Above are my picks for this Nov 08 Los Angeles County elections for judge.
I have spent the last week researching the candidates and looking over what they have to say there past experiences in coming to my conclusions as to who would be best to serve as Judge.
I encourage to look at the links provided I have used in my research to come to your own conclusion.
Of course if you don’t have the time or don’t want to make the effort you can use my picks as a guideline.
If you don’t have the time or want to make the effort and generally disagree with me on everything, you can use guide as your yardstick for who not to vote for.

Metropolitan News-Enterprise Online is where I started. There endorsements are the exact opposites of my picks. They do seem to lean toward supporting Prosecutors from the Los Angeles County District Attorneys office. Take note that DA’s do have the advantage with voters and make up 75% of the elected judges.

. Each Candidate is interviewed with the same questions for each candidate. Each video is approximately six minutes long. The Candidates each have a video of the candidates statement which are approximately one minute long. Click on the above link for the first candidate, then click on the tab "More From User" to select from all the other videos of the candidate in these races.

www.SmartVoter.org
and KCAL/KCBS
both have great informations on the candidates for these races. It includes bios and three questions posed to each candidate.

Los Angeles County Bar Association
has there own basic rating on each of the candidate.

If you care for the opinion of the Los Angeles Times. You can read it here.

Please note that this is a run off election from the primary elections. These are being taken place because no candidate took a majority vote to win in the primary. These candidates received the most votes in the primary but not enough for a majority. You will see endorsement of other candidates from other races. Those races have already been decided in the primary election.

Judge of Superior Coutn
Office No 72

Steven A. Simons

My choice for this seat Steven A. Simons is a "Consumers Right Attorney" in which 40% of his practice is devoted to suing auto dealers for fraud. The majority of his practice is general civil law. He does have experience with criminal, family and probate law. He has such a wide experience in so many aspect of law, this will give him a edge of preparedness for any area of the superior court. A graduate of CSUN and South Western Law. Simons has a working class background with jobs such as: pumping gas, installing car component, warehouse work, taxi driver, and GM plant worker in the Old Van Nuys plant. He has also served in the Navy. Simons is active in the community with his wife and two children. He served as former President (2003), Vice President (2002) and Tresure (2001-02) of Granada Hills Little League, President Granada Hills Elementary Parent Association (2002), Deacon and Moderator at Woodley Community Church (1990 to Present). He has also worked with Public Law Center (Orange County). Simons was inspired to practice law at 13 after reading F. Lee Bailey’s "The Defense Never Rests,"

Hilleri Grossman Mettitt does have a background that is troubling to me for a job requiring fairness. She has been a career prosecutor for 14 years. She was inspired to be a prosecutor at age 10 after hearing of a murder case in where the defendant was convicted of manslaughter, because of a Twinkie defense (poor nutrition). Consumption of junk food didn’t sound like much of an excuse for killing someone to young Hilleri Grossman. It was "beyond comprehension," she says now. She has no civil court experience (which she may most likely be appointed to) only prosecutorial experience. She is endorsed by Sheriff Bacca, which should be another red flag in her ability to be fair on the bench. She received her B.A. from UCLA and her J.D. from Loyola Law School. Her community involvement includes: Project L.E.A.D. teacher, Wonder of Reading tutor, and PTA involvement.

Judge of Superior Court
Office No. 82

Cynthia Loo

Cynthia Loo served as Superior Court Referee for 8 years, in which she was awarded L.A. County Juvenile Courts Bar Association 'Outstanding Judicial Officer in 2004. She has put forth hope and rehabilitation first in her job as Juvenile Superior Court Referee. Because of emotional outburst of crying while serving in her Referee position she has three times had her application for Commissionership turned down by appointing Judges. I find this fact a commendable quality. It shows that she has the ability to feel from the heart for the people with whom life she had control in deciding their fait. At the same time deciding what would be best for the defendant, she took into consideration if that individual would be a threat to society if released from custody. Although she was endorsed by Sheriff Baca, she does have commendable endorsements from such notable public officials such as Jackie Goldberg and Shelia Kuehl, along with organizations such as United Farm Workers and United Teachers of Los Angeles. If elected Loo will be the first elected Women Asian American to the bench.

Her opponent Thomas Rubinson has been a criminal prosecutor for 17 years. He has had some gnarly appointments in the DA's office. He focuses in on his experience as Hardcore Gang Division/Gang Murder cases.. He speaks of being fair to all who will enter his court room. In his interview with the League of Women Voter, he tells of a story where after he concluded a case in which "life with no parole" sentences for five gang members where handed out, he felt that something was a amiss. He stayed on the case investigating it, interviewing witness, after coming up with new information that found two of the defendant innocent, he forwarded the information to the defense attorney and judge in the case. As a result the two defendants where exonerated . Although Mr. Rubinson may make a fair and honest judge. I find his past experience vs. the quality of Loo’s character results in Cynthia Loo being a better candidate for the judgeship.

