MR Feb Ride Official Thred
Thread started by seanbonner at 02.9.09 - 1:35 pm

MIDNIGHT RIDAZZ: TAKE THE FIFTH!!

Apparently this month is the 5th anniversary of Midnight Ridazz, someone had to do something godammit!

So the IAAL/MAF is taking off our glasses and pulling our noses out of our books (though we'll likely put our glasses back on so we can see) and have whipped up the greatest ride in the history of bicycles. Or at least in the history of MR 5th Anniversary rides. Or at least in the history of MR rides that will be happening the evening of Friday, Feb 13th, 2009. One of those for sure.

We'll meet at the Echo Park Boathouse at 9:30PM and ride at 10:00PM sharp! We'll head east from there, then west, then up then down and end back at the same place we started. Ride is 22 miles - somethings old, somethings new, somethings climby, somethings zoom and making a few pit stops at many MR favorites, you know, for the memories.

Bring warm clothes and spare tubes - No ridazz left behind but ridazz who come unprepared may freeze.

We're Librarians, Not Babysitters! Now hold your line!

We've got the route and we'll be making spokecards. Volunteers for help accepted!

I don't really understand the theme of this ride. Can you elaborate?

Graham
02.9.09 - 1:54 pm

Mr. Bonner has chosen to not incriminate himself and will refrain from answering any of your questions at this time about the ride's theme.

Any other questions?

one, two, three, four, FIF.

ruinedbyidiots
02.9.09 - 2:02 pm

reply

Certainly - the theme is rather unique nowadays, but we're bringing back because of the anniversary and all. The theme is "group bike riding"

1. Get on your bike.
2. Ride your bike.
3. Repeat steps 1 & 2 with friends.

I know it's crazy, but I think we can pull it off.

I don't usually criticize rides but I think this ride sounds extremely tasteless.

Come on, we can do better then this.

Your input about how I shouldn't have an input is a bad input! Now that word sounds weird.

Everyone should have an input, contributions are what make the final piece.

Look. If it were tasteless, we would have named it the cardboard ride, or the Nickelback ride or the filtered water ride or the Michael Jackson ride, but it's the ... I, uh, I've said too much. I decline to testify further on the advice of my attorney.

If you run across any cops on this ride and they start asking questions, you should actually "Take the Fifth" and see what their reaction is.

Now now, let's not be tooooo condemning of our boathouse-knowledge-deficient brethren -- unless it's Graham. If it's Graham I'm all for condemnation.

But for the restuvus, the attached image kindly and respectfully showcases the lake and its immediate surroundings. On its eastern bank you'll see a B, which indicates the location of the boathouse.

Now you know, idiots.

i am thinking of going, im a new, so
would a mountain bike be better for this or a road bike
considering the wet conditions

Icebreaker, I'll leave that to your discretion depending on what you feel most comfortable on in the given conditions.

If it is raining I may just resurrect my own long unridden semi-POS mountain bike with slicks for this ride. I hate getting my Brooks saddle wet; it just wasn't the same after getting soaked on The Heavy Metal II Ride.

Not to be a fence-sitter but I'd say what you ride should depend on what you feel most comfortable on. Fat tire or skinny tire doesn't matter so much as the confidence the bike inspires. Go with what you think will be the best for you.

FWIW, the pace is casual, the atmosphere laidback.

I second what Rollrz said, depends more on what you are comfortable on. There's an argument that fixed gear is better for wet situations because you can feel the loss of traction earlier, but it really boils down to what you think is best yourself. If it's super pouring I might bring the MTB myself, if it's only drizzling, I'll prolly go fixed.

Also, FWIW -while I've had a super good time on most MR rides, the rainy ones have been some of the most memorable.

RAINY RIDES FTW!

Looks like I'll be biking home in the wetstuff from Westchester to Silver Lake this late afternoon, so I'll be gathering all sorts of data to be crunched and presented via Powerpoint against the boathouse wall this evening at 9:27 p.m. Should be a hoot! In the meantime here's a pic of Rollerz and Sean Bonnery during the spokecardapalooza last night.

Looks like the rain will have mostly subsided by 10 p.m.

Some of my favorite rides have been when there was rain or threat of rain scaring away the weak at heart. Combine that with the absence of the Core Elite™ it looks like we are in for a really tight, super old skool, super fun ride.

Thanks to all who braved the cold for what was certainly the smallest second Friday ride in ages - 72 ridazz counted, I believe. I hope everybody had a good experience - you'll always be able to say you were there for the 5th Anniversary Ride.

An unexpected highlight for me was coming through the flower district on 8th street at about 11pm and having the air suddenly perfumed with the smell of Valentine's Day flowers!

Madmike, I'll add the pix I have up on Flickr later and post the link here. There was a photog from the LA Valley College Star newspaper who was going mad with the camera for a photo essay that he said will be appearing on the paper's website. Not sure when it'll go live, but here's the link:

Here's the timelapse of the "Take The Fifth" ride. Friday, February 13 from 10:15 p.m. to sometime shortly after midnight.
