I'll start with the lowest hanging fruit. Only one thing that I would say makes a bit of difference. That is the Supreme Court appointments. Yes we would have been better without someone as bad as Roberts. Not that White House Lawyer sitting on the Supreme Court who justifies torture and long illegal detentions are anything for a fair justice supporter like myself is going to get excited about.

There isnt a ton of difference, they both are hardcore committed to the Capitalist party and they both have a business first approach to legislative agendas BUT there are some major differences which are based mostly on social issues like gay marriage / rights and the democrats lean more towards small business and worker rights than the republicans who lean socially conservative big business rights.

ideologically they have a different perspective on policy issues.... gun control, capital punishment, abortion, unions, welfare, environment issues, education issues, and so forth...
recently, democrats (Obama) wanted to extend unemployment benefits while republicans were saying no more.... Democrats (Obama) compromised and gave something to republicans... extending tax cuts which benefit everyone somewhat but the wealthy receive a lot more benefit from those tax cuts... now, unemployed individuals will have a little more time to stay up float, republicans said NO straight out.... this of course does not help the nation's deficit but some individuals will benefit from receiving unemployment benefits a little longer....
like stated above... the issue is that most politicians tend to vote and promote legislation which they feel will keep them in office longer....
