STONE BREWERY RIDE!?!
Thread started by SkeletonKey at 07.2.10 - 12:36 am

Hey all,

I was thinking it might be fun to ride to the Stone Brewery in Escondido; possibly during the 1st weekend in August, on that Saturday.

I've been wanting to do a long ride/adventure for some time now, and who doesn't love Stone brews? I'd love to get a few interested people to go together. Any one game for that? I'm open to suggestions on dates besides the first Saturday in August.

If you do not know, Stone has FREE BREWERY TOURS followed by beer tasting.

I'm anticipating we would augment our riding ability with Metro and Amtrak so we don't kill ourselves and can enjoy the fine brews and Stone.

reply

I am down to do this!
I toured the Anchor Steam Brewery in San Francisco, and there was unlimited "sampling" at the end. Best San Fran memory ever!

I did mention to you that Lance (from the Mosey) works there now, right? Not sure exactly what his position is, but he might be able hook up some behind-the-scenes action or something.

You did not mention that lance works there, but now that you mention that I think I knew that. He had tons of Stone beer at Salton Sea. If you have contact info, I'd love to see if we there is anything special we can arrange.

Some more info on the ride:
If we do DTLA to Stone all bikes: 112 miles
Which.....I don't think I want to do.

So. Blue Line to Long Beach, then bike to brewery: 89 miles

Or Blue Line to Long Beach
Bike to Oceanside
take Sprinter train to Escondido
Total Bike Miles: 62-ish

Return via Pacific Surfliner from Oceanside to Union Station (27 bucks one way, not too bad).

Those are the options we can decide on.

If we can get 10 people confirmed to ride, we can reserve a tour with Stone. Other than that, its first come first serve.

Well I'm definitely interested! I must be perfectly honest, I will not be in shape for 112 or 89 miles... even if you decide on the 62 mile route I will probably be a bit of a straggler. I have never ridden more than ~50 miles at a stretch and that was a real struggle for me. But I've been wanting to do this for a long time!

So I'll have to figure out if I think I'll be able to hang when you decide on a route.

Increase your average mileage slowly, ride everyday and build up to one or two 50 mile rides by late July.
You can ride yourself to fitness for this ride in a month.

I'm %100 attending this ride. When is it? I rode with Lance once from LB to Oceanside. Its a pretty fun ride. Along the way we did a "Tour de Pizza Port" stopping at every Pizza Port restaurant along the way for Beer and Carbs. Great Times everyone should do this ride. Its not that hard except the part where we had to take the shoulder of Interstate 5 past Camp Pendleton but that can be avoided if we take the ride through the base.

Hey!

While the DTLA messengers are putting on a ride to Stone at the end of August, I'm still going to host mine the 1st Saturday in August. I will do the short route (LB to Oceanside plus trains), so if you want to do the century+ you can ride with Downtown's Finest. I hope that's ecumenical.

i haven't done the ride before, but there's something about riding to oceanside, but not taking it all the way to the brewery that seems kind of disappointing.

anybody else down to do the full 89 from long beach?

tortuga_veloce
07.6.10 - 9:12 pm

reply

If more people want to go the whole way to Escondido, I'll adjust the ride. I set it at a lower mileage to attract more people/differentiate it from the DTLA messenger's ride.

Personally, I'd love to do the 89 miles. The only dowside is that its 69 miles of flat cycling followed by 20 of climbing; if we want to hit the brewery, I'm worried about time.

So, good people of the internet, what do you want to do? Will you be willing to start early and ride 89 miles?

having long and short options is good. most people can manage 60 miles, but doing 80 might be the difference between a "having a good time" ride and a "can't wait for this to be over" ride. that said, doing a century isn't too bad if one is prepared.

Hi! Haven’t been following this but I am very interested. Did you get in touch with Lance? I can give your email info to him and ask him to contact you hoping he is in town when we ride down there. Have you decided on a month/date yet? Taking Amtrak back should not be an issue. If for some reason it is packed, there are always later trains but I don’t think this is going to be a problem.

Check this: The Holy Stone Ride

We had six people, and Steph was the only one who'd ridden a century before. We got lost in Pendleton, so even those of us who met up in Long Beach ended up riding 115 miles, and we all made it just fine.

I HIGHLY recommend riding the entire distance, at least from Long Beach. It's a beautiful route, and that first sip of beer after 14 hours of riding was so very appreciated.

Also, if I remember correctly, the train back only ended up being $7/person. We got a group of 4 tickets, the family rate or something.

I'd love to do this ride again sometime, but I'll be in Poland that weekend. Let me know if anyone wants to put together another ride for late August/early September.

I'm digging it.

I could do either the shorter or the longer route. Last time I went on one of the rides Lance put on, we started out in Long Beach at 9:30 and got into Oceanside around 6, so we ended up just taking the Sprinter to the brewery. I don't think anybody ended up catching the train back that night, though. Some of us crashed at Lance's mom's place, and others had made separate arrangements.

What time is the last train back to LA, anyway?

To answer some questions:

I have been given Lance's contact info and I will shoot him an e-mail.

people seem split on the "Train or Not to Train" issue, so I think I'm going to update the ride to plan on riding the whole thing, but of course people can take the SPRINTER if they so choose.

The last train leaves Oceanside at 9:09 PM, but at 11 PM, Amtrak runs a bus we could also take.

