that map is awesome
I've been dreaming of something like that
although it's way better than I imagined.
it should have bike deaths on their too, probably the only stat that would come close to not being underreported.

we should:
1) Find a volunteer hacker
2) Gain access to their interweb
3) Steal their codez
4) Re-appropriate their codez for LA
5) Add a ride calendar system using gmaps

I bet they would be willing to give up the code. I was thinking that it would be great if LACBC hosted it. Who ever hosts it would generate traffic and membership. It's a no brainer!

we could do a beta version of such a site to prove it viability
This SITE has a free mapping function where people can add markers.

I was thinking that if such a map had a group of moderators, it could allow any user to add a marker and for moderators to, edit and update markers/ info so that it is as accurate as possible.
But yeah it would be ideal to get their code and customize it for ppl who know about that shit.
Maybe some computer students trying to get class creditz.

I sent an email.... I doubt it in itself would generate traffic. People have to know about that it exists.... even if dude hosted it himself and just reskinned it for LA it would be a wonderful welcome.

that kind of thing isn't that hard to do-- it looks pretty much like it's what you end up with after going through an intro to the google maps API book. It just takes time....
If they'll share code it's probably reasonably easy to put up, even easier for someone with PHP experience (not me-- I've been doing perl and ruby and avoid PHP...).
There's probably also no reason the same site and database couldn't cover LA (and the rest of the country) except that they might have put some bounds on the distance from portland where they'll accept data for.

This would be great to be able to include the flip side to the ugliest roads, which would be the more desirable roads to take. Some really good possibilities can come from this. Even overlaying the ridazz map on this.

Hey guys,
We often get worked up on incidents we have on the road, but so far there hasn't been a site to document and catalog these problems.
I met a rida over the weekend that doing something about this. She is building a database of incidences through out the LA area. Her plans is to eventually take it national. This database, if used by ridazz through out the area could spot problem drivers.
For example if there was a collision with a rida, the database could reveal other incidents with this driver. This is valuable info for prosecution.
If there's a reliable database, it can be used by used by insurance companies to identify problem drivers. You can bet that at this point things would change in the treatment of bicyclists on the road!

I've asked Ele, who is running the site, to come on board and participate. We'll see what happens. She's a coder and maybe able to help around here. She is using all open source software to run her site.
What is most important is that you need to get the license plate number in order to have a valid report. Reports can even be entered via text messaging.
If there's a better site out there, please let us know.

This Portland centered site is at least national. I reported my collision from last December, and its the only report in Southern California. It's down there in my home town of Cypress.
Gee, L.A. must have the best, most bike friendly drivers in the world..Ha!

Anecdotal evidence/google maps are great for us, but if we're hoping to get the state interested in making things safe for cyclists, it would really help to get on THEIR database as well.
