Last night on the Tuesday Night Special ride I heard a sound that I will never forget. It was a guys head smacking on the road going downhill at 20+MPH without a helmet.
We all were speeding downhill Reseda Blvd (my bike speedometer hitting 40MPH) when I notice a guy on a fixie whose feet came unclipped. No brakes, no helmet and no way of regaining control of his bike.
He then attempted to slow down his bike by rubbing the tips of his shoes into the ground in a effort to slow down to avoid the busy intersection below. When his shoes fell off thats when I realized he had no way of stopping.
I pulled up near him and asked if he wanted to grab a hold of me and I would attempt to slow him down. He reached out his hand and grabbed my shirt but then his front tire turned 90 degrees to the right and lands head first onto the pavement.
We all stopped and told him not to move. A small pool of blood was on the ground from where he hit his head. He had road rash all over. He eventually got a ride to the hospital and I pray he is ok.
BOTTOM LINE:
I guess what I'm getting at is "Where a Helmet"

Should of corked the intersection so he can ride it through and slow down that way. Reaching to grab on to someone at that speed is not a very good idea. Well I hope this guy is ok.

Having a backup stopping option when your feet come unclipped / your chain breaks is not a bad thing.

I know it's not hip to have a brake or ride with a helmet and in my world view that is fine. Darwinism at it's best, but if you are riding with a group then your actions can effect others, so I think it is wise for everyone to have a brake.
I hope the guy is ok and wish no harm to anyone that goes brakeless.

I hope they guy is ok, Maybe people should chip in and get him a get well gift ( A front break and a helmet)

+1
Also generally when I lead a ride down big hills or through dangerous roads I STOP EVERYONE BEFORE and give them a warning / disclaimer about what kind of a shitstorm they can expect. So far no major accidents, and it's the fixed brakeless crew that I worry about on the downhills for sure.
TNS leaders- maybe next time you go down that hill make a quick prior announcement / warning for the brakeless riders. Especially if you don't know 'em, there's no telling how experienced / inexperienced they are on their bike.
THAT SAID: it should not be the responsibility of the ride leader to warn people or take responsibility for inexperienced ridazz, but as a safety precaution I think it's a good idea and good form as ride leader. Just sayin ;)
Safe riding, hopefully brakeless dude heals up fast and takes this as a learning experience.

if you're going fast, you should have a brake. if you don't want a brake you shouldnt ride fast.
i was once riding fixed with platforms and no cages (i usually wear spd's) and bombing a hill when my feet just flew off the platforms. that was scary as fuck, but i had a front brake, so i was able to stop. if i didnt have a brake, i'd either have to crash or take my luck rolling a red on santa monica and westwood.
i'm glad to hear he wasnt more seriously injured.

Never had any accidents like this, they've all been "rolls" related to sand-traps and cross-wind.
Yeah, but helmets and minimal breaking would've made this much less of a catastrophe.
And while we're on the subject of brakes, if you get a cheap mtb with disc brakes, take those things off.
The calipers stay locked up under pressure and will either kill you going down hill, or slow you down on the flats.

i disagree with the helmet first sentiment. there are many things i can think of that would have prevented this:
a brake
a properly maintained bike, with good foot retention
tightly laced shoes
tightly laced shoes properly applied into the rear wheel
a gloved hand onto the front wheel
learning how to spin fast on a downhill
dragging your soles along the pavement (not the toes)
bailing out by laying the bike down (avoiding head and shoulder injury maybe)
AND LASTLY GETTING A HELMET FOR WHEN YOU HIT THE GROUND.
there was something a long time ago on bikesnobnyc about how it's silly to wear a helmet if you're going to ride brakeless, and i tend to agree.
http://bikesnobnyc.blogspot.com/2008/01/hiding-in-plain-sight-why-cycling-is.html
the last line is: [they] "wind up lying on the ground under their brakeless bikes wondering why their helmet didn’t make them stop fast enough."

I'm glad no one else got hurt. Right now my left elbow sucks cause I got swerved into on a ride. Fortunately I had 1. Brakes 2. Gloves 3. A helmet. I can't imagine like, watching this situation unfold and not being able to do anything.
But I do need to learn how to roll out of falls and not stick my arm out to catch myself. I'm going to break it eventually and I can't keep road-rashin' my elbows.
I like wearing a helmet. It's a good excuse to never wash/do my hair.
And what exactly is the prejudice against brakes???

Watching him...I could not even think straight.
Now that I think about it trying to stop someone going out of control is just asking danger for yourself (epically that I was clipped in)
But for the life of me I was not going to let this kid ride himself into a four lane intersection. Better that he lay his bike down then than being abruptly stopped by a car!

