go ahead palucha, show them the video.

Note how big the u lock is and how big the freaking car jack is. Not to mention, the guy gets to lay the u lock down on the ground.

My buddie just got his ulock that he lost the key to off the bike using a car jack. It was a big one with space and he ended up busting the jack in the process.

every lock is defeatable.
its just a matter of how easy, how quick, and how discreet.

mini's are trusted because its not very quick or discreet to defeat them but it is 100% possible.

Nina... So sorry to hear about your bike. Will keep my eyes peeled online and everywhere!!

Agree with rbi on the mini lock and car jack. Won't happen. Also agree with patrick that unfortunately... If the thief wants it he/she will get it.

Lucky for us there aren't many places to plug in tools in the street.

If the thief knows anything about lowrider cars they can find a specialized jack that only need 5" clearance that will work on mini u-locks I know this thats why I use a big heavy ass chain and lock u need time and a saw for that but it is heavy as all hell but I do feel safer

Where the fuck do all these stolen bikes end up?!? The bike world ain't that big. ebay, craigslist, sidewalk sale... My black cervelo was ripped off last month and I'm out gunning for who's ever caught riding it.

i usually lock up to parking meters since there are so few bike racks on the westside. there really isnt much room between the u-lock and the bike. i always imagined the easiest way to take one off would be to attach a chain and yank it off.

a parking meter top can be cut off with a pipe cutter in 5 minutes.
the new dot bike parking poles that are replacing some the meters seem like they are more solid.

that seems less likely to me. i used to have one that someone ripped out of the ground and dumped near my house. they had tried to saw the top off but gave up.

the tops to the "loading zone" signs can be popped off with a hammer in 2 seconds.

"seem" more solid - I took a look at those ladot parking poles the other day, and the thing is nut and bolted onto the old parking meter pole. You can still see the threads on the bolt! If people will go through the trouble they do to ripoff a bike, it won't take them any less effort to put a wrench to the pole and remove the whole thing. I've already written an email inquiring about that.. any info people have on it would be welcome. Maybe I'm just paranoid.

If you've ever had to trim some handlebars or a seat post you know that cutting a pipe is pretty effortless. I always keep that in mind when tying up to a meter.

I knew an artist that made a sculpture from a parking meter. He said it just took a few minutes to liberate it using a pipe cutter. The same job with a hacksaw would take at least 20-30 mins of hard word.

The loading zone signs are a joke.
You can take the top off with an allen wrench, it the bike is locked to frame only, it can be ridden away on.

And while the grinder is insanely noisy and throws sparks and smoke. It will burn through a u-lock in a few minutes. I've seen it done.

I can't vouch for how strong these are but i thought i recall them being solid. I'm not aware of the bolts you are talking about ... but they may be predominately attached some how.

It seems like if you locked through the loop it would be very difficult to lug that heavy ass pole + bike.

but who knows.

I hope they are permanently attached.. I've already written an email to the West District LADOT folks inquiring about it, and they've kindly forwarded it to the bicycling and transportation committee group. Waiting on them now for a response.

SO GREAT NEWS i found the bike and the guy who stole it. I was riding downtown after the art walk last thurs and I turned on to 6th from broadway and saw white bull horns and then stopped turned around got closer and it was her. i was by myself at 1030 night and had a bike with me already but i started screaming and almost foaming at the mouth .. "thats my fucking bike"!!! it says nina bike on it and the guy was like "no that s my bike " and i said hello no.. and other things i called a friend to come down who was close and then threaten to call the police. i called the detective i had on it. (you can do that by the way.. its free and part of the system your paying for)

long story short i was too jumpy to get his name and i was a bt scared and just wanted to get out of there with my bike. so hes still on the loose. i gave him a good scare but please watch out for a marron scion with plates that say
5HYP925
the car is also probably stolen.

thanks guys sooo much for keeping your eyes peeled and your concern. if any one needs help hunting some one down. ill help.

i wanna see palucha pick a double-sided cylindrical-tumbler lock like on a krypto mini. or anyone for that matter.

car jacks are definitely a myth, who has even 5" of clearance once their bike is locked up?

Air tools and electric grinders are probably the worst enemy, but i watched someone take off a shitty u-lock with a high-end electric tool and it still took a good 10 minutes of insanely obvious and obnoxious activity.

congrats on getting your bike back, nina!! good to hear that some of these "STOLEN" threads end up happily.

someone jacked your steel cervelo, craig?! super super bummed to hear that, i'll keep an eye out as well, those things aren't all that common!

i remember some time ago, the end of the year, or so when my friend derek in downtown had a white and red cannondale ulocked infront of the rosslynn and he had lost the key so we had to get it off... so sarah called dan and dan came over in the evening time and we cut his lock off directly infront of the rosslynn with an angle grinder on a busy night and noone said shit, just goes to show how easy it really is.
