLY want in on the house if you end up going with that option...or even the hotel.
@everyone on the train: I'm about to buy my ticket, and I want to attempt showing up at the same time as you guize, what date and time is everyone arriving?
im so stuper excited!!!! okay i have to go change pants i just premature ebikeulated!
so train folks it looks as if that is our longest stop. 2 hours (if it arrives on time) in San Antonino. We can stretch and restock on beer.
The only other stop with Maricopa, AZ 1:05am -1:50am enough time to grab some beers and stretch and say hi to Sheriff Joe "I"ll grab nap your ass if your brown and put you in pink underwear" Arpaio.
wait, so y'all will be arriving at the san antonio station on Monday, I'm assuming? If that's the case I can just meet up with y'all there and head straight to nawwlins....it would be nice for me to spend the day in san antonio anyhow, my mema lives there!
@widowmaker Of course we want you in on the house! It looks like we're going to have to cap it (sorry everybody) - but I'm going to talk to the owner on the phone tomorrow, and I'll post more details. I think the cap will be 15 people.
I'm considering capping the number of people in the house at 15. I have to pay a $350 security deposit (on top of the rental price) that will get returned to me once I return the keys IF the place is all in order.
@phanie: me too, and extra excited to see your face as well!! im definitely going to buy the train ticket and finish up the trip with you guys from san antonio. i just want to verify that your stop will be in san antonio on monday december 28th at 9:50. can't wait to see your shining (and by shining i mean covered in bike grease and booze) faces!
Welcome to your New Orlean's New Year's home: 738-740 Mazant St. (If you check out street view on google, move forward until you get to the corner, and the blue house on the left is it.) The rental agreement is signed and the deposit is paid.
I talked to Reecy yesterday, and she's planning a ride for us on the 30th, and she has already told the Black Label folks about it as well.
Oops, forgot me. Seriously, though EMAIL ME DIRECTLY about the house. I might miss you posting here, and I'm going to remind everybody in the email that they are responsible for helping me pay whatever part of the deposit I don't get back.
Just got my ticket, want in on the house (email to Ms. Stephanie sent!).
I'm not bringing a bike, will buy beater to turn into scraper when I get there (any leads on bikes appreciated! - I'll be arriving at 5pm on the 29th which doesn't leave much time for shopping before Reecy's ride).

Just a suggestion from the renter of the last house we wrecked. Don't let people use ANYTHING in the house except the beds. Glasses, towels, furniture, etc. HIDE IT, and you'll save yourself a good bit of money. Also plan to clean the apartment the day before, you go. We are filthy creatures we get dirt, hand prints, condoms and general detritus in the weirdest places.

Roadblock will supply all the gas you need in that van. You're gonna smell like his ass the whole way up there. I pity the foolz in that stink for 30+ hours.
Please bring your own SOAP. Be ready to throw in for Toilet Paper too.
REMEMBER, the LIMIT of PEOPLE ALLOWED to stay in the house is TWELVE (12, 2-half-dozens, etc.) So we're stuffing it, so you have to be good. Or I'll slash your tires. We will have cover stories, a ruse of sorts, to mask our numbers, because... yes, we want to be able to stay there the whole time.
We're all hanging out, for LUNCH, or DINNER, or DRINKS, but (some of you) have a place to stay. Like Reecy's, or the Hostel down the street, or in your van. Etc. etc.
Speaking of the hostel, I'm going to cancel our reservation there tomorrow, so there will at least be 15 beds available. I'm not really sure where it is compared to where the house is, but I'm sure it won't be a problema meeting up, etc.
I'm not sure what's going on with the forum, but more often than not I can't read a bunch of the posts, I can only see a big black box and about halfway down and then no more posties. =(
I believe someone was asking about the distance of the hostel Ms Steph originally booked vs the distance to the house. The hostel is in a sketchy neighborhood on the other side of downtown. One of my housemates stayed there when she first got to town and said the hostel itself was nice, but the neighborhood isn't great. It would probably be a 30 minute bike ride from the hostel to the house.
I have room for a couple more housebroken Ridazz at my place. Email me if you're interested:

The "black box" problem seems to be a Firefox thing. Ever since the forum "upgrade," any thread over about 100 posts gets fucked up like that when I try to scroll down through the comments.
You can get around the problem either by clicking on the little red down-arrow at the top of the thread, which will take straight you to the bottom of the thread, or by increasing and then decreasing the text size (Ctrl.+ then Ctrl.-), which somehow fixes things. It's screwy, but it works.
It rained last year at Bike Kill. But nobody really noticed because we were all drunk. And then we road around Brooklyn from our apartment to the Chicken Hut and back in the rain. And then I came home and got sick but it didn't matter because it was totally worth it. The end.
It appears that most of the "confirmed" van-goers have dropped out and cannot go anymore. As of right now, the van is reserved. The only way it will roll is if we have enough people to fill the seats/pay and have 3 drivers on the van insurance.
I want to van-it.
Most of the confirmed people have dropped out? Wow. If we have enough people to keep it cheap, I'm still in. If it's more than $150/person, I'll probably have to bow out.
Are any of the confirmed vangoers in the house (other than Sheli, she kindly emailed me and notified me, thank you Sheli)? Because, well...I need to know.
PB and Sheli are out. Who else is no longer coming (boooo), and who is definitely in (yay!)?
I still very much want to go, but I also want to make sure that I don't have to punk out at the last minute because things have gotten too expensive. If people are willing to drive cars down there, the price of gas would be about the same as the cost of renting the van. But of course cars are less fun than vans, and I don't know how many people are willing to subject their cars to that trip.
Also, here are the people from the house list who are supposed to be going in the van:
Well, I still really want to go. In fact, I want to go so much, I am trying to organize a garage sale with Ms. Stephanie so I can sell my life away and pay for this trip. If I can't collect all the money by the end of the month with Coldcut, we're probably gonna have to drop out too. But like I said, we're gonna sell some shit, so hopefully it all works out.
Aw Julia, you are sweet and underrated. Thank you. I don't have a paypal account, and would feel wrong accepting money, but I will make sure to see you in New Orleans. Don't worry about my toes, I've got ten. ;)
Guys, the house is nonrefundable and I have paid $1575 for it. The more people that back out / can't get there because other people have backed out, the bigger problem that becomes.
So, we need 7 more ridazz for the van to become financially feasible? Is that where the 15 comes from? What about a smaller van? (And if you got a smaller van, would it still be able to tow the trailer?)
After talking with PB we can get a van with 12 people. Come on peeps hop on board. Anyone know how much train tickets are now? Someone have a car they want to cram 5 riders in if the van doesnt work?
Man. It's still very very possible. IT'S RESERVED! We just need more peeps who will confirm to go!!!! If not,
ATTN TINYCITIES: COULD WE BORROW YOUR DIESEL JETTA FOR THE WEEK???
Also, if we don't get enough people to fill the big van, I'm wondering how much it would save in gas to ditch the trailer, take out a row of seats and bring the bikes inside. I'm sure the trailer adds a lot of weight and wind resistance, so it could save quite a bit to get rid of it. Or maybe not.
exactly! This is how I do it. I have a 12 passenger van, and I can fit 10 people AND 10 bikes without a trailer! ALL INSIDE! Seriously I've just about doubled my gas / person ratio!
1 - Ditch the benches in Rows 2 and 3. Lay down a futon mattress (you can borrow mine).
2 - Move Row 4 bench (the 4 seater) to position of Row 3, leaving a gap between it and the rear door.
3 - Remove all front wheels. Stack bikes alternating upside-down/rightside-up. Slip the front wheels into voids next to its corresponding bike. All 10 should fit perfectly with none on the top of the stack.
4 - Seating is as follows: 2 in front seats, 4 on the mattress, 4 on the bench.
BENEFITS
1 - This method HALFED the cost per person in my van, but mpg is a much more critical issue in older vans like mine. You'd definitely save though.
2 - Handling improves greatly sans trailer and lowered van weight center-of-gravity.
3 - People CAN LAY DOWN on the mattress. Important mostly for drivers.
4 - The space is much more open, since its almost a mini-living room arrangement, open in the center.
5 - More variety in seating. Lay down, driver/pass. seat, bench, sit up on mattress.
DOWNSIDE
1 - Its a little more cramped, but I dont think this matters when affordability is an issue. If you want to pay more, dump two people. OR the extra 3 feet of space of a 15 passenger van (vs my 12 pass) might solve this problem, supposing you use the same benching method.
Phew...Can I drink yet?

I willing to drive. Ask Marcus I can shave 3-5 hours off the trip each way... hahah
I also have a trailer that will hold in my estimation 20 bikes. To subsidize the van expenses i say we offer people who are flying or however you are getting there a transport of their bike for $25 each way. You don't need to pack the bike in a box.
We gotta get this van trip happening. We should stop off and sight see the grand canyon and.... Texas?!
C'mon people this is goin to be epic.

just read this.... The major major downside is that it's a rolling death machine to have people unsecured without seatbelts. I don't want to be one of those stories on the news. We should play it safe. Sure it will save on gas, but let's not under value our lives yo. My trailer is good to go and if we pack VERY light we can save on gas.