First: I hope the guy is okay and heals up well.
Second: Instead of toes on the ground, which didn't help him at all, and only hurt him by taking off his shoes, he should have done a "New York stop/ skid," the kind where you put your foot on the rear wheel to help you slow down.
Anyway, despite all that, I'm sure that was a horrific sound.
imachynna07.29.09 - 2:12 pm

@mandingo
the gloved hand on the wheel method is dangerous for sure, so that's why it's a last resort. are you sure about being behind the fork? for one thing, on a lot of road bikes you can't even get your hand into that space, and for another if you grab too tight you will mash your hand into the fork and flip over with a broken hand. if you put it in front you should be able to let go if you have to.
@schwinner
you're right. you can't think about those things when you're flying out of control, but that's exactly the point of prevention. if he thought about these things before hand and practiced them a little bit he'd be in better shape. and given the situation he was in, i'm sure it was better for him to go down than to get hit by a car.

it may be dangerous to try to grab your front wheel at 40mph. another good way to stop while youre riding brakeless is to carry a cable lock, (like the kind that comes with many u-locks,) thread one end through the other like a lasso, then throw it around one of the foot-steps on a telephone pole. your forward momentum should launch you into the air to safety.

Hopefully you don't raise your kids to exhibit such behavior. Maybe they can teach you a thing or two about being polite, because you haven't proven anything in this thread besides the fact that you like to take cheapshots at people who have done nothing to disrespect you at all.
Some kind of example you are setting for your children acting like Hitler... I never once disrespected your family so talk all you want about "defending your brothers" because nobody ever accused them of anything, especially me.
It's going to take a lot more than a CYBER HUG and a beer, although I might just change my mind if I see you try- it's usually in my nature to make peace instead of war.
Sore topic, sorry folks.

remember when this thread used to be about that poor fellow who used his face to stop his bike, and how we could all commiserate with him, and learn something from him, and dare to hope that he will learn something from his ordeal. those were good times, good times indeed.

that's right. I remember that occasion. I walked up and you rudely failed to acknowledge me and I left, asking myself, "what's this guy's problem?" now i know: you're a spoiled brat whose only means of bonding with others is to complain. that my friend, is the definition of a bitch.

there are plenty of people who dislike me. what's your point? you don't have one.
Here's what a point should look like. Feel free to model yours after mine:
a. you're a rude prick.
b. you're an idiot who constantly contradicts himself.
i hope you're rude to the wrong person one day and get your ass kicked. i'm sure the only thing funnier than watching you not fight back would be listening to you try to justify your blind adherence to nonviolence while you nurse your wounds.

Now that's not very nice. These are words... albeit sometimes they can be quite incendiary... but nevertheless, it shows a sign of weakness when one has to resort to such tactics.
And I've met both of you, and both of you didn't rub the right way on the forums but turned out to be decent people in person. That being said, I would watch out what you wish on the other person as it might just come to pass (and worse) and you'll live with regret, all because of a few choice words you didn't agree with.

YOU watch it.... i will try and teach my daughter to be more polite, like you stated, but another lesson that i will teach her is to:LOOK AFTER HER PERSONAL EFFECTS"
dont come on the boards crying that you got stolen,, when in fact you did not pay attention to it...
again, i am happy to read that you benefited form the insurance company from your bag being "stolen". I SMELL FRAUD!!!! or were you just looking for the brown kids to blame? yeah i went there... what else could it be? tell me Jon..

im curious as to why Adrian got all butthurt over Jonny defending himself when Adrian is the one that brought up the bag in a thread about helmets and breaks? obviously, the dude has zero class, and apparently lacks a high school degree as well.
I love it when people come on the internet to drama up their lives because their actual lives are too boring. Go Spend time with your kid dude. I highly doubt she wants to remember her father as " the dumbass that spent too much time on the internet instead of playing with her outside. "
i also love sweeping accusasions. Now if i just bring up a holocaust reference, everything will be null and void to that brown reference.
Get over yourself.

After a year of being on this website, I can truthfully say I saw all of this coming.
Here's a recipe.
1) Thread is made about someone in an accident.
2) Thread becomes political
3) Two people get in an argument
4) Another two people get in an argument
5) The thread is spammed with a photo that has circulated the forum for a few days
6) More arguing
7) Add a few lurkers comments about the drama
8) I try to post something witty
Now let's all hope the kid who wished he had a brain bucket is okay and on a great road to recovery. You live and learn! (Or die) C'est la vie!
Good night everyone, I'll be here 'til Thursday.

I was riding today down balloona creek (dark) when a little baby dear pops out of nowehre causing me to slam on my brake and I just flipped over eating shit. I didnt even know they were around that area.
so anything can happen, if your an experienced rider or not.
