Harvey Hetland, (http://members.aceweb.com/n6mm/) loyal LAWheelmen member, excellent cyclist, Grand Tour rider, RAGBRAI rider, and friend of many has lost his life on a bike ride on Wednesday, 03/05/08 ...
He and his companion, Christie Edinger, were on their way home after riding up to Montrose with the Griffith Park group ... They rode up to La Tuna - and on the way down, on a curve with Christie behind him, Harvey was in the lane and was passed on his right by an automobile ... He was not hit by the car - but he lost control of his
bike and he "went down" ... The hospital personnel said "he didn't
make it" .....
So sudden - and so sad ...
His church, Westminster Presbyterian, is planning for a memorial
service for Harvey next week (626 794 7141) ...
The La Tuna Canyon homeowners group (www.latunacanyon.com) would like support for their efforts to make La Tuna safer with slower speeds and a marked bicycle lane. Your help would be appreciated by Harvey and all of his bicycling friends.
Harvey will be missed.

That is sad news. I was going to be adding La Tuna to my repertoire, I'll be contacting the homeowners group.

hmm, not hit, but lost control, sounds like the dude got buzzed.... that sucks majorly...
I know quoting song lyrics is kinda lame, but this song kinda states the way i feel about this kinda topic.

My condolence to his family and friends. From reading his site, he seemed like someone that loved bikes. Sad to see someone like that go.
I would like to know more about how this accident happened. If there's any info out there , please post.

Very sad, and especially unnecessary if it happened as a result of him being buzzed.
I was buzzed within a few inches by a motorcycle (of all vehicles!) this morning on my way to work - guy was passing traffic at speed on the right; completely stupid & wrong, but no way to catch up to him to give him a piece of my mind.

What's the optimal day for a memorial ride? I don't know the location, can we safely ride La Tuna at night?

I wouldn't ride it at night, it's twisty and the import racer types start jetting up and down it after the commuters are done.

La Tuna is an epic downhill, with long stretches of no or little development. Never done it at night, but can safely say, not a safe ride for night. I would say not even attempt it without some serious lighting gear. Longer but less step than what we did on the last Cubcamp week five, but road conditions are more spotty.

What a dreadful waste.
I'm looking at this guy's site and it turns out he was a big time radio geek in addition to being a cycling geek. Obviously I mean "geek" in the most laudatory way possible.
Check out his truck mounted QRP (low-power) ham radio station! Better yet, check out his truck mounted six meter station, with which he worked Canada and Alaska on frigging SSB with less than five watts! QRP DX on six meter sideband: it doesn't get any radio-geekier than that.
Look at these
portable HF dipoles he built. Pure utilitarian awesomeness. I doff my knit cap to this guy, and would do so even if he hadn't just been senselessly killed.