Its true. On the debately-dangerous flip side, it does improve handling though, much better handling and lower center of gravity. I promise. Its a tradeoff though.
If you guys fit 2 more, you can get 10 thats enough for a 12 passenger.
I can have my bike transported both ways if it helps everyone get to New Orleans, but I only need the bike transported for the return flight back to LA.
THIS MUST HAPPEN!!!!! I mean, it'd be awesome and I hope hope hope it does.
We just need more people. So far Roadblock, Rambod and recently, Snook, have volunteered to drive (missing anyone?)
WE JUST NEED RIDAZZZZZZZ TO HOP ON THE BUS! (and give us prior notice)
@chynna, How much each person pays for the house is completely dependent on how many people stay there. Taking into account the two people who have confirmed that they're not coming, and assuming that everyone else in the van makes it, the price would be just under $100 per person. (Fuck. I hadn't done the math before, that's fucking cheap.)
Assuming everyone in the van makes it, the current house list is below (we've lost Mrs. Borfo and Sheli). There are 6 people on that list that are coming in the van.
Oh my ghod, you big fucking baby. I wasn't really going to rub your leg on the train. Maybe...maaaaaybe I would have looked at you while you were asleep and jerked off a little, but you wouldn't even have known about this. It would be like it didn't happen.

@indigis, There is still space in the van. I'm not going in the van, I'm going by train. (I believe the train ticket prices have skyrocketed the closer we get to the holidays). The van IF it goes - this is what we're trying to work out because some people have backed out - will leave the morning of December 26.
If you put your name on the van list, it will help!

i'm done selling myself now. seriously though. if people buy posters i WILL DELIVER THEM TO YOU. fund me going to NO. :(
i also have some of those Los Angeles track bike spoke cards / handprinted cards if anyone wants one of those..
@ sheli, No, the van leaving on the 2nd that was not figured into the housing cost. That would lower each van person's cost by 30-ish dollars, and raise everybody else's. The way I would calculate it is divide $1575 by the number of days we have the house, and then divide that daily number by the number of people who stayed in the house each day.
Um, I thought the van was leaving on the 28th. If it's leaving on the morning of the 26th, then I definitely can't go, since I'm not back in LA until the afternoon of the 27th.
the van was planning on leaving LA on the 28th from what i remember, hussle to NO, and then leave NO on the 2nd so that they would be able to mosey back to los angeles and "adventure" however, that was the plan when PB was in charge, i don't know if thats changed.
again, sorry for selling my soul, i want to spend nye with each one of you.
Van people, as you make your plans, can you post them here? How long everyone stays in New Orleans impacts the costs of the house, etc., and people are always asking me for updates.

I say $250 because of the dwindling amount of people who appear to be committed.... there are a lot of variables too mostly the amount of gas expenses....
I heard you got a plane ticket. Not that you told me. That you said it on here.
Why not return that ticket back to the airlines, and get in the van. Being that you are

ok that kind of math puts it back in the $150 range when rental is factored in... $2.63 a gallon? lets overestimate at $3/gallon just to be on the safe side.
we have to also consider that the gas mileage goes down with a fully loaded van.

I'm thinking of going down to Union Station tommorrow around 1pm to check out the train we are going on.
I wanted to see about electric outlets, to charge phones,mp3 players. etc..
I was thinking we should bring a cooler to store food and beverages in. I wanted to see what would be the best size to bring. Where we can store it. At the seats, or at the downstairs luggage area.
The menu says they sell Heniken, Corona, Samuel Adams and Bud, Bud light, Lite
on the train. The rules state you can't bring your own alcohol unless you are in first class.
Most of the discussion boards say they don't enforce the rule, but I thought it might be good planning to bring the beer they serve in the containers they serve it in.
Dak said that you can box your bike in anything on the train. I'm going to check tomorrow with the baggage people, so that there are no surprises. See if they have boxes available in stock if they are needed.
Money is looking grim, sorry, I really wish I could make it. :(