I will inquire about train discounts....I would love to only pay 7 bucks.

I am also extremely jealous of traveling to Poland. The "downtown's finest" messengers are riding the full century in late August, you could check out there posts above.

Check out the updated ride info HERE

I think that if you get a 10-ride pass, you can use it for multiple people. The Amtrak site says they're $176 from Oceanside to Union Station. So it'll be $17.60/person if you have 10 people.

The deal with the train is that we took the Metrolink: http://www.metrolinktrains.com/fares/?id=3
We used the "Friend and Family 4-Pack." $29 for the weekend.

Thanks for the good intentions, but my teammates are the only 2 of "downtown's finest" that I really care to associate with. I'd be interested more Ridazz trips down that way, though.

Great photo post, tortuga!

Also, a few people have talked to me about just camping after the ride. While certainly not everyone will want or be able to, since its August I'd love to just crash in a sleeping bag under the stars. As we get closer to the day, I'll decide what i'm going to do, but I'm just putting that out there for all you other people.

Also, once we get closer to the date, I'd love to get a dedicated head count so we could possible get Amtrak discounts as discussed.

On a related note, this Saturday is the DONUTZZ ride, so do that to train for this ride.

I found this place online and it is about 6 miles from the brewery. I was gonna go online tomorrow a reserve a spot. $25 per site - 4 people Max per site.

My girlfriend plans on driving down that afternoon, so if you have camping gear (tent, sleeping bag) I am sure we could arrange to have it transported to the campsite.

the real question is who's going to get on that 10-ride discount. it has to be 10 rides exactly, no?

I think I am down for this with the assistance of Amtrak on the way down and meet you guys in Oceanside or Escondido. With my dismal performance on Donutzz 3 I think a short ride to the brewery is good for me.

Camping maybe? Thinking about it. Otherwise I can take the last train back.

60% sure I'll be doing this AND camping! ;) Still in the middle of moving... So maybe I should be focusing on that.

But I think I may be with Foldie on the sprinter train... Then again how bad can those hills be? ;)

Peep out our Facebook for info and RSVP as well as on Midnight Riddaz! Hope you guize have fun and be safe. Hint: It's faster and eazier to run through the 5 Freeway instead of running through Camp Pendleton.

I will gladly take your gas $$$

Tom- Last Brewery tour is at 7, so I'm aiming to get us there by 6 or earlier. Obviously, that means we'll be keeping a decent pace, but the good thing is that is entirely flat along the coast. For those who did donuts, it shouldn't be as long without so many stops.

Jeff- Did you ask Dixon about why the fee is 25 bucks? I'm going to call them and see if I can get a "bike discount" plus look into other options

To All-- The route from Oceanside to Escondido, while kind of hill, doesn't look too bad on Google terrain view. My plan is to take Oceanside Blvd out of Oceanside, which mirrors the sprinter train's route for a while, so if you guys attempt the last 20 miles and feel terrible, you can escape!

We will also be taking the 5.

the 10 ride discount will be for as many people who camp with me! That's why I put that little "head count" up a few posts above.

GET EXCITED!

John:

The $25 fee is for a campsite with a table and a charcoal grill. They have more expensive ones for RVs that have water and electric hook-ups, but $25 is cheap for peak season campgrounds. That comes out to less than $7 per person if you have four people in a campsite. Not bad for a campground that has restrooms and showers. State Campgrounds will run you $36 and private campgrounds will run about the same but who wants to hang out with a bunch of retired RV people?

I do know some state campgrounds have cheap walk-in or bike in campgrounds, but I didn't see any in San Diego.

I actually looked at camping along the coast and the closest camping to the brewery (SAN ELIJO SB) is totally booked. Same with San Onofre (no spots available for Saturday as of right now)

John, you have first dibs on staying in my campsite (no charge to you as you are leading this fine ride) , that leaves room for one more person (Tortuga, Bertha?)

If I hear nothing more by tomorrow, I will go ahead and make a reservation for one campsite. I don't mind reserving two -- as long as I know it will be used and I can get my money back.

Camping reservation made. It actually came out to $30. I have a good feeling that there will still be campsites available Saturday Night.

OK. so the START TIME is being pushed back.

In order to stop myself from worrying the whole ride about getting to the brewery in time for the last tour, we will start later, have a fun ride down the coast, and the enjoy beer at the brewery's restaurant/bar Saturday evening, camp overnight Sunday, and then return for the tour/tasting Sunday at noon.

RIDE still meets in Long Beach, but now at 9:30 AM instead of 7:30, leave by 10!

Remember, the meet time is 9:45 in Long Beach at the big plaza in front of the LB Performing Arts Center (one block south of the 1st Street Blue Line Station, at Long Beach Blvd and Ocean) leaving around 10 AM

If you are camping and want to not carry your sleeping bag with you, you can meet me a Jeff at CA Donuts #21 (the passage's meet spot) TONIGHT at 9:30 PM and Jeff's girlfriend will take your things in his car and bring them to the campsite.

Jeff's e-mail is posted above

I did the train, sprinter and bike less than a mile route. Shortest ride ever, but fun times with beerz and food. Sorry I didn't meet up with the crew rolling from LB, but wanted to get back to LA at a decent time so I rolled early.

Met some people that did the eagle rock ride a few months ago which was kinda cool.

I highly suggest a trip to the Stone Brewery.

Here is my route
