ups job recruiting
Thread started by Joe Borfo at 10.30.09 - 11:28 am

It's demeaning, back breaking work, and shitty pay. I did it once. It was kind of interesting for a while. In any case, I saw this and thought I'd post it if anyone was desperate for work.

wow only $8.50 hr. I remember back in the early 80's it was a sought after job because it paid a decent $8.00 hrs. 25years later and they only raised the starting pay .50!

It is tough, my brother was having nightmares about package coming at him when he did. He only lasted 4 days. He said the dust was unbearable. Dust mask if you are going to due it.

Yeah... the dust is bad. I remember the black snot. Summers were unbearable in the trailers.

In college I worked a summer at a UPS warehouse and it was by far the best (general labour) job I've had. Except it was $12/hour for the warehouse labour, and then they'd let me take home data entry work (entering information online) and paid me double-time for it.

Thank for the info. I know a few people who have been looking for a job for quite a while now.

was that in Canada aye? Did they have a different contract?

I suspect and I do not know for sure,,,,that the Teamster might have negotiated a contract where the new workers didn't get a higher pay scale.(I might be wrong about that, it just a theory) That has happened with many unions the past ten years. Supermarket workers and the most crazy of all is the MTA, they have like five different pay scales for drivers depending when you hired on.

Yeah, after a while they make you become a teamster. Even more money pinched for dues.

The job helped me pay for my girlfriend debts through some college, but no way is it going to help you support your family. If you hang tough for ten years, you can become a driver though. Whoopie!

It was in Canada, yeah...
I wan't on contract. In fact, I got the job through a temp agency. I worked for maybe 4 months, saved up a bunch of cash... and then spent it all a couple years later, moving my ass hither.

I inquired once about becoming a driver for their long-haul/overnight division.

Nope, not right away.
Labor work(didn't mind), 5-10 years driving the short-bus(the atypical brown vans), then they'd see about getting you over to a doubles position if you were lucky.

I'll just avoid the union hassle altogether and keep my CDL intact for a real OTR job.
Local driving is a pain in the holy rectum.

I worked for the Sylmar hub for a few months... worked Blue belt. Had buddies sorting who already knew the "cool" boxes from the rest (ie. the gum balls, the porno tapes, cell phones)

I remember making the best walls during the holiday season, two feet in front of the previous one so we could hurry up and just throw small packages back there. Then I got moved to unload and found out that making those walls was not the best idea.

Ahhh... UPS. Oh, and back then I was making $8.50-$9.00 (about 11 years ago).

I just realized Liz that at that time the Candian Lunie was about .75 to $1.00 USdollar.
So your wage made sense in regards to US workers.

Who was your supervisor back then when you did unloading? Cause... i was at the Sylmar hub working the day shift from 12pm-5pm. My sups name was Carlos I think. Had the crazy eyes. The worst part of unloading was bad rollers and stupid heavy ass cases of paper underneath the flaps. God, I hated cases of paper. But shiet... I lost weight doing that. At that point, I realized that I hated loaders cause of the bad walls. And the girls that did the high value packges had the most kick back job. Also the dude that drove the mini carts that hauled the stuff. LOL... loved the JC Penny boxes. Take that sorters!!!

My sup was a big filipino/samoan guy... i forget his name. And I worked the grave yard shift from 11pm-4 am. I loved packing computers... easiest boxes to make walls with and usually it was an entire 53' full of em. I never packed underneath the flaps with heavy stuff... that shit was just not right. Man, xmas times was nuts yo! And I got to ride the mini carts from time to time... takin big ass pieces to other belts throughout the hub.

After about a month or two I moved up to sorter and then also started doing unloading.

I remember one time... I seen this small box on a trailer and I thought to myself "oh this couldnt weigh much" but boy was I wrong. I bent at the waist to pick it up and fuck... almost threw my back out. Not only that but then that same box landed on my thumb and I had to go home... lost the nail and all. Turns out it was a box full of nuts and bolts and screws and what not.

All I know is.... don't send your stuff through UPS.

Granted, the pay is crappy at 8.50/hr. But also keep in mind you get FULL benefits even if you're part time.