start getting a little creative on this van thing.
Look for one of those services that have you drive cars across country.
See if you can rent some thing cheaper that will carry eight people.
Make this happen. Think of something.
The less people the less fun.
I always say the rides with the most people are the biggest blast.
This trip will be better with you are on it.
we have a separate email list going for te van. we have 5 confirmed and a possibly 2 on the fence. this is happening. we are probably gonna get a 7 seater
JOe if they don't have room on the van you might be able to check it in with someone on the train. I'm sure it will be less expensive then the airplane.
What do you know about blankets at the house. Should we bring sleeping bags? I don't own one. @Recey is there a big five or something comperable in NOL that is open til 8 or 9 to purchase one if I need it, or should I buy one here?
Just bring it to Nicole and my place at any time. Our backyard is hidden from view and greg and her usually just leave their bikes out there so u can leave it ont he porch or just let us know when youre coming and we will leave a door open for you.
by shipping you bike via van you are helping a marginalized group of riders get to NOLA
ok, thanks. I'll arrange dropping my folding bike off sometime this week. I'm more than happy to help more ridazz get to new orleans, and I need the bike transported anyway. I'm flying back to LA!

All house people, bring a sleeping bag and pillow or blankets and pillow. There are sheets and blankets for the beds in the house, but we have way more people than beds. Also, BRING A TOWEL.
What else? I feel like there was another lesson learned from New York...
Sexy-
I purchased a few extra sleeping bags for Ridge Way. They are not the warmest but you can come by and pick one up if you like. No one has complained or frozen to death using these sleeping bags but since you are a comfort whore you may be the first.
I plan on using one of these sleeping bags myself so I will be doing laundry soon. Please let me know (pref. via email)
Xoxo

PS when I say “come by and pick one up” please don’t take my horny slutty talk as an invitation to fuck.
Kakihara, would you like to maybe grab a coffee or something with Sexy some time? Like, maybe some time in the afternoon on a Saturday or something when you're free?
Toweliesbong -
Why can't I help out a fellow rida without it having to be, "Can we get some coffee or something"?
I ain't trying to hit on him.
If I was trying to get with Sexy I would throw him under my heels and pour whiskey down my throat.
Geez you are just so horny!

I wish Sexy would ask me out for coffee then throw me under his stilettos and pour whiskey down my throat
greg brad whatever your name is.... I totally would but that Krazy Penis guy you dated is still kinda sick in the head about you. He thinks he still own you. If he found out, I wouldn't want to suffer that wrath of vengeance. Plus I risk being meatballed to death by a girl in Bruins colors.
Kakihara no I won't bring vodka if I come to pick up that love quilt you offer to lend me.

From what I've experienced and from what I've read, the Sunset Limited is always late. Not nearly as bad as the Coast Starlight (affectionately known to its fans as the "Coast Starlate"), but you should assume about five hours.

I found a site that had percentage of arrival/late time for amtrak. The Sunset Limited was rated overall 89%. I have no idea what that means in reality.
Now I can't find the site. When and if I find it again, I will post it up here.

The two Sunset Limited train attendance I spoke with, both said that the train is pretty good on running on time. Who knows how truthful they where being?

I'M STILL NOT UNEXCITED EITHER! I WANT TO PLAY IN A CEMETERY AND DANCE TO A BRASS BAND AND RIDE MY BIKE THROUGH GREAT BIG MANSIONS AND DRINK CHICORY COFFEE AND YELL THE WORD PO BOY 100 TIMES AT THE TOP OF MY LUNGS!
WE'RE GOING TO HAVE MORE FUN THAN FAIRIES AT A UNICORN CONVENTION!!
I believe seating is first come-first serve, so if we want to sit in the same general area, we should check-in together, otherwise... it doesn't matter. I see us hanging out and getting drunk in the cafe-observation car.
so my train is arriving at the san antonio station the exact same time y'all will be arriving at the san antonio station! i will give y'all a call when i get there and hopefully can sit in the same car as you guys for the rest of the trip!
GUYS. It just hit me. Tonight sometime around 10pm Ramboner will pick up me and my bike and I will be off to New Orleans. A place I've always wanted to travel to. Now I get to go there with all of YOU. Yea I might be a little drunk on excitement but hell what can you expect with all this antissssssipation of love, crust and bikes(ex)?
if there is a non confirmed person on the van list who doesn't think they can go on this epic trip because of $100, i'd be happy to throw that in their bucket to make it happen for them.
OH, mims, might we ask you to restock out "fridge" with more beer? It must (or should) be beer that is sold on the train: Budwieser, Sam Adams, Sierra Nevada, Budlight, Coor-light, etc.
And, I can't wait.
fuck. 5 more hours until we're on a TRAIN TO NAWLINZz.
we are probably going to need ice too. If you can bring some with ya.
When we get to your stop, we our probably going to want to get out of the train car and run and around. We have a two hour lay over, thats if it arrives on time