Judge of Superior Court
Office No 84

Pat Conolly

Doing the research for this pick really made me say WOW! Both have extension experience in the LA DA’s office. Both are rated UNQUALIFIED by the Los Angeles County Bar Association.

Pat Conolly is a son of famous former Los Angeles Boxer who like his father is said to be an "Outstanding Fighter" He said to be a hard fighter in court, but never hits below the belt. It is outside of the courtroom where his colleges label him ‘pugnacious’. He is also said to have a temper with his co-worker, and labeled as ‘NOT an all around good DA’ because of it. I experienced people with characteristic as Pat Connolly although they can be abrasive, they always end up being fair minded. He is endorsed by the standard group of local law and order types.

His opponent Lori-Ann C. Jones is also from the District Attorneys office, although she served the last two years as a Superior Court Commissioner in Ingelwood. She has had many problems as commissioner but claims that it is "a difficult transition to go from having the mindset of a prosecutor" to that of a jurist. The Public Defenders Office has had numerous complaints to the point where they refused to stipulate to her as a commissioner. The Judge Supervisors placed her in traffic court where she was known as "Jail Happy’’. She was noted by her actions to give jail time to defendants if they could not put up excessive bail. She would have the Sheriffs Department take into custody people who have violated their ‘probation terms’ by receiving a traffic ticket if they did not pay their complete fine on time. She was also know by the Public Defenders office to give defendants more jail time then allowed or normally prescribed.

The Court of Appeal found prosecturoial misconduct on Jones’ part and reversed a defendants drug conviction in the 2006 People v. Woods (Cal App 4th 106). A Justice in the case
said there was a "clear effort" on her part "to obstruct" the accused’s "presentation of a defense."
The opinion says she engaged in "improperly vouching for her witnesses, arguing matters outside of the evidence, imposing a burden of proof or persuasion upon appellant, and denigrating defense counsel," and draws the conclusion that "it is entirely reasonable to conclude that Jones’s misconduct may have played a role in appellant’s conviction." The opinion also says she intimidated a potential defense witness into not testifying.

As a daughter of a LAUSD school Police officer Jones described herself as "pretty law-and-order," She is endorsed by numerous local LA Democratic clubs.

Judge of Superior Court
Office No. 94

C Edward Mack

C Edward Mack has spent his 15 year law career in the Los Angeles Public Defenders offices. He is know for is even temperament. Mack feels the court should be more involved in crime prevention and rehabilitation, especially with youth. He does feel violent criminal do need incarceration . He claims to be patient and treat everybody that comes before him with respects. He says the biggest complaint that people have with the court system is they felt they have not been fully heard. Besides actually giving someone a fair hearing, he plans on giving all parties a hearing in which they felt had their side of the story heard. For his past history, his focus on prevention and rehabilitation where it is applicable I find C Edward Mack the best candidate for this Bench.

His opponent Michael J. O’Gara has spent his entire legal career of 17 years in the District Attorney’s Office. He now has (imho) the honorable a position of prosecuting
complex insurance fraud cases involving companies accused of lowering their workers’ compensation premiums by understating payroll or misclassifying employees. His past does include working on the Jailhouse Informant Litigation Task Force. Both candidate have prior employment before becoming attorneys that would give them both experience in dealing with issues that a civil court would handle.

Office No. 154

Rocky L . Crabb

Rocky L. Crabb has served favorably in the Los Angeles Superior Court as a Commissioner for past three years. Experienced with twenty-five years of private practice, he gained invaluable litigation and trial experience in civil, business, family, criminal, and juvenile law. In his position paper "The Desirable Qualities of a Judge" Crabb talks about goals of the courts should be to provide fairness, respect and dignity to the people who come before it. To strive to provide equal physical and procedural access to the court, so that all may have the opportunity to seek justice.

MICHAEL V. JESIC position paper "What makes a Criminal Gang Prosecutor the perfect candidate for judge?" is a troubling inditement of a District Attorney who will remain a prosecutor if elected judge. The focus of his paper and all of campaign literature is to get criminals off the street. He has shown no signs of fairness in anything that he has said or is said about him. All his writing make him sound like a man who is running for the top prosecutors job in a really bad gang infested area that is over ridden with crime, not for Judge. Jesic has be in the Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office for six years. Of which 6-1/2 years he proudly proclaims has been as Prosecutor in the Hardcore Gang Division.

buckchin you think that who sits on the bench is what midnight ridazz is not

but you someday if not already somebody in this community may be standing in front of one of these judges with unjust charges of the way in which they rode their bicycle.
At that point in time it will be important who is sitting on the bench to decide if the charges are just and should be prosecuted.

Somebody from this community may have been injured by somebody and it may be up
to one of these judges to decide if it is even legitimate that the person who has been damaged deserve the ability to file suite in the effort to become whole.
